Recognition for the impor- tance of performing regular physical activity for good health took a major leap forward with the release of the first-ever federal policy report, Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, released in October 2008 by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Ser- vices (www.health.gov/PAguidelines/). Clinicians, public health professionals, and al- lied health professionals will now, more than ever, need the expertise of those trained and knowledgeable in prescribing physical activity/exercise and measuring the effects of these programs. As stated in Chapter 1 of this manual, physical fitness is the measura- ble outcome of a person’s physical activity and exercise habits. Thus, it is essential that exercise professionals remain well versed in the methods of health-related physical fit- ness assessment and the interpretation of the results of these assessments. This third edition of the ACSM’s Health-Related Physical Fitness Assessment Manual updates the material from the previous editions and offers a significant amount of new material. The intent of this manual remains to provide a comprehensive overview of why and how to perform assessments of the five health-related components of physical fitness: body composition, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and car- diorespiratory fitness. This manual is an extension of assessment principles covered in the ACSM’s Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription (8th edition) and includes many of the summary tables and figures from these Guidelines. Readers familiar with the previous editions of this manual will notice the following new or significantly revised features in this third edition: • New introductory material in Chapter 1 providing more background on issues re- lated to health-related physical fitness. • Reorganized and expanded information in Chapters 2 and 3 on preassessment screening and assessment of risk factors. These chapters include new material on blood sampling methods, assessment of physical activity, and assessment of risk of other chronic diseases, including pulmonary disease and osteoporosis. • Reorganized material in Chapters 4–8 on the assessments of each of the components of health-related physical fitness. These chapters provide the background on the ra- tionale for this assessment and the hierarchy of methods, with emphasis on the errors involved in prediction from lower-ordered methods. An overview of the major limi- tations of some assessment methods and a discussion of other unique assessment principles are provided. • Step-by-step instructions for assessment of health-related physical fitness and re- sources for interpretation of test results. The manual provides more than 110 boxes, tables, and figures to help the reader understand the concepts of health-related phys- ical fitness. There are a number of figures that demonstrate incorrect versus correct procedures of specific assessments. • Case study analysis at the conclusion of each assessment chapter and suggested lab- oratories to help students master the concepts of health-related physical fitness. v LWBK311-4182G-FM_i-xiv.qxd 19/03/2009 08:29 AM Page vi Aptara LWBK311-4182G-FM_i-xiv.qxd 19/03/2009 08:29 AM Page vii Aptara > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Acknowledgments When writing acknowledgments, one always runs the risk of omitting the mention of someone who has contributed. I am truly appreciative to all who provided support and assistance to the development of the third edition of this manual. With that being said, I do want to specifically acknowledge and thank the following individuals and groups. Thanks to Dr. Greg Dwyer, who, through his teaching of fitness assessment to un- dergraduate Exercise Science students, recognized the need for a comprehensive man- ual of health-related physical fitness assessment. Greg, along with his coeditor, Dr. Shala Davis, produced the first two editions of this manual. All of us who teach, and the stu- dents who learn health-related physical fitness assessment, are indebted to you and Shala. I appreciate all of the members of the American College of Sports Medicine who vol- unteer their time to our professional organization. I especially extend my gratitude to Dr. Jeff Pottinger and Dr. Jeff Roitman for asking me to serve as the editor of this third edition. I also wish to recognize Dr. Madeline Paternostro-Bayles and the team of re- viewers for their timely work and contributions. Finally, thanks to the editorial groups of the eighth edition of ACSM’s Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription and the sixth edition of the Resource Manual for the ACSM Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Pre- scriptionfor their cooperation throughout this project. My gratitude to the professional staff of the American College of Sports Medicine who played an important role in this third edition, particularly Dr. Mark Robertson for the countless hours he served in the development of publications for this organization. I also want to recognize Kerry O’Rourke and Lori Tish for their support in the comple- tion of this manual. Thanks to the talented and hard-working staff at Lippincott Williams & Wilkins whom I have worked with now on three separate ACSM publications. I particularly want to extend my gratitude to Andrea Klingler and Matt Hauber for their assistance throughout this project. Thanks to my professional colleagues who provided materials that contributed to this third edition: Dr. Tony Kaleth, Dr. Mark Kasper, Dr. Paul Nagelkirk, Mr. Jim Ross, Dr. Pat Schneider, Dr. Scott Strath, and Dr. Todd Trappe. I also extend my appreciation to my colleagues at Ball State University’s Human Performance Laboratory, especially Lynn Clark, and to our graduate students for all of their support. And finally, thank you to my wife, Mary, and my daughters, Lauren and Bonnie, for their continuing love and support. I also thank them for their behind-the-scenes assis- tance in support of the production of this manual. vii LWBK311-4182G-FM_i-xiv.qxd 19/03/2009 08:29 AM Page viii Aptara
