ACADEMIC REGULATIONS AND INFORMATION RESPONSIBILITY Responsibilityandauthorityforadmitting,continuing,promoting,and graduatingstudents isvested inthePresident, Provost,and FacultyCouncil. NewEnglandConservatoryofMusicreserves therighttorefuse,suspend,or cancel the registrationofanystudentwhoseacceptanceorcontinuedattendance isconsidereddetrimental tothe best interestsofthestudentortheCollege. Studentsareresponsibleforunderstanding theCatalog, theirdegreeprogram, andcurrentacademic regulations. TheConservatoryreviewsand revises its regulationsannually; revisions becomeeffectiveuponpublicationoftheCatalog. Graduation requirementsaredetermined bydegreeprogramsdescribed inthe yearstudentsentertheConservatory. NECcomplieswith theStudent Right toKnowand CrimeAwarenessand Campus SecurityActs. PROGRAMS OF STUDY NewEnglandConservatoryawards BachelorofMusic, MasterofMusic,and DoctorofMusicalArtsdegrees,aswellasUndergraduate,Graduate, andArtist diplomas. ADVISING TheUndergraduateandGraduateAcademicAdvisorsprovideacademiccounsel- ing forstudentsenrolled intheUndergraduateDiploma, BachelorofMusic, MasterofMusic,andGraduateDiplomaprograms. They helpstudentsselect courses, meeteducational and careergoals, remedyacademicdifficulties, and betterunderstandNEC'spurposesandpolicies. TheAssociate Provostprovides curricularadvising forstudents in thedoctoralprogram. Studio instructorsanddepartmentchairsserveas informal academicandcareer advisors. PeerAdvisorLeaders(PALs), selectedbyfacultyandadministrators, helpenteringundergraduatesand international students learnaboutNEC. In addition, theCareerServicesOfficeprovides resourcesforexploringcareeroppor- tunities toallNECstudentsand alumni. RESIDENCY POLICY Full-TimeStatus NewEngland Conservatory requires students toregisterfull time. Baccalaureate studentsmustenrollforeightfull-timesemesterstoqualifyforthedegree;Under- graduateDiplomastudents,forsix. MasterofMusicandGraduateDiplomastu- dentsmustenrollforfourfull-timesemesters. Doctoralstudentsmust beenrolled fiill-timeforthefirst twosemesters. Students maynotaccelerate requirements 2 Academic Regulations and Information tocompleteprograms infewerthan therequired numberoffull-timesemesters (exceptionsaremadefortransferstudents). Master'sstudents mustcomplete requirementswithin fiveyearsofmatriculation. Doctoral studentsmustcomplete requirementswithinsevenyearsofmatriculation. Part-TimeStatus Conservatorystudentswhoneed topursuepart-timestudymustpetitionthe DeanofStudentsforpermission todoso. Doctoralcandidates maystudypart timeaftertheirfirstyear,withapprovalfromtheAssociate Provost. CREDIT LOADS AND ENROLLMENT STATUS The numberofcreditsdeterminesenrollmentstatus,which theConservatory definesasfull-time,part-time, half-time,orless thanhalf-time. Studentswith permission toregisterforless thanfull-timeloadsarebilledonaper-creditbasis (see TuitionandFees). Definitionsdifferforeachdegree/diplomaprogram: Full-time Part-time Half-time Diploma 10-13 fewerthan 10 atleast 5 BachelorofMusic 12-16 fewerthan 1 at least 6 GraduateDiploma 6-8 fewerthan6 atleast 3 MasterofMusic 8-10 fewerthan8 atleast4 DoctorofMusicalArts 8-10 fewerthan 8 atleast4 AllArtistDiplomastudentsarefull-time; theircourse load isfourcredits. They may takeadditional creditsonlywithapprovaloftheArtist DiplomaCommittee. Sincechanges inenrollmentstatusaffect financialaid, students requesting permissiontobepart-timeshouldconsult theFinancialAidOffice. REGISTRATION RegistrationatNewEnglandConservatoryofMusic isanagreementbetween the studentandNEC toacceptall rulesand regulationssetforth by theinstitution. Registrationcertifiesenrollment inclasses, ensembles,andstudios; italsocontin- ueslong-termadvisingaboutprogramsandcareers. Newstudentsmustprovide theRegistrar'sOfficewithproofofqualifyingdegrees toregister. Anofficial transcriptconstitutessuchproof. NewstudentsregisterduringOrientation inFallandSpring; continuingstu- dents registerbeginning inOctoberandMarch(seeAcademicCalendarforspecific dates). Students receiveregistrationpriority byclassyear,except thoseenrolled in theNEC/Tuftsprogram,whomayregisteratanytime. Toregister, studentsmeetwith theiracademicadvisor. Students registerfor alldegreerequirements,asoutlined intheirProgramofStudy. Thosewishing to enroll incourses requiringauditionorconsentmustobtaininstructor'swritten permission todoso. Academic Regulations and Information Studentswhomisstheirscheduledregistrationappointmentarecharged theLateRegistrationFee(currently$100)andarerequiredtowaituntil afterthenormalregistrationperiodhasendedtoregisterforcourses. LateRegistration Lateregistrationoccursfollowing registrationforthosestudentswhomissed aregistrationappointmentduring theregistrationperiod; forallothers, late registrationoccursduring the firstweekofeachsemester'sclasses. There isafee (currently $100). Studentsreturning toactivestatusmayregisterduring the registrationperiodorin the firstweekofclassesat nocharge. AddingorDroppingClassesduringTerm Studentsmayaddordropclassesduring theAdd/Dropperiod (seeAcademic Calendar)withapprovaloftheiracademicadvisor;addingordroppingstudio, ensemble, orchambermusicrequireswrittenpermissionfrom theappropriate department. Droppedcoursesdo notappearontranscripts. NEC/Tuftsstudents maydropcoursesatNEC uptosixclassdaysafterclasses beginatTufts. Thosewishing toadd coursesatNECmustdosoeitherafter registrationatTufts(seedouble-degreepolicystatement)orwithinNEC's Add/Dropperiod. Withdrawingfrom ClassesduringTerm Afterthe Add/Dropperiod ends, students maywithdraw from classes bycon- sulting withtheiracademicadvisorand completing theappropriatepaperwork. Students whosimply stop attending acourse and do not complete the appro- priatepaperworkwill have thegradeofFrecorded forthecourse inquestion. Students may notwithdrawfrompromotionals, recitals, ensembles, studios,or chambermusic,except bydepartmentconsentandwithapproval oftheacademic advisorand DeanofStudents. Noonemaywithdrawfrom coursesduring the W final twoweeksofclasses. Withdrawalsare notated as on transcripts. ATTENDANCE NECexpects newstudents toarrive by the firstdayoforientation;continuing students, bythe firstdayofclasses. Studentsarrivingafterthe lastdayof Add/Dropand late registrationwill not beallowed toregister. Studentsare responsibleforunderstandingcourse, studio, andensembleatten- dancepolicies. TheConservatorywillgrantofficialexcuses fordocumentedjury dutyand religious holidays. Massachusettsstate lawprovidesthat: Anystudent ... whoisunable, becauseofreligious beliefs, toattend classesortoparticipate inanyexamination, study,orworkrequirement onaparticulardayshall beexcused ...,and shall beprovidedwithan opportunity tomakeupsuchexamination, study,orworkrequirement whichhemayhavemissed becauseofsuchabsenceonanyparticularday; . Academic Regulations and Information provided, however, thatsuch makeupexaminationorworkshall notcreate anunreasonableburden uponsuchschool. Nofeesofanykindshall be charged by theinstitution ... Noadverseorprejudicialeffects shall result toanystudent. .. Students mustrequest theexcusedabsenceforjurydutyorreligiousreasonsfrom theDean'sOffice inadvance. Theyareresponsiblefornotifying theirteachers aheadoftimeandmakingappropriatearrangementsformakingupmissedwork. Forallotherabsences, studentsmustpetitiontheirinstructors tobeexcused. TheDeanofStudentsmayprovidealetterofsupport toteachersonbehalfofthe student. Studentsseekingaletterofsupportshouldsubmitawritten, signed request totheDean,specifying thereason(s)fortheabsence, theteachers to whom theletterofsupportshouldbesent, and thespecificdatesofabsence. In addition,students must includeappropriatedocumentationtoverifytheabsence (medical records, forexample, in thecaseofamedicalabsence). STUDENT CLASSIFICATIONS Enrolled: Astudentwhohasbeenadmitted to,haspaidthe tuitiondepositfor, and has registered inaprogram isenrolled. Active:Astudentwhoisenrolled in, registered for, andattending scheduled activities isactive. Inactive:Astudentwhodoes not registerforoneormoresemesters, butwho intends toreturn toNEC, isinactive. LeaveofAbsence: Astudentwhodiscontinuesactiveenrollmentduringand foronlypartofasemesteris,withpermissionoftheDeanofStudents,onaleave ofabsence. Withdraw^n:Astudentwhohas not registeredat,anddoes not intend toreturn to, NEC iswithdrawn. Suspended: Astudentwhois notallowed tocontinueatNEC foracademicor disciplinaryreasons issuspended. Dismissed: Astudentwhoseenrollment ispermanentlycancelled isdismissed. Students maintainactivestatus byregistering forthe nextsemester. Thosefailing toregisterduring regularregistrationendangertheireligibilityfor financialaid andwill be institutionallyplacedon inactivestatusat theendofthatsemester. LEAVING ACTIVE STATUS Forstudents leaving school betweensemesters, whethertogoinactiveortowith- draw, theeffectivedateofthestatuschangewill be the lastdayofthesemester completed. Forastudentleavingschoolduring thesemester, theeffectivedateis theday thestudentsubmits thepetition totheDeanofStudents. Forstudents whowithdrawfromschool butdo not notify the Dean'sOffice, theeffectivedate will be thelastdocumenteddateofattendanceatNEC.
