RyukyuIslands,SouthwestJapan.ltissomewhatsimilaringeneralappearancetoM aka
(KON0,1928)andM o/1s″t川ana(NAKANE, I957),butcanbeclearlydiscriminated from
theformerbyhavingtheblackishbrownbodyandtheshorter4thsegmento、fantenna,and
fromthelatterbyhavingthehindtibialspursalmostthesameinlengthandthefiatellipti-
calterminalsegmentofthemaxillarypalpusinmale.
Introduction
Thegenus Morde11istenoda ERMIscHcomprisesabout ten knownspeciesat the
presentmoment,andisknownfromJapan,Taiwan,southernChina,theMalayPenin-
sula,BorneoIsland,NewGuineaandnorthernAustralia.Thisgenuswaserectedby
ERMISCH (1941) for asinglespecies, M fukiensisERM1scH, 1941, fromsouthern
China. Itpossessesaflatelliptical terminalsegmentofthemaxillarypalpusinmale
and thehindtibialspursalmost thesameinlength.After that,ERMlscH(1963)do_
scribedanotherspeciesofthegenusfromnorthernAustraliabyexpandingthegeneric
concept.BATTEN(1990)alsodescribedtwonewspecies fromNewGuinea following
ERMISCHs' (l963)conceptofthegenus.Astheresultofthesestudies,itbecameappar_
entthatcertainspeciesplacedinthegenusdidnotpossesstwomaincharactersnoted
above.SHIYAKE(1997)described fournewspeciesofthegenusfromSoutheastAsia,
andrearrangedthegenericconcept, thoughtherestill remainedmanyproblemstobe
solved.
InJapan,KONo(1928)describedanewspecies,Molde11istenaaka,andNAKANE
(1957a)describedanewspecies,Glipostenodaohsumlana.Later,thesetwospecies
weretransferredto thegenusMorde111stenoda, the formerbyNAKANE(1957b),and
thelatterbyNOMuRA(1963).Thus,twospecieshavehithertobeenknownasmembers
ofthegenusMo,de11istenoda.
Inthispaper, IamgoingtodescribeanewspeciesofthegenusMo,・de11istenoda
fromtheRyukyuIslands,andusethe8thabdominalsterniteoffemaleasanimportant
morphologicalfeaturetorecognizethespecies.

MaterialsandMethods
Thematerialsusedinthisstudywerecollectedbymyselfandsomeother ento-
mologists from2003to2004.Almostall theexternalbodypartsoftaxonomicalim-
portance(antennae,maxillarypalpi, foreandhindlegs,8thabdominalsternite,and
parameres)weremountedonasmallpieceofglass(lox5mm)withdropsofCanada
balsamdissolvedby2-Ethoxyethano1,andwereobservedwithbinocular lightmicro-
scope(OlympusCH2;upto400x).Afterobservation,thispieceofglasswasgluedon
asmallpieceofpaperboard,andpinnedunderthespecimensfromwhichthenecessary
partswereremoved.Measurementsoflengthsofhead,pronotumandelytraweretaken
bythefollowingmethods(Fig.1):headlengthwasmeasuredfromtheleve1ofbasa1
margintothetopof fronsinprofile;pronota1andelytrallengthsweremeasuredfrom
topsofpronotumtotheapicesofelytrainprofile.Additionally,bodylengthwasmea-
suredasatota1ofpronota1andelytra11engths.

Remarks. Thisspecies was regardedby HATAYAMA (1985) as amember of
Morde11iste,1oda.However,itclearlydiffersfrom itsgenericconceptinthecharacters

spursandtheleftparamere.Therefore,itstruesystematicpositionshouldberevisedin
futurewhena full investigationofthegroupismade.

Male. Bodyalmostblackishbrown;mouthparts, forecoxaeandtibiae,middle
tibiae, foreandmiddletarsi,andhindtibialspursyellowishbrown;antennae,middle
femora,hind tibiaeandtarsi,andapicalpartsofpygidiumandhypopygiumbrown;
elytraandscutellumusuallyblackishblown,butthesometimesbrown.Hairsonalmost
wholebodyshinyyellow.
Headstrongly convex, abouttwiceaswideaslong; eyessomewhat large, nearly
circular,notemarginatein front,sparselyhaired; temperaverynarrow,alittlewider
than the diameter of a facet. Antennamoderately long, about 2.4 timesas long as

verginganteriorlyindorsalview;anterioranglesbroadlyroundedateachtip,posterior
onessomewhatroundedateachtip.Scutellumtriangular,widerthanlong,withapex
rounded.Elytraabout2.1timesaslongashumeralwidth,about4timesaston9as
pronotum,taperedposteriorlyandbroadlyroundedateachapex.Apicalmarginofhy-
popygiumacutewithoutemargination.Pygidiumstraightandrelativelyshort,about
0.4timesaslongaselytron.Legsslender(Fig 2D-F); foretrochanterwithablackish
setainapicalareaofinnermargin, forefemurwithablackishsetaatmiddleofinner
margin;eachpenultimatesegmentof foreandmiddletarsidilatedtotheapex,emar-
ginateatapicalmargin,andsurmountingterminalsegment.Hindlegwithlongand
obliquecombsformulatedas3,2,1-2,1-2;tibiawithtwobasalcombsnearlyreaching
medja1axis, with apical onetheshortest; 1stsegment of tarsuswith twooblique
combs,2ndsegmentwithtwoobliquecombsthoughthebasaloneissometimesab-
sent,3rdwithtwoobliquecombsbutbasaloneisvestigialoroftenabsent,4thseg-
mentwithoutcomb.Innerspurofhindtibiaabout0.7timesaslongas1stsegmentof
hindtarsus,outeroneverylong,slightlyshorterthaninnerone.
Eighthabdominalsterniteabout12timesaslongaswide(Fig 2G);apical lobe
protrudentandroundedatapex,denselyshort-hairedincentralarea,sparselylong-
hairedonitsmargins.
parameresasillustrated(Fig 2H);leftparemerewithnormallythickmainlobe,
basalprocessheavilysclerotize branchingat themiddlepartofmainlobe,ventral
branchslightlyincurve apparentlynotreachingthetopofmainlobe;rightparamere
withnormally thickmain lobe, roundedat apex, ventral branch long and narrow,
clearlynotreachingthetopofmainlobe.
Female. Similartomaleingeneralappearance,butdifferent fromitmainlyin
thefollowingrespects:1)antennaabout2.7timesaslongaslengthofhead(Fig 2B),
2)eyessomewhatsmallerthaninmale,3)terminalsegmentofmaxillarypalpuselon-
gatedsecuriform(Fig 2C),4) foretrochanterand femur withoutblackishhairs,5)
eighthabdominalsterniteisprovidedwithverylongbasal lobewhichisdivaricateat
theapex(Fig 3C),about5.1timesaslongaswide,aciculateatapex,denselyshort-
hairedinapicalhalf,andwithverylonghairsonapicalmargin.

differs fromthemmainlyinthecharacterstatesgiveninthekey,andalsointhefol-
lowingpoint:eighthabdominalsterniteoffemalewithaverylonganddivaricatebasal
lobe, whereasit is veryshort andsectorial inM akaandsimpleinMohsumiana. I
havetentativelyregardedthisnewspeciesasamemberofMet・de11istenodaERMlscHin
viewofpeculiaritiesofthemaxillarypalpusandthehindtibialspurs.However,itob-
viouslydiffersfromthatgenusinthe4thantennalsegmentandtheleftparamere.Itis
thereforenecessarytoreviseitssystematicpositionbyfutureinvestigations.
Etymology. Thespecificnameofthisnewspecies,“donan”,isanaliasnameof
Yonaguni Island, thetypelocality. In formertimes,Yonaguniwascalled“donan”,be-
causeitwasnoteasytoreachthat island.“Do(to)'meansvoyage,and“nan” means
difficulty.
Noteon habitat. Almostallthespecimensexaminedinthisstudywerecollected
bysweepingthefloorofevergreen forests.Itisinferredthatthisnewspeciesinhabits
such forest floors.

鶴 智之:f1,i球列島から得られたァカヒメハナノミ属の分類学的研究, および1新種の記
載. - J?球列島の与那国島と石垣島から得られたァカヒメハナノミ属Mo,de/1iste,,odaのl新
種を, M donanと命名して記載した. 本極は体色が黒 色であることや, 角?角第4節が5節よ
り短くなるなどの点でMaka(KONo,1928)から明瞭に区別される. またM. o1/sumlana(NAKANE,
1957)とは, 2本の後月節v端期iが1ほぼ同長となる点や小 ・^肢の末端節が長楕円形となる点など
明瞭に区別できる. しかしながら, 本種は角jl角第4節が3節と同長となることや, 雄交尾器の
側片の形状がこの属の形質と異なっているため, 本種の所属に関して今後の再検討が必要であ
ろうと考えられる. なお, 以上の3種を区別する形質として, ハナノミ科において初めて検討
された tの第8腹板を用いた.
