All thespecies belonging to thesubgenus Apotomopterusof the genusCarabus (s lat)haveawell developedchitinouspiece, namedspinula'), at thedorsal baseof endophallus, as thebasicstructure of malegenital organ. Although its taxonomic importancehas not alwaysbeen takenintoaccount bypreviousauthors, thissmall scleriteispeculiarinsizeandshapeaccordingeither tospeciesor tosubspecies, and seems useful for identification andclassification of lower taxa. On the basis of this genitaliccharacter,taxonomic relationshipamongthemembersofthesamesubgenus shouldbereconstructed,at least partly. InCa,・abus(A)saute,・1, whichwasdescribedbyRoEscHKE(1912, p 4) from the centralpart ofTaiwan, thespinulaiswell-developed,spine-orpeg-likeinshape・and isobliquelysituatedalittletotheleftofthemid-lineatthedorsalbaseofendopha11us. Althoughonceregarded byBREuNING(l932, p 206)asasynonymofC. (A) cha,1g1 HAUSER, thisspeciesis now widely known to be distinct, since the same author re- cognisedsoinhisotherarticle(1957,p 275). However, littlehasbeen revised onits taxonomicstatus based upon the morphologyof genitalia, above all ot thespinula, bycontrastwithits relativesdistributed in thesoutheasternpart oftheChineseCon- tinent Throughmyrecentstudyonthedetailedstructureofmalegenital organ,I have becomeaware of the fact that several formsof continental Apo1omopterushitherto describedasindependentspeciesarein fact notsoremarkablydifferent fromC.(A) sauter1,andhavecometotheconclusionthattheyshouldbeunifiedintoasingletaxon atthespecieslevel. So faras Ihaveexamined,thefollowingfivetaxaareconsidered tobeconspecificwiththeTaiwanesespecies:C.(A)cha,1g1HAUSER,C.(4.) kleinfeldi- l) Terms used for thissmallscleritearedifferent accordingtoauthors, e.g.,''phanere” or “epine chitinisee” (MEURGUEset LEDoUx,1966), ''dentesclerificato” (STULANI,1967), ''ligula” (IsHIKAwA, 1973), “scleritebasal” (DEUvE, 1988, 1990; DEUvEet lMURA, 1990), ''sclerite dentiforme” (DEUvE, 1991; DEUvEet IMURA, 1991),''spinula” (DEUvEet IMURA, 1993),etc. Here Iamadopting, though provisionally, theterm''spinula” Yuki IMuRA anusDEUvE,C.(A)p11am1DEUvE,C.(A)elegant1'(:'o//1'sDEUvEet IMURA,andC.(A) yunkaicusDEUvE. In thispaper, I amgoing todowngradeall ofthem to thesubspeciesofC.(A) sauteriwhichhasthepriorityovertheother fivenames. Inaddition, Iwilldescribea subspeciesof the latter from thesouthern part of Taiwan under thename of new subsp.shimizuian1lsnov. Astheresult,RoEscHKE'sspeciesisclassifiedintosevensub- species. I havebeenunabletoexaminesomeothertaxa2)whichseemverysimilarat least superficiallyto thespeciesunder consideration. Besides, our knowledge isstill too poorabout theCarabinadistributedinChinaandtheneighbouringareastomakea satisfactory discussion on thegeographical variation of such apolytypica1species. Forthesereasons,Iwillonlygiveapreliminaryrevisioninthispaper. In the holotypespecimen from Shui-she- liao(Fig 2), thebasal foveaeofthepronotumareveryshallow, theelevatedpartsof elytra1intervalsareratherdistinctlyprominent,andthepreapicalemarginationofthe elytraisrather deep (cf.Fig24). However, in thespecimens from Mt. Kuan-tao Shan(Fig.1),about70kmdistanttothenorthbyeastfromthetypelocality,thebasal foveaeofthepronotumaredeeper (cf.Fig.16),theelytralsculptureissmoother, and the preapica1emargination is shallower (cf.Fig 25). Besides, as shown in Fig 3, theLa-IaShanspecimenisalsopeculiarinfacies,whichischaracterisedbylargersize, largeandstronglyconvexpronotum,andcomparativelyslenderelytra,thoughasingle malespecimen I wasabletoexamineisnotsufficient foradiscussiononitstruetax- onomicposition. Furtherinvestigationsarethereforeneededforsolvingtheproblem ofgeographicalandindividual variationsofthisspeciesevenintheIslandofTaiwan. 2. Carabus(Apotomopterus)sauterishiml'zm'anusIMURA,subsp nov. (Figs 4,17,26,34) Length:25.3-28.5mm(fromapicalmarginofclypeustoapicesofelytra). Sinceonlythemaletypeandanothermalespecimenarenowavailableforstudy,itis difficulttodecideifthedifferenceisgeographicalorindividual.
