2 WOODS ADDITIONS TO THE FLORA OF NAGS HEAD NORTH (DARE COUNTY, CAROLINA) AND THE OUTER BANKS OF NORTH CAROLINA Alexander Krings North Carolina State University Raieigh.NC 27695-761 [email protected] The Nags Head Woods Dare Co comprises Ecological Pi esci ve (Kill Devil Hills ) one of the best remaining examples mid-Atlantic mai itime deciduous forest ot & (Schafale Weakley 1990) and includes an extensive system of dunes, interdunal ponds, and wetlands. Recent progress toward a flora of the preserve provided a checklist of vouchered collections housed at the herbarium of the National Park Service Cape Hatteras National Seashore Unit (CAHA), Manteo, North Carolina (Krings 2002). Although not listed in either the Index CAHA Herhariorum (Holmgren et al. 1990) or Aulbach-Smith et al. (1986), con- The North stitutes a valuable resource of Carolina barrier island collections. (NHWEP) Woods from Nags Head housed collections the Ecological Preserve CAHA members Dunes include material collected by various of the of Dare at Garden Club, McCaffrey, as well as Stalter and Lamont (1997). This study pre- sents new additions to the flora of the preserve and the larger Outer Banks (sensu & Lamont from by author and Stalter 1997), resulting recent collections the preserve staff. METHODS The was compiled based on collections by the author and preserve list field . RESULTS NHWEP new below Species at the listed include additions to the flora, as well as species previously reported but not vouchered by Blonder and Stalter (1992) and Lamont name or Stalter (1997). Asterisks preceding a scientific indicate that NHWEP new taxon to be a addition to the flora of not previously reported (i.e., by Blonder and Stalter (1992) or not specifically reported the preserve by for and Lamont Stalter (1997)). The includes 89 34 (38%) which have not been previously species, of list reported for the preserve, and 5 (-6%) of which have not been reported for the Outer Banks not Burk Blonder and listed in either (1961), Stalter (1992), or (i.e., and Lamont Stalter (1997)).
