More and more stu d en ts are spending time in various phases of the sp o rts program . The secondary schools are now o ffe rin g to the stu d en ts more a c tiv itie s of an in d iv id u a l n atu re. A lthough em phasis s t i l l tends to favor sp o rts of a team n a tu re , more e ffo rt is being made today to recognize the in te re s ts and needs of each in d iv id u a l. This sy lla b u s, on the fundam entals of gym nastics, which is p resen ted h ere, is designed to meet the needs of the in d iv id u al stu d en t. Most group sp o rts and a c tiv itie s m iss th e arm s, sh o u ld ers, c h e st, and back m uscles. No s u b s titu te has been found fo r ap paratus and tum bling a c tiv itie s to accom plish th is o b je c tiv e . P ic tu re s have been included along w ith each tric k to give you an under­ standing of the a c tu a l tric k and to c la r if y the d ire c tio n s given on how the tric k is perform ed. The in te n t of th is sy llab u s is to supply those teach ers and stu d en ts who are in te re s te d in gym nastics a s ta rtin g p o in t from which to work. The tric k s are lis te d in order of d if f ic u lty , but teach in g methods and procedures have been le f t o u t. I t Is not a course of study but should vii be used to a id the learn in g and understanding of the u s e r. The gym nastic c la ss of H untington Park High School in Los A ngeles, were asked to l i s t the b a sic problem s in perform ing tric k s re la te d to beginning gym nastics. These problem s were c la s s ifie d by the au thor and arranged in to a ta b le of contents* The same stu d en ts were then asked to answer th ese problem s and the answ ers appear in the d ire c tio n se c tio n of the sy lla b u s. The perform ance and ev alu atio n sectio n s were suggested by the same source. v l i i PREFACE TO GYMNAST This sy llab u s is designed to give you the b a sic fund­ am entals of elem entary gym nastic movements. The m a te ria ls are arranged to help you m aster the techniques of apparatus and tum bling a c tiv itie s . You too can be ,a gymnast* Use th is sy llab u s in the learn in g of apparatus and tum bling a c tiv itie s . The use of th is sy llab u s is not a guarantee th a t you can become a g re a t gym nast, b u t w ith hard work and d eterm in atio n you can enjoy working in gym nastics. P ractic e is always the b e st teach er. ?/ork hard on these a c tiv itie s and you can g ain m astery of beginning gym nastics. I t is hoped th a t th is inform ation w ill help you to le a rn some of the fundam ental movements of gym nastics.
