Such a comprehensive survey has, however, hith erto been lacking in works on dermatology; this situation I attempt to remedy in the present atlas by presenting a collection of my own cases over the years. I took almost all the photomicrographs myself using a Nikon Biophot microscope. I would like to express my deep gratitude to Prof. Hitoshi Hatano, Department of Dermatology, School of Medicine, Keio University, who reviewed this book and consented to its publication. I am especially grateful to Dr. Junya Fukuda, Chief Pathologist, Kawasaki Municipal Hospital, who helped in diagnosing routine histological sections of the skin and gave invaluable advice with this book. The specific differentia tion of the matrix cells, which is shown m the following figures, IS determmed by the dermal papilla; it is especially influenced by the linear distance of the cells from the base of the papilla [1-3]. Because the hair follicle is somewhat obliquely sectioned, all of the dermal papilla is confined within the hair bulb. FIg. 2. The hair matrix portion. Six kinds ofpilar.keratmocyte are differentiating from the outside to the [> inside of the hair matrix: (I) Henle's layer (He), (2) Huxley's layer (Hu), (3) cuticle of the inner root sheath (CI), (4) cuticle of the hair (CH), (5) hair cortex (Co), and (6) hair medulla (M).
