He characterizedthissubgenusnotonlyhavingthreelateralspinesofthepronotumbutalso havinghair-fringesunder themaleantennae. HAYAsHI (1976, 1980) proposed to enlargethissubgenusbyincludingseveralspecieswhichhavedistinct threespineson eachsideofpronotumbutnothavinghair-fringesofantennae. HetransferredMegopis (Aegosoma) tibialisWHITE to thesubgenusSpinimegopisanddescribed threemore species,M.lanhsuensls,M malasiacaandM riepalensis, underthissubgenus. However, hedidnotexaminetherestoftheknownspeciesinthegenusMegopiswhethersomeof themshouldbe transferred to thissubgenusor not. In thispaper, wearegoing to succeed these works. Beforethissubgenuswasproposedby K. 0HBAYAsHI (1963), thephylogenetic importanceofpronota1spineshadgenerallybeenoverlookedbypreviousworkers. Only exceptionwasmadebyGREssITT(l940)whenheincludedthischaracter inaseriesof differences between thesubgeneraAego11pton and Baralipton (see KoMIYA, 2005). Concerning the Aegosoma group, in which the most species to be transferred to Spinimegopishadbeenplaced, thischaracterwasindicatedonseveralspeciesbyGAHAN (1906) but he did not suggest any moremeaning of this character state. After examination of a longseriesof specimenswhich havespines on the pronotum, we concludedthatthischaracterclearlydividesAegosomasensuLAMEERE(1909) intotwo parts,viz.,AegosomaandSpinimeg〔)pls.
