Odonatologica21(3):275-288 September I.1992 A study of familyPolythoridae, with details on the genusEuthoreSelys, 1869 (Zygoptera) G.H. Bick¹ and J.C.Bick¹ 1928 SW48Avenue, Gainesville, Florida 32608, United States Received November 19, 1991 /Revised andAcceptedMarch 2, 1992 The 8 spp. ofEuthore arekeyed, discussed andtheir wingcolor patterns figured and tabulated,E. fasciata (Hag.) is polymorphic with3 forms: sulfurata, fasciata. plagiata, noneofwhicharevalidspeciesorsubspecies. The3commongenera;Cora, Euthore, Polythoreare compared in detail and a key to males ofall 8 polythorid genera is given. INTRODUCTION We continuehere our studies ofPolythoridae with detailed considerationof thegenusEuthore.Afterthisatabularcomparison ofthe3 mostcommongenera, Cora, Polythore, Euthore,is given followedby akey toall8 generaofPolythori- dae. THE GENUS EUTHORE SELYS(1869) establishedthegenusEuthorewithfasciataas thetype species. MONTGOMERY (1967)keyed 9species and detailedtheirtype depositions. DE MARMEES (1981, 1982, 1988a)consideredtaxonomy, ecology, distributionof Venezuelan species and BICK & BICK (1990) removed Euthore terminalis (McL.) from Euthore, returning it to Cora. The 8 species inEuthore with theoccurrence ofeachby country are: fasciata (Hagen in Selys, 1853):Venezuela,Colombia, Ecuador. fassli Ris, 1914: Col. 1 Research Associate, Florida Slate Collection ofArthropods,Gainesville, Florida, USA. 276 G.H. We attempted to study specimens in most ofthe large Odonata collections, but, except for E.fasciata, disappointingly few were available, a contrast with otherPolythorid generawhichwepreviously studied.However,B.E. Montgome- ry’s unpublished notes andfigures, mostlyoftypes, wereavailableintheArchives of the InternationalOdonata Research Institute, Gainesville, Florida, and we examineddirectly types offasciata, plagiata (Selys) andmirabilis. Becausefemalesof3speciesremainundescribedandweknowofnodescription ofthelarval stage, thispaperdealsprimarilywithmales.Thesequenceofspecies is alphabetical withoutindicationofrelationship. Basic collectiondata are given in thefollowing sequence:COUNTRY (caps.), department, province, or state(ita- lics), collector or source, date, numberand sex, deposition. SPECIES KEYTOEUTHOREMALES The penis horns of 5 species figured by KENNEDY (1919) as well as the horns of2 figured by DE MARMELS (1988a) are similar. Ourexaminationof all 8 species showed thepenis tobe similar, the apical horns ofmost measuring 0.20or0.25mm. We donot considerthepenis a good diagnosticcharacter. Also, because species differenceswere not found in either abdominal appendages or body colourpattern, the key is basedentirely on wing colorpattern. Determina- tions shouldbe confirmedby species accounts, figures andtables. SELYS (1873, 1879)stated thatthefrontwingsofplagiatafemales are banded, those offasciata hyaline. This differenceis obvious in thetypesofthe taxa which westudied, but MONTGOMERY (1967)statedthatthesefemaletypes,presumablythe samespecimens, wereidentical andthatplagiata isasynonym offasciala.SELYS(1873, 1879)gaveverybriefnotes forhis Imaleplagiatasurmising thatitwasonlyavarietyoffasciala. There isnomaletype ofplagiatabutwe studiedthe maletype offasciala. DE MARMELS (1982, 1988a, 1990)assigned Venezuela specimensto E. f.fasciata (northern).E.f.plagiata(southern)and toformsulfurata(2 small northernpopulations). However, all 3 ofhis”plagiata”females hadhyaline frontwings (DE MARMELS, 1988a,p. 93) as inthe fasciatatype. Our materialofE.fasciata included2 kinds ofreadily distinguished females: those with hyaline front wings as in thefasciata type, those with banded ones as in the plagiata type. The hind wings of both kinds were very similar and overlapped in all measurements. Specimens ofE.fasciala includedmaleswhichdifferedfromall othersby the opaque yellow or cream wing color andmales in which theopaque wing color was whiteand the wing color patterns very similar. Distinction between these latterwasmanifestonly whenmaleswere foundassociatedinthesamecollection with the 2 very differentkinds offemales. One kindofmalewas collectedwith femaleshaving frontwings as inthefasciata type, theother withfemaleshaving front wings as in theplagiata type. Measurementsof hind wing color patterns ofvarious populations (Tab. II), showedthat these2 kinds ofmalesoverlapped in mostcharacters. Thus,E.fasciata is polymorphic with 3 forms. They are only Table II Acomparisonin mm ofhind wing color pattern of3forms ofEuthorefasciatamales Form Area No. Width of Dark begins Width of Widthof opaque disladof dark apical pale nodus at costa transparency "SULFURATA" Venezuela 3 8-10 3-4 9-11 3-4 "FASCIATA" Colombia 19 5-9 3-6 6-9 3-5 Venezuela 5 7-11 2-4 8-11 3-5 Ecuador 5 4-6 2-3 9-10 3-6 Associated with hyalinef.w. 5 Venez. 1 7 2 9 5 "PLAGIATA" Associated with banded f.w. 2 Colombia, Ecuador 2 6-7 3-3 5-9 5-5 Venezuela, southern 2 6-6 1-2 8-8 8-8 Venezuela, northern 2 6-7 l-l 9-9 6-7 StudyofPolythoridae 281 formsbecausewedidnot detectgeographical orecological isolationnorstructural differencesand because ofoverlap (Tab. II) in so many wing characters. The 3 formsaredesignated:.)1)sulfurata,following DE MARMELS(1982),(2)fasciata because ofassociation withfemales having colorless front wings as inthe type, (3) plagiata from associationwith females having bandedfront wings as in that type. Formsulfurata is represented by males only, all fromMirandaState, northern Venezuela.Theusually pale wing area is sometimes clearly yellow as in the DE MÄRMELS(1981) photo, sometimesonly cream-colored. Formsfasciata andplagiata occur inVenezuela,ColombiaandEcuador, both forms having been collected from the same localities. Because the male hind wing color patterns overlapped in most characters (Tab. II), some specimens could not be assigned confidently to either form. Indeed, without associated females, placement ofmost males in either form is risky. The best diagnostic character isthe slightly larger(Figs 1,2; Tab. II) apical transparency in thehind wings of some specimens offormplagiata. Despite theobviously greatdifferenceinfrontwings, thehindwings offemales ofthe 2 forms were very much alike, overlapping in every wing color pattern studied. This hind wing similarity in both sexes supports our hypothesis that neitherform is a separate species or subspecies. In each of2 collections(Colombia,Ecuador) a male was associatedwith a bandedfront wing female.Inanother fromVenezuelaamalewas associatedwith a hyaline front wing female. The fact that all 3 males (Tab. II) are essentially alikeshows thatvery similarmalesoccur closely associatedwith2 very different kinds offemales.Twokinds of femaleswithinwhatseemstobethesamespecies is similarto theconditiondescribedforPolythoreproceraSelys (BICK& BICK, 1985)and reported for Calopteryx spp. (DE MARCHI, 1990). Although meridanasometimeshasbeen consideredasubspecies offastigiata, thereis littlepossibility ofconfusing thetwo becauseofthe muchmore limited extent ofthefront wing dark infastigiata. E. meridanadiffersalso from leroii andfasciata: in meridanathehind wing (Tab. ill) dark band is much narrower (5-7 mm) than in leroii(12) and inmeridanathe widthof white(13-17 mm)is greaterthan infasciata (4-11).
