Key words Pierida e,Coliadinae ,Gandoca, Ganclaca harina ,new subspecies, Simuk, Batu Islands ,Mentawai Archipelago, Indonesia, tropical rainforest. Introduction The genus Ganduca Moore, 1906 censists of two species, the type species G, han'na (Horsfi e[l1d8,29 ]oc)curring from Assam, Sundaland to the Lesse rSundas, and G butyraya (Butl e1r87,5) replacing it from Sulawesi to New Guinea (Yata 1,981) . In the course ofour revisional research on the genus Gandoca, we fbund a new subspecies of Gl han'n aoccurring in Simuk in the Batu Island slocate bdetween Nias and Siberut ,Mentawai Archipelago, Indonesia. Hitherto GL hahaa has been classified into four subspecies within Mentawai Archipelago: diytant Firuhstorfbr ,1910 from Engano and ?Nias ,berttt aCorbet ,1941 from Siberut ,porana Corbet, 1941 from N,Pagi, and babiensi sHanafUsa, 1994 from Babi, Therefore ,we have at leas t5subspecie sfrom the Archipelago .This butterf lymainly inhabjt slowland fores tor around fores tedges probably because it sfood-plan tis P'entilago oblongrfoha which grows in the forgs t.It seems that fores tspecies oecurring in Mentawai Archipelago a,long with their remarkable geographic yariation such as G han'na c,an provide valuable infbrmatio nfbr biogeographi cevaluation and discussio nof this region. In addi- tion, this fdscinati ncghain of island sis also very important from the viewpoint of diversity conservation in South-Ea sAtsia, because of the peculiar fauna and flor awith each island having endemic ta)ca . A waye of lumbering or deforestati oins rapidly spreading to it, however, and World Wildlif eFund (WWF) has started activities to protec tthe wildlife and culture of these island swhich it considers a matter of urgency (WWF, I980).
