AlcoholproductionandconsumptionisacontentioustopicintheUnitedStates.
In the debates surrounding alcohol, the cultural context is often lost and over-
shadowedbyafocusonthehealthandsocialissuesassociatedwithalcoholism.
Theseareseriousissuesthatcertainlyrequirefurtherstudyanddebate.However,
in thisencyclopedia we havetried to focuson theoften-marginalized and pop-
cultureaspectsofalcoholuseandmisuse.Entriesilluminatethefavoritealcoholic
beveragesintheUnitedStates,howtheyaremade,howtheyareincorporatedin
everyday life and special events, their role in history, their impacts on society
and health, their role in the arts, and much more. This encyclopedia covers a
broadtimeperiod:primarilyfromtheColonialeratothepresentday.Achronol-
ogyhelpstoputthetopicofalcoholinhistoricalcontext.Thegeographicscopeis
largely limited to the United States, while in some instances going beyond the
boundariesofthiscountrytoconsidertheconnectionsandinfluencesfromout-
side.Thisencyclopediashouldbeseenasastartingpointforfurtherinvestigation.
