Abstract A new subspeciesofCa・,abus (Apotomopte,・us)、1italis1isdescribed
fromNortheastLaosunderthenameofC.(A)v.phoopanenslsnov.
Carabus vltalzsi was described by LApoucE (1916, pp. 85-87) from “Xieng
Khouang,ausommetducolena11antaBan-Ninh” ofcentre-northernpartofLaos,
andisknowntobeasolecomponentofthesubtribeCarabinaoccurringinthatcoun-
try,thoughnotstrictlyendemicbutalsorecordedfromthenorthwesternpartofNorth
Vietnam. TheVietnameseraceisrepresentedbysubsp mourzlne1DEUVEet IMURA,
1993.
Atthebeginningof2000,Mr.SatoshiKolwAYAmadeaninvestigationmainlyfor
thethecrinebutterflieson thenorthernslopeofMt.Phoo-Panin Xam-Nua(=Sam-
Neua)ProvinceofNortheastLaosandsucceededincollectingaseriesofLAPouGEs'
species.ThePhoo-Pan formdiffersindetailsfrombothofthetwoknownraces,andI
amgoingtodescribeitasanewsubspeciesinthefollowinglines.

Carabus(Apotomopterus)vitalisiphoopaltensisIMURA,subsp nov.
(Figs2,4)
Length: 30.0-34.5mm(includingmandibles).
Thisnewsubspeciesismostcloselyalliedtothenominotypica1form,butisdis-
tinguishablefromthelatterbythefollowingpoints:1)alittlesmallerinsizeandslen-
derer jnproportion;2)pronotumalittlenarrowerandmorestronglycontractedto-
wards hindangles whicharealittlemorestrongly protrudent posteriad and more
sharplypointedattips;3)elevatedpartsofelytra1intervalsalittlelessprominently
rajsed;4)apicalpartofaedeagusapparentlynarrowerandslenderer,weaklybutobvi-
ouslyconstrictedatbasalthirdindorsalview,andtriangularlydepressedonthedorsal

Nlotes. Allthespecimensofthetypeseriesofthepresentnewsubspecieswere
collected from along thepathbetweenthevillageofSelui andthesummit of Mt.
Phoo-Pan. Theywereunderhibernationanddugouteither fromthesoiler fromde-
cayedtrunkslyingonthefloorofthevirginforestconsistingofevergreenbroadleaved
treespartlymixedwithcertainkindofcypress.

ムネワ (サムヌーア)省のphoo-pan山北麓から採集されたウイタリストゲオサムシを新亜種と
認め, subsp.pl,oopanens,snov.として記載した. 既知の2亜種からは, 体形や上翅彫刻, 3交尾
器形態の違いにより識別される.
