Sequel to Cruising with Destiny Cruising into Destiny: Commitment Ceremony When Steve Wilkinson asks his boyfriend, Nate, of one year for his hand in marriage, he expects smooth sailing on the cruise ship, Destiny. And why shouldn’t he? But if that’s the case, why does Steve feel like he’s swimming against the strongest of tides with no shoreline in sight, instead? All Nate Montgomery wants is a relaxing five-day cruise of the Western Caribbean culminating in a commitment ceremony with the man he loves, which should prove easy being surrounded by the people he loves…Or so he thinks. But for some reason, destiny has taken another course, leaving the couple to maneuver the seemingly turbulent waters without the use of a lifeboat. But when sex, pregnancy, excessive alcohol consumption, affairs, and the revelers from the Friends of Dorothy meeting come crashing together all on one ship, anything is possible, even a wedding…or two? CRUISING INTO DESTINY: COMMITMENT CEREMONY Sequel to Cruising with Destiny ALEX CARRERAS Copyright © 2013 Chapter One “This is incredible,” Nate Montgomery exclaimed, walking into the honeymoon suite on the cruise ship, Destiny. “It’s so much better than that little cabin room I had last year.” Nate scanned the lavish set of rooms, the modern and stylish decor resembling a five-star hotel rather than the typical tropical-kitsch motif preferred by many ocean liners. The unexpected opulence unhinged Nate’s jaw as Steve Montgomery, his partner of one year, blew out a whistle. “Absolutely stunning,” Steve said, still standing at the door. “But aren’t you forgetting something?” What’s that?” Nate asked, squinting against the afternoon sunlight streaming in through the expansive balcony doors. “Look at this view.” “Babe?” “Yeah?” “Nate!” Nate turned, alarmed at the urgency in Steve’s voice. “What’s the matter with you?” “Aren’t you supposed to carry me across the threshold?” Cruising into Destiny: Commitment Ceremony 9 Chuckling, Nate walked toward his lover, the sun illuminating his crystal blue eyes. “I think that only applies after we are married.” He enveloped Steve into his arms, the smell of pine soap and man musk filling his nostrils. “But I’d be glad to christen that mammoth bed if you’re up for it.” Peppering soft kisses along Nate’s shadowed cheek, Steve pressed firmly into Nate’s hold. “I have to admit it’s a very tempting offer, but we have to meet Josh, Brittany, and the others on the lido deck for cocktails in fifteen minutes or so.” Nate pulled back and gazed into Steve’s eyes, waggling his eyebrows. “We can do a lot in that time frame.” “I never want to rush when I’m making love with you,” Steve returned, his lips curved in a sexy smirk. “It would be like chugging a bottle of the finest Cabernet. Completely wasted.” “That is why I asked you to marry me.” Steve stole a quick kiss from Nate’s lips. “You always say the right thing.” “Including answering yes when you asked?” Nate asked, jokingly. “That one above all.” “And what if I didn’t say yes? What would you have done?” “I knew you’d say yes, a rejection was never a possibility. I love you, Nate. I did from the second I saw you at dinner on this very boat, twelve months ago.” “Just like the name of this ship, it was destiny. Our destiny.” They kissed, Steve’s passion searing into Nate, stealing his breath. When Steve had suggested having the commitment ceremony on the ship where they had first became reacquainted since being classmates in high school, Nate had his reservations since it wasn’t legal, hoping for a trip to the District of Columbia instead, where gay marriage is recognized. But now, holding his man firmly in his arms in the serenity of the tranquil suite while the sounds of lapping waves and the seagulls’ cry surrounded him, Steve’s suggestion seemed to be the natural and only choice. They could get married legally another day if they chose to do so. But Nate didn’t need a piece of paper to 10 Alex Carreras prove that he was fully committed, heart and soul, to Steve for the rest of his life, just like the vows state, until death do us part. A tap on the doorframe interrupted their kiss. They turned to see a man standing tall and erect, a bright smile displayed on his café-au- lait-colored lips dressed in a pristinely white uniform. “My name is Diego, your concierge,” he said in a lilting Spanish accent. “If you need anything, anything at all, I will make it happen.” Diego paused and arched a thick, dark eyebrow. “But it appears as if you have everything that you need already.” Steve chuckled as Nate nodded, agreeing. “I do,” Nate said. “We do,” Steve corrected, releasing his hold on Nate and proffering a hand to Diego. They shook, going through the formalities of an introduction. “I have a message from your son, Josh. Your guests are waiting at the bar at the lido deck,” Diego said while doing a quick but still thorough inspection of the suite. “It looks like we’ll have to wait until later to christen the bed,” Steve mumbled under his breath. “I assure you that that bed will have to be retired after this trip.” “I should hope so,” Diego exclaimed with an air of arrogance, spinning on his heels. “It is the Honeymoon Suite after all.” * * * * “Dad, you had a great idea when you wanted to get married on a cruise ship.” Dressed in a pair of tropical print board shorts, orange flip-flops and a tight-fitting Abercrombie T-shirt, Josh threw his arm over his girlfriend Brittany Baker’s shoulders, his wide smile beaming at Steve. “I love Indiana State, but why is it so cold all the time?” Josh visibly shuddered with the memory. “And look at me,” Brittany chimed, frowning. “I am as white as the snow that keeps falling in Indiana. I’m a Florida girl. We’re not supposed to be this pale. I wasn’t this pale when I was born.”
