In thesummer of 2005, alongseries ofcarabidspecimens belonging to the Rhlgocalabuscomplexwas foundfromthetwolocalitiesat thesouthernmostpartof theMinShanMountainsstretchingfromnorthtosouthalongtheeasternbankofthe MinJiangRiver.Afteracarefulcomparativestudy,wehavecometotheconclusion that thespeciesinquestionmustbenewtoscience. Inthepresentpaper,wearegoing todescribeitasanewspeciesbelongingto thegenusT11c/1、,calabus(sensuIMURA, 2002)inthesubtribeCarabina.IncasethesubtribeCarabinaisregardedasequivalent tothegenusCa・labus(s lat)asisadoptedbymostEuropeanauthors,itwillbeplaced inthesubgenusRhigoc(」1-abusof thegrandgenusCal・abus.Theabbreviationsused hereinarethesameasthoseexplainedinpreviouspapersofthefirstauthor(cf.IMuRA, 1990,p.139;2002,p.130). Uppersurfaceofbody notstrongly polished,withthecolorationdark reddish copperytodarkbrownoftenwithafaintgreenishtinge,ornearlyentirelyblackishor greenishinsomeindividuals;venterandappendagesbrownishblack,thoughtibiaeand basalpartsofmandibles,paIpiandantennaearealittlemorestronglyreddish. Headnothypertrophicinbothsexes,withtheeyesalmostnormal insizeandde- greeofprotrusion; fronsweaklyconvexabove,oftenroughlyrugu1oseandsometimes scatteredwithsmall punctures; frontal furrowsnotsowideandnotdeeplyconcave, andirregularlyrugu1oseonthesurface;vertextoneck irregularlyandroughlywrin- kled and often sporadically scattered with vaguepunctures; retinaculum of right mandiblenarrowerandsmallerthanthatoftheleftone,withtheanteriortoothusually alittleshorterthantheposterioronbothsides;terminalsegmentsofpalpinotremark- ablydilatedinbothsexes;penultimatesegmentoflabialpalpusbisetose;mediantooth of mentum shorter than lateral lobes, slightly protruded ventrad, and triangularly shapedthoughnotsharply pointedat thetip;submentumbisetose;antennaenotso long,barelyreachingbasalthirdofelytrainmaleandreachingbasalquarterinfemale; hairlessventraldepression,orthiridium,ofmaleantennaerecognizable fromsegment 5 to9or10. Notes. Thepresent new specieswascollected fromtwodifferentsites in the alpinezoneover 4,100monthesamemountainrange. Thepopulation fromZhen- jiangguanissomewhatdiffferent fromthatofJiaochangbainhavinglargersizeonav- erage,relativelylargepronotum,longerandslendererelytra,narrowerprimarycostae, etc.Alltheseare,however,consideredtobeamerevariationwithinthesamespecies mainlyduetothedifferenceofaltitudeofeachlocality,andwehesitatetoseparate themintotwodifferentsubspecies. The new species is characterized by less hypertrophic head, irregularly and roughly rugose-punctatedorsalsurfaceof theheadandpronotum, relativelysmall pronotum,onlyweaklyconvexpronotumandelytra, tri-orheptaploidheterodynamjc elytra1sculpturewiththestrongestprimarycostae,andlongandslenderappendages, NcwTlac/n'(,t1;・alii、.,fromNorthernSichuan etc. ItismostcloselyalliedtoTpus1oSEMENow(1898,p362)described from“Sun_ pan” (=Songpan)ofnorthernSichuan,but isreadilydiscriminated fromthatspecies mainlybythefollowingrespects:1)eyeslessstronglyprotrudedlaterad;2)pronotum relativelysmall,withmuchmoreunevendiscaIsurface,deeperbasal foveaeandless stronglyprojectedhindangles;3)elytrausuallyalittlelongerandslenderer,withmore effacedshoulders;4)aedeagusslenderer, lessstronglyarcuate,withthemedianper_ tionlessstronglyinflatedrightlaterad,apicallobealittlelongerandslenderer,andless remarkablybent right lateradindorsal view;endophalIuswith 0LandPREsmaller, PARlargerandmorestronglyprojecteddorsad. FromTpseudopus1oDEuvE(1996,p 22)described from“va11eea10kmausud- est deSanggarpar, env 4200metres” ofnorthernSichuan, T popeknov. is distin_ guishedbymuchslendererbody,lesshypertrophicboa lesstransversepronotumwith shorterhindangles,andshorterapicallobeofaedeaguswhichislessremarkablybent ventradin lateralview. ItisnecessarytocomparethenewspecieswithTko1・sake、、,1SEMENo、v(1898,p. 361)described from“Ta-tz'ao-pinsupraangustiasCho-dgi-gou,baudprecutaburbe Lun-ngan-fu,att ic.-13.000'sm” Regrettably,however, itisimpossibletomakea fullcomparativestudybetweenthetwospeciesbasedonbothsexes,sinceSEMENow's specieshasbeenknownsofaronly fromasinglefemalespecimen.So faraswehave examinedtheholotypeof T、/,orsako、、,1nowpreservedintheZoological Instituteof Academy ofSciences(St.Petersburg), thenew speciesseemstobedistinguishable from SEMENows' raceby lightercolorationofappendages, narrower pronotum with more remarkably protruded front angles and less strongly uneven discal surface, shorterandrobusterelytrawithnarrowerprimarycostaeandlessstronglydeveloped otherintervals.
