NOTES A NOTE ON THE GEOGRAPHIC RANGE O—F ANTENNARIA AROMATICA EVERT(ASTERACEAE: INULEAE) In thespringof 1980, LedyardStebbinsandIdiscoveredaherbariumspecimencollected byArthurCronquistatQuadCreek,BeartoothPass,Montanathatappea- red to be different from any other Antennaria known to us. Later that summer, avisit to the herbariumofMontanaStateUniversity(MONT) turnedupseveralotherspecimensofthetaxon, identifiedvariouslyasA. alpina(L.)Gaertner,A. mediaE. Greene,andA.umhrinellaRydberg. We wereabletocollectandstudyspecimensfromQuadCreek{Bayer&Stebhins 8092),TigerButtesouthofGreatFalls,Montana{Bayer&Stebbins8113), and Mt. SacajaweanorthofBozeman, Montana{Bayer&Stebbins8104), the first two collections being eventually cited as paratypes ofthe new species. It was immediately obvious to us that this very glandular, aromatic,plantwasanundescribedspeciesoiAntennaria. Aboutthesame timewebecameawarethat ErwinEvert, whowasworkingonafloristic treatmentofParkCounty, Wyoming, hadcometothesameconclusion, after collecting the species on limestone talus near Cody, Wyoming. In collaborationwithus,hepublishedthenewspecies,callingitA.aromatica Evert(1984). EvertdescribedtherangeasParkCo.,WyomingtoCascade Co., Montana(Evert 1984). Asaresultofasearchthroughallareaherbaria,adistributionmapwas presented recently, showing the approximately 30 known sites for the speciesinWyoming,Montana, withtwoslightlydisjunctpopulationsin Alberta(Bayer 1989B). My ideaofthegeographical distribution ofthe specieshaschangedlittlefromEverts(1984)firstdescription;itsprimary geographical distribution is the front ranges ofthe Rockies from near Cody, Wyoming north to the Alberta/Montana border (Bayer 1989B). Somedisjunctpopulationsoccurinpreviouslyunglaciatedportionsofthe AlbertafrontrangenorthtonearMountainPark,Alberta(Bayer 1989B). InarecentdiscussionoftherangeoftherecentlydescribedA.aromatica Chmielewski & Chinnappa(1988) accepted it as adistinct species, but someoftheeightspecimenstheycitedasA.aromaticaaremisidentified. I havebeenabletodeterminebyinspectionordeducethatmostofthefive specimenscited by Chmielewski &Chinnappa(1988) from Montanaare A.aromatica(sensuBayer1989B).Threeofthespecimensrepresentcollec- tionsfromsitespreviouslyknowntome;Cronquist8092(whichoriginally ledustothetypelocality),Neeley&Smith1663(atornearthetypeloca- lity), and Daubenmire48231 (sameasBayeretal. MT-734citedinBayer Sh)a 14(3):5()5. 1991. 506 1989A).IhavenotseenFonellas.n.,butitislikelytobeA.aromaticasensu Bayer, 19H9B)asitisfromthepeakadjacenttoMt. Sacajawea,whereA. aromatica is abundant. One specimen, Suksdorf 1063 is clearly non- glanckilarwith light brown phyllariesand upsurgent stolons and in my opiniontypicalA. /nuhrinellaRydberg(sensuBayer 1988). Thespecimen fromsouthernAlbertacouldpassforA.aromatica(Stebbins,pers.comm.) and iswithintheextendedrangeofthespeciesrecentlypresented byme (Bayer 1989B). I was unable to obtain the British Columbiacollection {Selhy289)forverification. The most significant and controversial range extension they Chmielewski&Chinnappa 1988)reportisBeli&Johnson766fromMono Co.,California. Afterexaminationofthisnon-glandular, black-phyllaried specimen, IconcludeitisalpineA. mediaE. Greene(sensuBayer 1988). StebbinsandEvert,afterexaminingthisspecimen,concurthatitisclearly A. media(Stebbins, pers. comm.). In my opinion, two oi the eight specimens that Chmielewski & Chinnappa(1988)havesitedasA. aromatica, including themajorrange extension toCalifornia, aremisidentified.
