McCorquodale2 ABSTRACT: Specimensinthreesmallinsectcollectionsdocumentthearrivaloffourspeciesof adventiveladybeetlesinNovaScotia. All fourhaveexperienceddramaticrangeexpansionsin easternNorthAmericainthepast 25 years. Coccinellaseptempunctataarrivedby 1984andby the 1990's was the mostcommoncoccinellid in disturbedhabitats on Cape Breton Island, NS. The morerecentarrivals inNova ScotiaofPropyleaquaiuordecimpunctata (1990),Harmonia axyridis(1995)andHippodamiavariegata(1996)arereported. Several speciesofladybeetleshave becomeestablished inNorthAmerica aftereitheraccidentalorintentional introductionsinthepast25years(Gordon 1985; Gordon and Vandenberg 1991). Populations of some of these intro- duced species have burgeoned to the extent they have the potential to change dramaticallypopulationsofbothnative andotherintroducedladybeetles(e.g. Tedders and Schaefer 1994; Wheeler and Hoebeke 1995). Coccinellids de- serve attention so that we can document which introduced species become established, the speed ofrange expansion and majorchanges in populations. Recently, Hoebeke and Wheeler (1996) recorded the range expansion of adventive lady beetles in the Maritime provinces ofCanada through the sum- merof 1995. HereIprovideupdated informationfromeasternNovaScotiaon three of the four species they reported, Propylea qualuordecimpunciala, Hippodamia variegata and Harmonia axyridis, and information on a species established earlier, Coccinella septempunctata. METHODS All specimens ofCoccinellidae in the small insect collections at the Uni- versity College of Cape Breton, Sydney, Nova Scotia (UCCB), St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, Nova Scotia (STFXU), and the Nova Scotia Department ofNatural Resources, Belmont, Nova Scotia (NSDNR) were ex- amined. IdentificationswerebasedonGordon(1985),GordonandVandenberg (1991), and comparison with specimens in the University ofGuelph Collec- tion, Guelph, Ontario. ENT.NEWS 109(1): 15-20,January&February, 1998 16 ENTOMOLOGICALNEWS RESULTS Coccinella septempunctata L.: Since 1973 this species has spread over most of the continental United States and southern Canada (Gordon and Vandenberg 1991). Schaeferetal. (1987) reported it in NovaScotia in 1985. Collections from mainland Nova Scotia in 1984 and Cape Breton Island in 1985 demonstrate that the species was widespread in the province by 1985. UCCB Tynski, Since 1990, students at the University College ofCape Breton have col- lected 171 specimens in the subfamily Coccinellinae. Collections are largely from disturbed or anthropogenic habitats in the Sydney-Glace Bay area of Cape Breton Island. About half of these specimens are Coccinella septempunctata (86 or50%), while native species are the next fourmost fre- quentlycollected:Adaliabipunctata(24, 14%),C. trifasciata(19,11%),Anatis mail (10, 6%) and Psyllobora vigintiduopunctata (9, 5%). Propyleaquatuordecimpunctata(L):ThisspecieswasestablishedinQue- bec by 1968, had spread to Maine by 1988 and since then to much of the northeasternUnitedStates(Dayetal. 1994). There isastrongprobability that an independent establishment occurred in lower New York State in the mid- late 1980's (Yanega 1996). Hoebeke and Wheeler (1996) provide the first reportforNovaScotiaandrecordcollectionsfromCapeBretonIslandin 1995. Collectionsinthesummerof1996fromCapeBretonandAntigonishCounties indicate that it is now established in eastern Nova Scotia. The Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources collection has 35 speci- mens collected between 1990 and 1995, mostly from Colchester County, but alsofromPictouandHalifaxCounties. TheearliestcollectionsarefromDebert, ColchesterCounty in 1990. Ninemorewerecollected inDebertin 1991. The first collections from Pictou County were in 1994 and in Halifax County in 1995. The first established population was recorded in Louisiana in 1988 (Chapin and Brou 1991). Since then there has been an explosive range expansion and population explosion in northeastern NorthAmerica(seeKiddetal. 1995),withthefirstrecordsforCanadain 1994 (Coderreetal. 1995; Marshall 1995). Thisrangeexpansionhascontinuedinto the Maritimes with Hoebeke andWheeler(1996) reporting it from three sites, including two inNova Scotia(Lunenburg andDigby Counties). By 1992 it was widely distributed from northern New Jersey through New York, Connecticut and Vermont to Quebec (Wheeler 1993). The continuing range expansion to southernNew Brunswick in 1993 andtoPrince EdwardIslandandColchester County,NovaScotiain 1995wasdocumentedbyHoebekeandWheeler(1996). One year later, the spread has continued another few hundred kilometres to Antigonish County and Cape Breton County. Specimens: AntigonishCounty,Antigonish, 10May 1996, B.Jones,STFXU; CapeBretonCounty,Sydney,September 1996,J.Meagher,UCCB The coccinellidfaunaofNovaScotiahaschangeddramatically inthe past 15 years with the addition of four adventive species. The addition of these species is similar to what has occurred over much of northeastern North America(Gordon and Vandenberg 1991). It is interesting to compare the rate of range expansion for the four spe- cies,fromtheirinitial establishmentinNorthAmericauntil they reachedCape Breton Island (Table 1). Cape Breton is at the northeastern limit ofpossible range expansion on continental NorthAmerica. Furtherexpansion requires a majorwatercrossingtoNewfoundland. Linear distance was based on a straight line measurement in "The Interna- tionalAtlas" (McNally 1979). Rapid range expansion, with a minimum of30 km/yearand maximum of more than 400km/year, isclearforall fourspecies. The ratesofrangeexpan- sion give a good picture ofhow quickly these species have colonized North America.Itispossibletheseoverestimate 'real'ratesofrangeexpansion. There havebeenmanyreleasesandattemptstointroducethesespeciesinmanyloca- tions in eastern North America (e.g. Chapin and Brou 1991; Wheeler 1993) andsomereleasesoraccidentalintroductions(e.g.Yanega 1996)closertoNova Scotiathan the firstestablished population, may have been successful. How- ever, the rates are still useful because they emphasize the explosive potential forrange expansion ofintroduced species in NorthAmerica. Beyond impressive rates ofrange expansion, the newly established spe- cieswillhaveaneffectontheexistingassemblageofcoccinellids. Withinfive years ofestablishmentonCape BretonIsland, Coccinellaseptempunctatabe- came the most common species in anthropogenic habitats, as documented by the collections ofUCCB students. Now, there are three more adventive spe- cies in Cape Breton. It remains to be seen whetherone ormore ofthese will displace C. septempunctata as the common coccinellid ofdisturbed habitats. There isalsothe potential fortheseadventive speciestoreducepopulationsof Vol. 109,No. 1,January&February, 1998 19 native species. Wheeler and Hoebeke (1995) have documented dramatic de- clinesinthepopulationsofthenativeC. novemnotataineasternNorthAmerica. Attention should be focused on the influence ofthese new adventives on the commonnativespeciessuchasAdaliabipunctataandC. trifasciatainthenext few years. This note documents useful additions to our knowledge on range expan- sion and establishmentofadventive coccinellids based on specimens in small regional insectcollections. This type ofcollection should play a primary role in documenting population changes ofthese species in the next 15 years. Investigators from the U.S. Food and DrugAdministration(FDA)collectedasurveillancesampletocheckforcomplianceunderthe adulteratedfoodsectionoftheFederalFood,Drug,andCosmeticAct. Theshipmentconsisted of550nylonweavebags,eachcontainingeight- 11 poundclothbags(sewnclosed)ofhulled, whitegrainrice. ExaminationofthericeattheFDADistrictLaboratoryrevealedthepresenceof liveanddeadmaizeweeviladults,SitophiluszeamaisMotschulsky(Curculionidae);sawtoothed grain beetle adults, larvae, and pupae, Oryzaephilussurinamensis (Linnaeus) (Cucujidae); red flourbeetleadultsandpupae, Triboliumcastaneum (Herbst) (Tenebrionidae); and Trogoderma sp.dermestidadultsandlarvae.
