Introduction Glaphyr'ahattorI1(0HBAYAsHI,1954)isaratherraremo1orchinemonophagouson Elaeagnus(Elaeagnaceae), and is knowntooccur ineasternHonshuand southern HokkaidooftheJapaneseIslands. Thoughhavingunico1oredsmallblackbodyordi- narylookinginfaciesatfirstsight,Ghattor11isprovidedwithsuchhighlyspecialized structuresasthefinevelvetypubescenceontheantennaestarting fromsegment3.the vestigialpresternal process, thesimpleanal veinof thehindwing,andsoon. It is doubtlessthatanewhighertaxonshouldbeproposed forGhatto,-t1sinceitsautapo- morphiesareclearlydiscriminated fromthoseofany other congeners of thegenus Glaphy1a' NEwMAN. Themainpurposeofthepresentpaper istoerectthesubgenusY』(nlat)glaph、1-(1 nov for G hatto,-lI,andalsotoredescribetwocomponentsofthenewsubgenus,with designationofthelectotypeforthetypespecies. SubgenusYanlatoglaphyranov. Typespecies: Motel'chushatto11'10HBAYAsHl,1954. Small-sizedmo1orchineofwhollyblackishcoloration, with relativelyshortap- pendages.Colourblacktoblackishbrown,moreor lessdull, withoutmaculationon elytra. Hairs and pubescencesparse in general, without pubescent maculation on pronotumand ventral surface;antennae,clothedwith fne velvety pubescence from segment3toterminus. Head less voluminous withlargebut weakly prominenteyes,almost equal in width tothebaseofpronotum;genaeveryshallow;mandiblesshort,brie yhookedat apices;maxillary andlabial palpi relatively short. Antennae longas orslightly as 224 TatsuyaNils、T() longer thanbody in 11-segmented,slightly broadened towardsapical segments, , withscapehardlyclavate,middlesegmentscompressed,terminalsegmentsimple,not pedunculateat theextremity in(3.Pronotumelongate,moderately narrowedapicad, withsmall tuberclesatsidesbehindmiddle,withdiscalmostevenlypuncturedexcept for thesmoothareasatsidesandposterior tomiddle.Elytralong,about14timesas longaswide,attainingtoabdominal tergite3,completelycoveredwiththesidesof metathorax, narrowlydehiscent at least inapical fifth,completely attenedinprofile evennearapices.Hindwingreachingtergite6,withsimpleveintA3十2A,andwithout vein3A.Presternalprocessvestigial.invisibleinexternal view.Legswithhindfemur weaklyclavate,tarsalsegmentsshort. Medianlobeofmalegenitalorganmarkedlylongandslender,elongate,withlong medianstruts,dorsalplatesimply narrowedapicad. Tegmenwithparameresaturate- formed,withafewveryshortsetaeatapex.Tergite8longerthanwide.Sternite8sub- quadrate,concaveatmiddleofapicalmargin. Range. Japan:S.Hokkaido(0shimaPen)andE.Honshu;China:Sichuanand Gansu Notes. Itmaybepossible toestablisha full genus forG hattor11 because of suchhighlyspecializedcharacterstatesasmentionedabove.Itisdoubtlessthatthepu- bescenceontheantennae,thevestigialpresternalprocessandthewingvenationinthe typespeciesareallautapomorphiesseparablefromanyothercongenersofGlaphy1a'. Inthemembersofthenominotypica1subgenus,thefinevelvetypubescenceonthean- tennaestartsfromsegment4or5,thepresternalprocessisusuallywelldevelope and thehindwingsareprovidedwithwelldevelopedvein3A.Thenewsubgenusiscom- posedofthe followingtwoisolatedspeciesfromJapanandChina. ThereportofAceraldzuensemaybemisidentificationoftheElaeagnusspecies(nee YUzAwA,1977). Notes. Nogeographical variation isshown in thespecimenslistedabove. The specimensfromvariouslocalitiesofEastJapanaslistedaboveperfectlyagreeinevery respectintheco1orartion,bodysizeandotherexternalmorphology. Thisspecies wasconsidered tobeoneof the rarest species in the Japanese mo1orchinesuntil thediscoveryofthehostplant in1982bythe lateKenichiEMoTo. Forinstance,thehabitatatthetypelocalitynear “Inadanoborito” wasdeterioratedby urbanization,andonly a fewadditionalspecimenswerecollectedbeforethe1970's.
