Wedetermined that each succeeding year, one or more present or former scientists withtheAgricultural ResearchService couldbe selected, subjectto the following criteria: The selectee made widely recognized impact on agricultural research bythe solutionofa significantagriculturalproblem throughresearch. The selectee is a person whose scientific accomplishments and stature continuetoaffecttheagriculturalresearchcommunityand/orinfluence thedevelopmentofscience-based agricultural policy. Theselectee'scharacterandrecord ofachievementhavebroughtmajor recognition and credibility to ARS and/or USDA, and are worthy of emulationbyyounger agricultural scientists. The selectee's achievements must be or have been nationally and/or internationallyrecognizedbypeers inthescientific community. Today we honor three outstanding scientists by inducting them into A theScienceHallofFame. plaque citing theachievements ofeachwill be added to the permanent exhibit in the George Washington Carver Center, Beltsville, Maryland. Dedrick DeputyAdministrator, Natural Resources and SustainableAgricultural Systems (Retired) National Program Staff Beltsville, Maryland Fornationalandinternationalimpactandleadershipin thedevelopmentand applicationoftechnologyforefficientuseofscarcewaterresourcesworldwide. AllenDedrickwasaleaderinwatermanagementresearch.Hismostnotable achievementswerethedevelopmentofwater-harvestingmethodsandoflevel- basintechnology. Dedrickappliedlaserguidancetogradingandlevelingofirrigatedfields, improvingwaterdistributionovertheentirefield. Laser-guidedgrading hasbeenappliedtotensofmillionsofirrigatedacresandhasexpanded possibilitiesinaridclimates.Level-basinirrigationbecamethestandardin waterefficiency. Hisnextachievementwasdevelopinganoveldrainage — technique alogicalnextstep. Dedrick7simprovementsinirrigatedagricultureledtothedevelopmentof ManagementImprovementPrograms(MIP)fortransferringthetechnology. MIPpulledtogetherawiderangeofinterestedpartiesintoaneffortto improvetheprofitabilityandsustainabilityofirrigatedagriculture. Heledan interagencyMIPofFederal, State, andlocalentities, aswellasanirrigation districtandgrowers,thatidentifiedareas andestablishedplansforimproving performance.TheBureauofReclamationthenadaptedandappliedtheprocess inirrigationdistrictsinthewesternUnitedStates. Dedrick7sachievementsalsohavebeenwidelyadoptedabroad.TheWorld BankusedtheMIPmodeltoimproveirrigationaroundtheworld. DedrickreceivedboththeAwardfortheAdvancementofSurfaceIrrigation andtheEvelynE. RosentreterStandardsAwardfromtheAmericanSociety ofAgriculturalEngineers.HewasvotedManoftheYearbytheIrrigation AssociationandwasinductedintotheHallofFameoftheUniversityof Nebraska,DepartmentofBiologicalSystemsEngineering.Dedrickwasalso honoredwiththePresidentialDistinguishedRankAward.Hehasreceived numerousotherawardsandnationalandinternationalrecognition. 11 2 0 Science Hall of Fame .) Ronald Fayer ResearchZoologist Environmental Microbial and Food SafetyLaboratory Beltsville, Maryland Forscientificleadershipofresearchonparasitesofveterinaryandmedical importanceespeciallyprotistpathogensaffectingfoodanimalsandfoodsafetyandfor leadershipoflaboratoryandagencyprograms thatpromotedthe objectivesoftheAgriculturalResearch Service. RonaldFayerisaworld-renownedexpertonthestudyofmicroorganismsof medicalandveterinaryimportance. Fayer pioneeredin-vitrocultivationofcoccidianparasitesofdomestic animals, andhewasfirsttousethesemethodsfortestinganticoccidialdrugs. Hismethodshavebeenadaptedandusedthroughouttheworldtoinvestigate theseandrelatedorganisms. UntilFayer,thesourceofSarcocystiscystsinhumanandfood-animalmuscles wasunknown.FayerelucidatedthelifecycleofSarcocystis, aparasitic infectionthatcausedmillionsofdollarsofbeeftobecondemnedeveryyear. Heidentifiedpreviouslyunknownprecysticstagesofinfectionthatcaused abortion,wasting,poorgrowth, anddeathinlivestock.Asaresult, Sarcocystis diseaseisnolongeraseriouseconomicproblem. Fayerisalsorecognizedworldwideasaleaderintheidentificationand namingofseveralnewspeciesofCryptosporidium, awidespreadpathogen affectinghumansandanimals.Apreeminentinternationalexpertonprotozoan pathogens,Fayerhasreceivedover350invitationstospeakatscientific conferencesandhasbeeninvitedtomanycountriestoconsultonproblems involvingprotozoanpathogens. HonorsincludetheHelminthologicalSocietyofWashington'sAnniversary Award,DistinguishedVeterinaryParasitologistfromtheAmericanAssociation ofVeterinaryParasitologists,theNationalOceanicandAtmospheric AdministrationUnitAward, andtheH.B.WardMedalfromTheAmerican SocietyofParasitologists.FayerreceivedtheUSDASuperiorServiceAwardin 1978and1997andUSDA'sPlowAwardin2005.Heisalsoarecipientofthe PresidentialRankAwardforDistinguishedSeniorProfessional.
