GIFT or Miss Vera Christie Digitized by the Internet Archive in 2008 with funding from IVIicrosoft Corporation http://www.archive.org/details/alumnidirectoryoOOyalerich ALUMNI DIRECTORY ALUMNI DIRECTORY OF YALE UNIVERSITY [GRADUATES AND NON-GRADUATES] 1920 NEW HAVEN: ISSUED FOR PRIVATE DISTRIBUTION BY THE UNIVERSITY 1920 OTFT OF /^W S S W^l^ C/? /^J; |"S^ I JL PREFACE Although continuing the series of Yale graduate directories begun in 1872, and follow- ing in general the plan of recent editions, the 1920 Alumni Directory contains several im- portant changes. In 1910 the first list of living non-graduates was compiled and printed, the names being given in one alphabetical list. The second edition (1914) grouped these former students by schools and classes, following the established scheme of the graduate directories. For the greater convenience of those using the lists all living graduates and non-graduates are included in the present volume. In the lists of Yale College, the Sheffield Scientific School, and the Schools of Forestry, Medicine, Law, and Divinity, non-graduate students are listed after the graduates of each class. In the other schools, since there is no class organization, a slightly different arrange- ment has been followed. A detailed Table of Contents has been prepared for the assistance of those consulting the lists. During the past year the Master of Science and higher engineering degrees have been transferred from the Sheffield Scientific School to the Graduate School; recipients of these degrees are therefore listed under the Graduate School. An addition has been made to the locality index which should add apjpreciably to its value. The letters used as a key on the addressograph to indicate the various occupa- tions have been printed in this index so that the number of Yale men in a given occupation in each city and town may be readily ascertained. Since 1916 two changes have been made in the classification by occupations, advertising and forestry having been separated from mercantile and engineering, respectively. Avail- able information regarding men engaged in these occupations has been used in this Directory. Law continues to engage the largest number of graduates, 3,809 following that pro- fession; manufacturing is second with 2,467; finance third with 2,435; while the educa- tion group comprises 2,174 and engineering, 1,913. The statistics show little change in the general distribution of the alumni, as a compari- son of the net totals of 1916 and 1920 on page 625 brings out in a striking manner. The enrollment in each section of the country has increased proportionately with the number of graduates, which shows for four years, on account of the war, about the same change as in the two years from 1914 to 1916. Six hundred and three graduates have addresses in foreign countries, China claiming the largest number (119), followed by Canada (no), Japan (88), England (63), and France (42). The distribution of non-graduates is similar to that of graduates. Of a total of 20,490 living graduates addresses are recorded for all but one and three- tenths per cent. The number of living non-graduates (students who have remained at the University long enough to be included in the annual catalogue) is 7,675; 832 of this number have no addresses in this book. During the years since 1916 there have been an unusual number of changes of location and occupation, due largely to the war. The completeness of this book testifies to the active coSperation between alumni and their organizations and officers, and the Secretary's Office, in its effort to keep the lists as accurate as possible. The facilities of the office are utilized more and more by the alumni with the resultant exchange of information. It is of 885713 6 YALE UNIVERSITY great assistance to receive prompt notification of changes of address or occupation; alumni are urged to keep the Secretary's Office advised regarding themselves and others, in order that the address lists and files may be up-to-date. Miss Marion L. Phillips, Assistant Alumni Registrar, has been responsible for the alumni lists since 1916 and it is to her untiring and efficient efforts that their accuracy and completeness is largely due. The information in this Directory is corrected to June 30, 1920. It is requested that the lists be used only for University and personal purposes, and not as a general mailing list for advertising. Lottie G. Bishop, Alumni Registrar. Secretary's Office, Yale University, September 15, 1920.
