PREFATORY NOTE The present publication contains a General Catalogue of the Alumni and Former Students of Miami University, includ- ing the Members of the Board of Trustees, the Presidents and the Members of the Faculty during the first one hundred years of its corporate existence. The aim has been to publish a brief biographical sketch, not only of each Alumnus regularly graduated, but also of every student enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts, for the reason that some left the institution under pressure of circum- stances and went into active life, doing noble work without a graduate's diploma, and others found it necessary to go elsewhere to finish their college course. It is but just that the names and deeds of such should be preserved in the re- cords of the institution which tend to show how widely the influence of Miami University has extended. It is to be re- gretted that the lapse of years has obscured the history of many of the earlier non-graduate students, of whom it is impossible to record anything more than the name and address as they are found in the Annual Catalogues. However imperfect and incomplete may be the biographical data presented, this gen- eral Catalogue is designed to be complete in giving the name of every student of the College department from the opening of Miami University in 1824 down to the class of 1909 in- clusive. This publication has for its basis the two catalogues com- piled by Mr. Walter L. Tobey, published in 1892 and 1899 in 2319 1 MIAMI UNIVERSITY. respectively, and it is hoped that in some degree it may have approached their excellence. Its compilation has entailed con- siderable labor and research and a very extensive correspond- ence. Care has been taken to obtain accurate information at first hand from the Alumni and Former Students themselves, and where they could not be reached personally, recourse has been had to general catalogues of Theological Seminaries, Annual Ecclesiastical records, Catalogues of the College Fra- ternities and other available sources of information. Where so much detail is involved it is likely that many errors, typographical as well as biographical, will be found to have crept in, but it is hoped that their number will not be disproportionally great. The Editor will very gratefully re- ceive even the slightest amendments of the kind, and will care- fully preserve the same for use in a future edition. Appre- ciating the opportunity of submitting such a Catalogue as this to the Alumni and Former Students, the Editor trusts that it will deepen their interest in each other and strengthen their affection for Alma Mater.
