A hyperreligious child and teenager, I grew up outside of Chicago in a town that was home to a lot of evangelical Protestants, a lot of Catholics, and few others. I was in the first group. We believed that Catholics were going to hell unless they found our brand of true salvation. I was intrigued by Catholics when I was a boy. In vague terms, I understood that they were a part of some- thing enormous, much larger and more ancient and mysteri- ous than my own tradition, and that my own faith somehow derived from the Catholic one. I was taught that Catholics were the same as they had always been, going back centu- ries, and that they should have known better, long ago. Their spiritual practices intrigued me. I remember making fun of the kids on the playground who crossed themselves, mock- ing how they would do it in times of stress or anticipation, muttering short prayers, as I had seen it done by baseball players on television. “What is that all about?” I accused, roll- ing my eyes in as exaggerated a way as I could muster.
