Due to safety concerns as well as other restrictions preventing travelandgatherings,itwasdecidedtoorganizeMoMM2022asavirtualconference. MoMMisoneoftheleadinginternationalconferencesthatbringstogetherawide rangeofcutting-edgeresearchworksfromacrossthecontinents.Thesubmittedpapers areevaluatedbasedontheiroriginality,clarity,relevance,contribution,andimpact.This year,theacceptedpapersarepublishedbySpringerintheirLectureNotesinComputer Science(LNCS)series.LNCSvolumesareindexedintheConferenceProceedingsCita- tionIndex(CPCI),partofClarivateAnalytics’WebofScience;Scopus;EIEngineering Index;GoogleScholar;DBLP;etc. MoMM 2022 attracted 34 papers, from which the Program Committee selected eightregularpapersandeightshortpapers,yieldinganacceptancerateof23%inboth categories.Eachpaperwasreviewedbyatleastthreereviewersandinsomecasesupto four. The dominant research focus of submitted papers was artificial intelligence and machinelearning.Theacceptedpaperspresentadvancesandinnovationsinanarrayof areassuchasonlineteaching,activityandmovementdetection,greenhousegasemission, smartirrigation,networksecurity,andvideodelivery. This year, we had three distinguished keynote speakers, Antonio Liotta from the FreeUniversityofBozen-Bolzano,Italy,JanikaLeostefromTallinnUniversityofTech- nology,Estonia,andRobertWrembelfromPoznanUniversityofTechnology,Poland. WealsohadoursecondWorldABC(ArtificialIntelligenceandBigDataConvergence) Forum with world-renowned speakers, which was hosted by Won Kim from Gachon University,SouthKorea. WewouldliketoexpressoursinceregratitudetotheMoMM2022participants,dedi- catedauthors,ProgramCommitteemembers,thekeynotespeakers,sessionchairs,Orga- nizing and Steering Committee members, and student volunteers for their continuous andgeneroussupportandcommitmentthatmadethiseventasuccess. IoTisamixofsmartanddumb‘things’,adigitalecosystemthatkeeps growinginsizeandcomplexity,generatingavastvarietyofincomplete, unstructureddata.IoTisemergingasoneofthebiggestbig-dataproblems athandbutisunlikeanyotherdatascienceprojects.Itisacomplexspatio- temporalproblem,wherebydatasourcesareheterogeneous,unreliable, unreliablyconnected,andoftenhardtocorrelate.Sohowcanwemake sense of IoT data? How can we avoid turning it into an unpredictable mess? And which hurdles do we need to overcome when it comes to smartsystems? Inthistalk,IexplorethemissedpotentialofCloud-basedsmartsys- tems,wherebythesenseddataistransferredprettymuchun-processedto theCloud.IarguethattomakesignificantinsightsfromIoTdata,weneed toinitiateintelligentprocessesatthemicro-edge(atthesensornodes).By meansofrecentpilotstudies,Iillustratethevalueofshallowlearningand otherlightweightlearningmethods,whichmaybeemployedtoimprove dataqualityandaddresscommunicationandenergybottlenecksintypical smartsystems.Iadvocateanextensiveuseofembeddedmachinelearn- ingtoperformarangeofdataanalysistasksattheveryedgeoftheIoT, employingintelligentprocessesfortaskssuchasdatacleaning,missing- data management, compression, anomaly detection, and forself-tuning the data collection itself.
