It essentiallyrepeatswhatwassaidinsection6.6oftheGeneralIntroduction. AsweexplainedintheGeneralIntroduction,section6.1,itwasnotpossible onpracticalgroundstoplacethetranslationbesidetheGreektextoftheedi- tion.WedecidedtoplaceitinVolumeFour,whichhastwoadvantages,(1)that itcanbecollectedtogether,and(2)thatitcanbeconsultedwhilethetextand itsapparatusesarebeingstudied. ThetranslationaimstogiveanaccuratepictureoftheoriginalGreek.Itthus tendstowardstheliteralside,whiletryingtoavoidveeringtowardslanguage thatisartificialorunidiomatic.Itisimportantthatusersofthetranslationnote thefollowingconventionsandpractices: (1)WordsandphrasesthathavetobesuppliedintheGreek,whentranslated, areplacedinparentheses. (2)Name-labelsarerenderedintheusualLatinateformsofthenames.For collectivenames,e.g.schoolsandgroups,weaimatauniformtranslation.A footnote will be added when this is not possible. Note the following transla- tionsofstandardGreekphrases: οἱἀπότινος thesuccessorsofX τιςκαὶοἱἀπ᾽αὐτοῦ Xandhissuccessors οἱπερίτινα Xandhisfollowers. Formultiplename-labelswefollowtheGreekandpreserveallcasesof asun- deta,i.e.notusingcommasandonlytranslatingconjunctionswhenpresentin theoriginal.ThisofcourseisquiteunnaturalinEnglish,buthelpfullyconveys thetelegramstyleofthePlacita. (3)Conjecturaladditionstothetransmittedtext,whentranslated,areplaced inanglebrackets(justlikeinthetextitself).Bracesarealsotakenoverfromthe text,indicatingthatwesuspectthatthetextisnotauthenticoruncertain.An obelus(†)indicatesacruxinthetext,threeasterisksalacuna. (4)Althoughweaimasfaraspossibletoachieveconsistentoneforoneren- derings of Greek terms in English, this is not always possible because of the polyvalentmeaningsofcertainwordsinbothlanguages.Occasionallyweadd anasteriskedfootnotetoexplainaparticularcase. (5) On some occasions it is best to use a transliterated equivalent of the Greek term.
