One sig n ifica n t example concerns the girl who wishes to major in health, physical education and recreation. There is, at the present time, lim ited opportunity for such training in most of the Catholic teacher education institu­ tions in the United S tates. One of the factors affecting the situ ation is the attitu de of individuals in the different re­ lig io u s orders throughout the country who lack true understanding and appreciation of adequate standards for effective programs in health, physical education and recreation. This is caused in part by the fact that so l i t t l e has been done in the area of profess­ ional education in this fie ld in Catholic colleges for women. The w riter is of the opinion that in order to provide the necessary incentive for the promotion of a professional physical education program, certain standards applicable to Catholic teacher education in stitu tio n s would have to be developed. Exist­ ing conditions would have to be surveyed in order to determine
