Especiallyperplexingisthefactthatthereexistregionsinwhichspecieslimits arewell-definedandotherareaswheretheybreakdown.Thespecieshavein commonashrubbyhabit,abilitytoresproutfromundergroundstemsafterfires; youngtwigsthatareusuallysquareor4-wingedincross-section;leafvenation thatisusuallyeucamptodromousproximallytobrochidodromousdistallywith apoorlydefinedmarginalvein;aplacentathatprotrudeslittleandthatiscom- SIDA21(3):1335-1354.2005 1336 BRIT.ORG/SIDA21(3) pletelyhidden bynumerousovulesatantlicsis;andseedsthatarerelatively smoothandrounded.Asimilargroup,theP.sdlularceomplex(Landrum2003), hasthesamehabitandabihtytorcsproutvigorouslyalterfires,andsmooth, round seeds, but the twigs are not winged, the venation is entirely brochidodromousandthepeltateplacentaisclearlyvisibleindissectionswith oneortworowsolovulesoneachside. CalyxstructureisoltentaxonomicallyimportantinPsidium,butintheP. grandifoUumcomplexitisquitevariableandnotusefulindefiningthegroup. Thecalyxmaybelusedandclosedexceptloraterminalporeoritcanbequite openintheintheIlowerbud.Thecalyx-lobesmaybescarcelydeveloped,orquite evident.Calyxstructureisgenerallyhelpfulatthespecificlevelinthecomplex. There is considerable variation among members of the Psidium graudijoliumcomplexandtwoorthreedistinctmorphologicalentitiesmay growtogetherorneartooneanotherForinstance1haveseenPgrandi/o/iuni,P. australcvar.australcand P.mis'^ionumgrowingtogetherattwolocalitiesin southernParaguay.InthemunicipalityofMogi-GuaguofSaoPauloquitedis- tinct formsof P.gnindifolinn], P.uustralc \'ar.austnilcandP.dusiralcvar. sujjruliuisuinallgrow.Unfortunatelyintergradationamongthesetypicalforms iscommon,andinsomeareasdistinctionsseemtodisappearThus,drawing specieslimitsisquitedifficult.Iliavechosentoacceptthreespecies,butallcan beexpected tointergradewithat leastoneotherinthecomplex.Psidium australcIdivideintothreevarieties,butothersmightconsidertheseentities species.IntergradationbetweenPaustralcandPgrandijoHumiscommonand 1havefounditexpedienttoacceptnumerousspecimensbetweenthesespecies as"intermediates"withoutapplyingonenameortheotliertothem.Itispos- siblethatthegroupthat1acceptasPaustfalcvav.urgcuicu}nhasoriginated throughintrogressionfromPgrandifoUum. Hybridization with themoredistantlyrelated Psidiumgumccnscalso seemstobecommonandfurthercomplicatestaxonomy.Thereforeal<eyispro- videdthatdistinguishesthatspeciesfromthePgrandijoHumcompiex. 1. Antherselongate,1-3mmlong,usually3-6timesaslongaswide;placentalami- nar,sometimespeltate;tertiaryveinsoftenproducingaladderdikepattern;calyx closedornearlyso;hairsoflowerleafsurfaceusuallymoreorlesserect,mostly nearlystraight,usuallyreddishbrown P.guineense 1. Anthersnotelongate,0,-5-1 mmlong,about2timesaslongaswide;placenta mound-like,notlaminarorpeltate;tertiaryveinsreticulate;calyxclosedoropen;hairs oflowerleafsurfacegenerallyappressedandstraighttodenselytangled,usually graytowhite P.grandifoliumcomplex WhenstudyingthePsidiumgriiudijoUumcompfexitisimportanttoconsider theiollowingcharacteristics;f)typeanddensityofhaircoveringoritsabsence; 2)peduncfclength;3)calyx-lobeshapeanddegreeofcalyxclosure;4)presence orabsenceotdichasia;5)lealsizeandshape;5)leaftexture.Thedifferencesare LANDRUM,REVISIONOFTHEPSIDIUMGRANDIFOLIUMCOMPLEX 1337 outlinedinthekeybelow.Notoneofthecharacteristicsisentirelyreliable,but considerationofthemallseemstoworkwellindistinguishingthesespeciesin Argentina,Paraguay,andusuallyinParana,SaoPaulo,andBahia,Brazil.InMi- nasGerais,GoiasandtheDistritoFederal,Brazildistinctionsarelessclear. Perret(1999)proposedthatthenumerousnamespublishedbyChodatand Hassler(1907)andattributedtoBarbosaRodrigues,someofwhichappearas synonymsinthispaper,shouldnotbeacceptedbecausetheiroriginaldescrip- tionsarebriefandappeartobeamerelistofnameswithminimalinformation. Ibelievethatthesedescriptions,althoughbrief,areinaccordancewiththeIn- ternationalCodeofBotanicalNomenclature(Greuteretal.2000).Fortunately theyareusuallyrepresentedbygoodtypecollectionsandmaybeidentified accurately. ForillustrationsIhaveusedportionsofscannedherbariumspecimens. Ecology—ThespeciesofPsidiumvaryfromforesttreestosavannashrubs andgrowincoastalvegetationtomountainoushabitats.Thegreatmajorityof thecollectionsoftheP.grandifoliumcomplexhavebeenmadebeloM'1200m elevationandintheinteriorofSouthAmerica.Speciesofthecomplexareshrubs andsubshrubsandgrowingrasslandsorinshrubbyvegetation(cerrado)and areresistanttofiresorotherdisturbance(butperhapsnotgrazing),resprouting fromundergroundorsurfacelevelstems,beingsimilartotheP.salutarecom- plexinecology(Landrum2003).DuringfieldstudiesinArgentinaandPara- guayIhavenoticedthatthesespeciespersistinthenarrowstripofnaturalveg- etationbetweenroadsandpastures,butdonotdo wellinthepastures themselves. TheclimatesinwhichtheP.grandifoliumcomplexgrowsoftenhavedis- tinctdryandwetseasons,withfreezingtemperaturesbeingrareornon-exis- tent.CommonlyassociatedwiththemareothergeneraofMyrtaceae(e.g., Campomanesia,Eugenia,andMyrcia);Poaceae,Fabaceae,andAsteraceaeoften dominatethevegetation. Suggestionsforfuturework.—Whydothesespeciesseemtomergeinsome areasandremaindistinctinothers?Inareaswherethedistinctionscontinue, somesortofisolatingmechanismsmustexist.Whatarethebarrierstohybrid- izationandunderwhatcircumstancesdotheybreakdown?Whatarethepol- linators,thephenologicalpatterns,andbreedingsystemsofthesespecies?These areallquestionsthatcanbestbeansweredbyfieldstudiesandperhapscon- currentlaboratoryworkinSouthAmericaandofferinterestingopportunities forbiologists.ThehabitatssupportingspeciesoftheP.grandifoliumcomplex 1338 BRIT.ORG/SIDA21(3) areunfortunatelyrapidlybeingconvertedtopastureandagriculture.Abetter understandingoltheirbiologyisurgentlyneededforthelong-termconserva- tionofthesespecies.
