It presents abstracts and progress reports of each project funded under Key Action 1-FOOD, NUTRITION AND HEALTH (Food Allergy) and Key Action 4-ENVIRONMENT AND HEALTH (Allergy and Asthma). Allergy and asthma are two major diseases that negatively impact the quality of life of Europeans. They are the 6th leading cause of chronic diseases and have escalated the health care costs to over 18 billion Euros per year. During the Fifth Research Framework Programme, the European Commission contribution for Allergy and Asthma Research, increased considerably to 45 million Euros. As shown in this catalogue the research projects funded cover a wide range of factors involved in allergies and asthma, from food allergy to cosmetics allergies. The different focus of the projects varies from the hygiene hypothesis, started in Europe in the 80’s and now spread worldwide, to different environmental factors, diet or lifestyle, etc.. The commitment has continued in the Sixth Research Framework Programme. In FP6 we have now funded a Network of Excellence in Allergy and Asthma- GA2LEN comprising 27 partners, including EAACI ( European Academy of Allergology and Clinical Immunology) and EFA ( European Federation of Asthma and Allergy Associations), from 16 countries. This Network is designed to strengthen scientific and technological excellence in allergy and asthma in the European Research Area (ERA). The aim of this European Commission funded research is aim to fight against these diseases, improving at the same time the quality of life of the people in Europe suffering from allergies or asthma. We hope this publication will help to disseminate the results of these projects and will be used by both general and specialist readers. We are particularly grateful to the project co-ordinators and participants who helped us making this catalogue, they are the ones providing the answers.
