Alice T.P. vi 8 ABSTRACT The present study is aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of planned intervention programme on stress, self esteem and adjustment of adolescent wards of clients attending deaddiction centers. Objectives of the study were: 1. To assess the existing levels of stress, self esteem and adjustment of adolescent wards of clients attending de-addiction centers. 2. To find out the effectiveness of planned intervention programme on levels of stress, self esteem and adjustment of adolescent wards of clients attending de-addiction centers. 3. To find out the association of the selected demographic variables with the levels of stress, self esteem and adjustment in the adolescent wards of clients attending de-addiction centers. 4 To find out the relationship between the levels of stress and adjustment and the levels of self esteem and adjustment in the adolescent wards of clients attending de-addiction centers. A quantitative approach with one group pre- test post- test design was used. Nine hypotheses were formulated and tested. The theoretical frame work of the study was based on Sr. Calista Roy’s adaptation model (1984). The dependent variables were stress, self esteem and adjustment among adolescent wards of clients attending de addiction centers. The independent variable was the planned intervention programme. Four measuring instruments were used in this study to evaluate the effectiveness of planned intervention programme among adolescent 9 wards of clients attending deaddiction centers. These instruments included the socio-demographic data developed by the investigator along with three standardized scales, Hari S Stress inventory for Students, to assess the stress of adolescent wards of clients ( Hari S Chandran 2005 ), Rosenberg self esteem scale to assess the level of self esteem among the adolescent wards of clients (Rosenberg 1965) and Indian Adaptation of Bells adjustment inventory (Lalita Sharma 1988) in order to identify the adjustment of adolescent wards of the selected clients. The sample for the study consisted of 300 adolescent wards of clients attending de addiction centers in the district of Thrissur. A random sampling technique was adopted for the selection of the sample. The planned intervention programme was administered with the help of LCD power point presentations and activities arranged in two days with the sequence of stress management, self esteem enhancement, study habits and time management in Malayalam with necessary instructions. A post- test was administered after fifteen days to assess the effectiveness of the planned intervention programme. The collected data were analyzed by computing paired t tests, Chi square, and Pearson’s coefficient of correlation(r). The findings of the study were: 1. Among the selected demographic variables significant association was proved only between the adjustment of the adolescent wards and their age, father’s occupation and their attachment with the mothers. 2. The mean post test scores were significantly higher than the pre- test scores with regard to: (cid:190) Stress, t = 15.09, p<0.05 (299) (cid:190) Self esteem, t = 36.02, p<0.05 (299) 10 (cid:190) Adjustment, t = 24.11, p<0.05 (299) Emotional Adjustment, t = 16.469, p<0.05 (299) Family Adjustment t = 19.429, p<0.05 (299) 3. Highly significant negative correlation recorded between stress and self esteem and stress and adjustment indicated that increasing stress resulted in decrease in self esteem and adjustment .Increase in self esteem was found to and lead to profound increase in adjustment as indicated by the highly significant correlation obtained. ix Summarizing the findings of the present investigation it can be concluded that the applied planned intervention programme was highly effective in reducing stress and enhancing self esteem and adjustment in the adolescent wards of clients. x
