F. Linder to honor the occasion of his 70th birthday presents a remarkable collection of interesting and important subjects in the field of surgical oncology. A fitting tribute it is, as Prof. Linder during his professional career has had a keen interest in oncology and has made important contributions to our knowledge in many of the diverse diseases discussed in this volume. But it is not alone the academic and professional career of this remarkable man that this volume salutes. It is the man himself who is honored; the man who has provided the stimulus, the encouragement and the leadership for the professional development of this group of distinguished contrib utors. Professor Dr. med. F. Linder, or "Fritz" as he is affectionately known by surgeons in so many countries, is truly a "surgeon of the world". He is one of those rare individuals who has created such close per sonal friendships around the world that he would be welcomed, and would feel perfectly at home, in departments of surgery in many lands. When visiting in Germany in 1950, I first heard of a brilliant young surgeon by the name of Fritz Linder, an Oberarzt in Professor Bauer's surgical clinic in Heidelberg, and I was pleased to learn a few months later that he had been appointed Direktor der Chirurgischen Universi tatsklinik, Freie Universitat, Berlin. Our lasting friendship began on a chilly, rainy April, 1952 morning at the Lichterfelde railroad station in Berlin and for the next two years we intermittently worked together at the west End Krankenhaus as Professor Linder began the development of a newly organized academic Department of Surgery and the establishment of one of the first cardiac surgery programs in Germany. I remember so well many pleasant mid-day meals at the Linder's home, 8 Oldenburg Allee, with his charming wife Ilsegret and sons Malte and Rupert. A few months after I arrived in Berlin, Professor Linder traveled to Los Angeles to become the first Visiting Professor of Surgery at our new UCLA School of Medicine and thereby established an exchange program between his Department and Los Angeles that con tinued for many years. In 1962, he followed a long line of distinguished surgeons to become the tenth Direktor der Chirurgischen Universitatsklinik, Heidelberg. Under his leadership, the creative work of his Department has been recognized world-wide, and his students and associates have moved on to occupy important positions in German surgery and to develop out standing academic and research programs of their own. It is the prod uct of the academic endeavors in the field of surgical oncology by this next generation of "Linder" surgeons that make up this Fest schrift. Professor Linder has been honored by surgeons in his own land by election to the Presidency of the Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Chirur gie and further honored by being named an Ehrenmitglied of that As sociation. International surgery has recognized his outstanding qual- VI ities by electing him President of the societe Internationale de Chirurgie and of the International Federation of Surgical Colleges. He has also received honorary fellowship in many surgical colleges and societies in other lands.
