It is difficult to overstate the importance of studying practical Halacha, for everyone knows that "aboor cannot be sin-fearing, and an ignoramus cannot be pious" (PirkeiAvot 2:5). This is especially true in this area where there are an exceedingly large number of details and it is urgently necessary to simplify the issues and explain them in an .>, appropriate manner, so that this body ofknowledge can be assimilated by younger students. The Jewish people, a priestly kingdom and holy nation, have been commanded to safeguard their sanctity and not to contaminate J'II' themselves with forbidden foods that defile both body and soul, asthe Torah emphasizes many times: "You shall sanctify yourselves, and you shall be holy" (Vayikra 11:45), "For you are aholy people to the Lord t•.' your God" (Devarim 14:21). And similarly the Rambam writes in his xiv xv Introduction by the Rosh HaYeshiva HaRav Baruch Gigi Mishneh Torah (Hilchot Ma'achalot Assurot 17:32) asfollows: "Whoever is careful about these matters brings extra holiness and purity into his soul and refines his soul for the sake of God's name, asitisstated: 'You shall sanctify yourselves, and you shall be holy, for I am holy" In the blessings recited before the Shema, we ask: "Inspire us to Preface understand and discern, to perceive, learn and teach, to observe, do and fulfillgladly allthe teachings ofyour Torahs' The present book embodies learning and teaching, and above allit provides the tools to fulfill and observe the commandments of God. It exemplifies the combination oftheoretical study and practical application that must be found in all areas ofthe Torah and our lives. We extend our congratulations to Rav Pinchas for his twofold accomplishments - for the oral dissemination of Torah in his classes and for the publication ofhis teachings in written form. In this way the wellsprings ofhis Torah will gush forth and cross oceans, bringing ben- :m/j~ ~7 :-I;J:1: i~lJ71ll11iWl?~T;17~~770tJ~~lJi1J1iPQ~ efit to young students' world over.
