In an ongoing process, the Faculty was very successful in appointing many new colleagues with an excellent international reputation including two very prestigious Heisenberg Professorships, a Helmholtz Young Scientist group, and joint appointments with the Institute for Silicon Technology (ISIT) in Itzehoe and the GKSS Research Center Geesthacht. Among other positive factors, this has h created an atmosphere of departure the results of which are increasingly becoming visible. This has led to a strong increase in the amount of third party funding, the number of publications, and other figures of merit. Equally striking is the huge increase in the number of student enrollment in all disciplines reaching almost 600 in total for 2008. Apparently, the various measures to inspire students for engineering such as engineering courses for high school students in the c laboratories of the Faculty of Engineering, mutual visits between members of schools and of the Faculty of Engineering as well as the „Girls’ Days“ are now showing their effect. The faculty was also, like in the years before, host of the „Jugend Forscht“ competition of Schleswig-Holstein. We are particularly pleased with the impressive increase in the number of female students, which now exceeds 30 % in some courses. These numbers would not have been considered as possible a few years ago in the fieald of engineering. A special highlight in 2008 was the grand opening of the Kiel Nano Laboratory within the framework of the Summer Festival of the Faculty of Engineering. Noble Laureate Peter Grünberg gave the central lecture. The Kiel Nano Laboratory is the central facility of the newly established Focal Point of Support „Nano and Surface Science“ of the Christian-Albrechts University. The Faculty of Engineering n is a key partner and driving force in this focal point. In particular, it has started the initiative for the new Collaborative Research Center SFB 855 on magneto-electric nanocomposites for medical applications which joins colleagues from materials science, electrical engineering, physics, and medicine and received a very promising pre-evaluation from the German Science Foundation (DFG). The faculty is also involved in various other joint activities. Among other cooperations, e.g., with the clusters of excellence „Future Ocean“ and „Inflammations at Interfaces“, it has further strengthened its cooperation with the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. a For details I refer to the respective chapters in this annual report. m Prof. Franz Faupel Dean of the Faculty of Engineering l a SEITE 5 tf(cid:5)(cid:5)(cid:5) 8 0 h c a n a m l a PAGE 6 tf(cid:5)(cid:5)(cid:5) 8 Institute of Computer Science ThedepartmentofcomputerscienceoftheChristian-Albrechts-UniversityofKiel,foundedin1971,belongstotheoldest computersciencedepartmentsinGermany.Currently,itconsistsof15researchgroups.Theirresearchtopics,whichare 0 describedindetailinthesubsequentpages, rangesfromtheoretical, practical, andtechnicalcomputersciencetoapplied computerscienceandappliedmathematics.
