General Overview Wetlands are lowlands that are covered with shallow water or have saturated soil, for at least part of the year. Wetlands include marshes, swamps, bogs, wet meadows, potholes, sloughs and river over-flow lands. Shallow lakes and ponds, especially if they have emergent plants, are also considered to be wetlands, but streams, reservoirs, and deep lakes generally are not included in the definition.
