technologiesformorethan15years.
Alberto Abad obtained the Telecommunication Engineering degree on 2002
fromTechnicalUniversityofCatalonia(UPC).Between2002and2006hewasa
PhDstudentattheTALPResearchCentreoftheDepartmentofSignalTheory
andCommunicationsoftheUPCandobtainedthePhDdegreeinJune2007. At
UPC,hewasresponsibleforvarioustechnicaltasksinEuropeanandNational
Spanishprojects. HewasalsoalecturerintheTelecommunicationEngineering
SchoolofBarcelonaandcollaboratinglecturerinthedoctorateprogramofthe
DepartmentofSignalTheoryandCommunications.
InFebruary2007,AlbertoAbadjoinedtheSpokenLanguageSystemsLab(L2F)
of INESC-ID as a post-doc researcher and in July 2008 he obtained a “FCT
ProgramaCieˆncia”contractfor5years. Duringthatperiod,AlbertoAbaddevel-
opedresearchonautomaticspeechrecognitionandrobustspeechprocessing;
heledthegroup’seffortsintheareaofspeakerandlanguagecharacterization;
andhepioneeredresearchontheareaofhealth-careapplicationsthatbenefit
from human language technologies, among others. Since then, he has been
PrincipalInvestigatorofFCTfundedprojectVITHEAandINESC-IDrepresen-
tativeintheDIRHAEuropeanproject,BiovisualspeechCMU-Portugalproject,
and TAPAS ITN. He has also been team member in various national and in-
ternationalprojects,andteamleaderininternationaltechnologicalevaluation
challengesachievingexcellentresults. Hehassupervisedandco-supervised
severalthesisandgrantstudentsworkandcollaboratedincoursesofboththe
Computer Science and the Electrical and Computer Engineering degrees of
InstitutoSuperiorTe´cnico(IST)oftheUniversityofLisbon.
InAugust2013,AlbertoAbadwashiredasanInvitedResearcherandProfessor
attheIST,wherewaslecturerofthe“MestradoIntegradoemEngenhariaElec-
trote´cnicaedeComputadores”(MEEC)duringtheacademicyears2013-2014
and2014-2015. InFebruary2015,AlbertoAbadobtainedapositionasAssistant
Professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (DEI) of
theIST.Duringhissabbaticalleavein2018,AlbertoAbadintegratedtheCSTR
LaboratoryoftheUniversityofEdinburghasaResearcherAssociate.
Hiscurrentresearchinterestsincluderobustspeechrecognition,speakerand
languagecharacterization,appliedmachinelearning,health-careapplications,

OneofthehighlightsofAlbertoAbad’scareerduringthelastyearswashis
veryactiveroleinjointinternationalevaluationcampaigns. Thespeechand

languagecampaignsleadbyNIST(NationalInstituteforStandardsand
Technology,USA)aimatestablishingthebaselineofcurrentperformancefor
humanlanguagetechnologiesandgatherthetopresearchgroupsworldwide.
AlbertoAbadledtheparticipationofINESC-IDinthecampaignsdiscriminated
below,havingachievedthetopresultsinmanyofthem. Althoughtherulesof
suchcampaignsdonotallowthepublicationoftherankingresults,this
participationstronglycontributedtoplacingtheINESC-IDteamamongthetop
researchgroupsworldwideinthesefields. Likewise,AlbertoAbadalso
participatedwithgreatsuccessintheAlbayzin’scampaigns,targetingthe
Spanish/Portugueselanguages,andinComParEchallenges. TheComParE
2016-NativeLanguageSub-ChallengewaswonbytheINESC-IDteamledby
AlbertoAbad.
