In this present commercial world, as the service life of components is relatively reduced due to fre- quent changes in the customer demand as well as product design, these innovative technologies have made significant strides for the past few years with immense relevance to design creativity, digital fabrication, and time-compression with varieties of product. As per definition of AM, these processes involve the fabrication of three-dimensional parts through material addition in the form of thin layers. AM technologies are being widely used for the fabrication of functional/non-functional parts with a variety of materials such as polymers, metals, ceramics and thereby combinations. The parts thus fabricated could be used for vari- ous end-user applications such as architecture, construction, industrial design, automotive, aerospace, military, engineering, dental and medical industries, biotech (human tissue replacement), fashion, footwear, jewel- lery, eyewear, education, geographic information systems, food and many other fields. This book highlights the latest innovations in the area of AM along with basic fundamentals, mathematical modelling, suitable numeri- cal problems and future scope/directions, especially for undergraduate and postgraduate students. In spite of the best of our efforts, there are bound to be some mis- takes. The same may kindly be brought to our notice for rectification. We sincerely hope that Additive Manufacturing: Applications and Innovations, which is of the Manufacturing Design and Technology Series meets the expectations of readers on this vital subject of production technology. vii Editors Rupinder Singh received his PhD degree in mechanical engineering in 2006 from Thapar  Institute of Engineering and Technology, Patiala (India), the MTech degree in production engineering in 2001, and the BTech production engineering degree in 1999 from the Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar (India). He is a chartered engineer with the Institution of Engineers (India). Currently, he is Professor of the Department of Production Engineering at the Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College, Ludhiana (India). He has more than 17 years of teach- ing and research experience in manufacturing and production engineer- ing with special emphasis in additive manufacturing. Dr. Singh’s interests are rapid casting, nontraditional machining and maintenance engineer- ing. He has guided large numbers of PhD and masters students as well as coordinated and participated in 18 research projects. Dr. Singh has received several scientific and research awards. He is the editor-in-chief of 2 international journals, guest editor of 4 journals, book editor and scien- tific advisor to 2 international journals. Presently, he is an editorial board member of 5 international journals and acts as reviewer for more than 10 prestigious Web of Science journals. In addition, Dr. Singh authored more than 20 books, 50 book chapters and 424 articles in journals and confer- ences (h-index 27+/2700+ citations). ix
