The continuing public/scientific interest, growing amounts of animal data, introductionofinnovativetechnologies, andincreasingquantity ofhuman epidemiological studies all suggest that male-mediated developmental toxicity is of majorconcern.AnumberofresearchersconcludedthataSecond InternationalConfer enceonMale MediatedDevelopmentalToxicity wasnecessary. The ensuing volume is particularly timely becauseitimpacts on areas of special emphasis in many countries, withrespect tochildren's andreproductivehealth, aswell astobasic molecularmecha nisms of environmental insult, and genetic susceptibility and predisposition. The Programme and Local Organizing Committee, composed of Barbara Hales (Chair,McGill University),BernardRobaire(McGill University),DanielG.Cyr(INRS/ Armand Frappier),Jacquetta M.Trasler(McGill University),Andrew F.Olshan (Uni versity of North Carolina), Sally Perreault Damey (US EPA), Donald R. Mattison (March of Dimes), and Jan M.Friedman (University of British Columbia),spent over twoyears identifyingindividualswho had made keycontributions inthisfieldover the past decade and planning various aspects of the meeting. The meeting was held in Montreal in June 2001. A total of 132 persons, coming from five continents and representing some 18countries, took an active rolein theproceedings. The conference wasconsideredbyallattendees tobearousing success.Importantdiscussionswereheld in the four break-out sessions, with a preliminary set of recommendations for action being presented by each panel. Wefindthroughout the volume an integrationof informationfrom laboratoryand epidemiological studies, male reproduction, and teratology. Special emphasis on the need for translational research emerged as a common theme of the conference and is highlightedinseveral chapters. There isaneedtodevelop aresearchagenda inthisarea which reflects our current understanding of biological plausibility. Inthis volume, majorcontributions identify new developments and directions in thefieldoverthepastdecade, aswellasthechallengesfortheyears ahead.Therangeof topics include:parental legacies and genomics; lifestyle, occupational and therapeutic paternalexposuresandeffects;effectsonthegamete-packagingofhumansperm;effects onfertilizationandtheembryo; roleofDNA repair andgerm cellapoptosis;stemcells, epigcnetics and cloning; markers of sperm quality and relationship to progeny;model systems;implicationstocliniciansandgenetic counsellors; andimpact onreproductive technology and legislation. Wecould not have had this meeting without the generous support provided by a number of governmental agencies, industry and charitable organizations. A full list of theconference's financial sponsors is provided in the volume.Sid Parkinson provided v excellent administrative support throughout the planning and execution phases of the meeting aswellasvaluable supportineditingthisvolume.Weshouldalsoliketothank Jack Bishopfortakingpicturesduring themeetingand kindlyproviding uswith them.
