Abstract AnewspeciesofthegroupofLatht・obium(s.str)pollensisdescribed
andillustratedunderthenameofLath1・obium(s.str)kusamai.Itwasobtainedfromunder
deadleavesonMt.Sobatsubu-yamaatthenorthernpartofShizuokaPrefectureincentral
Honshu,Japan.
ExaminingapterousLathrobiumfromJapan, Ihave foundaninterestingspecies
obtained from under dead leavesonMt. Sobatsubu-yamaat thenorthernpart of
ShizuokaPrefectureincentralHonshu,Japan.Thisspeciesseemstobeplacedinthe
groupofLathrobium(s.str)pollensbecauseofhavingsimilarlyremarkablesecond
sexualcharactersoftheabdominalsternitesinthemale.
A量eracarefulexamination,ithasbecomeclearthatthespeciesisnewtoscience
onaccountofdisagreementinconfigurationofsecondarysexualcharactersoftheab-
dominalsternitesandofthegenitalorganinthemale. Itwillbedescribedinthepres-
entpapertothememoryofKeiichiKusAMA,thefirstpresidentoftheJapaneseSociety
ofColeoptero1ogyandaspecialistofcerambycidbeetles.Thetypeseriesofthenew
speciestobedescribedisdepositedinthecollectionoftheLaboratoryofEntomology,
TokyoUniversityofAgriculture.

Bodylength: 6.8-7.2mm(from frontmarginofheadtoanalend);2.9-3.0mm
(fromfrontmarginofheadtoelytra1apices).
Bodyparallel-sidedandsomewhatdepressedabove;apterous.Colourdark red-
dishbrownandmoderatelyshining,withmandiblesandantennaesomewhat paler,
palpi,legsandapicaltwoabdominalsegmentsyellowishbrown.

Male. Headsubtrapezoida1andgently elevatedmedially,as longasbroador
slightly transverse (width/length=1.09), widest at posterior fourth andmore
very
strongly narrowedanteriadthanposteriad; lateral sides gently arcuate; frontal area
transverselyflattenedandglabrousbetweenantennal tubercles,providedwithacon-
spicuoussetiferouspunctureinsideeachantennaltubercle;surfacesparingly,distinctly
andsetiferouslypuncture thepuncturesbecomingcloseronlatero-posteriorpartsand
coveredwithextremelyfinecoriaceousgroundsculptureonlyvisibleunderhighmag-
nification;eyesminuteandalmost flat,thelongitudinaldiameteraboutone-fourthas
longaspostocular part.Antennaeelongate,extendingalittlebeyond themiddleof

3rdand4thsubopaque,theremainingsopaque,1stsegmentrobustandstronglydilated
apica morethan2.5timesas longasbroa 2ndwellconstrictedat thebase,about
1.5timesaslongasbroad,nearlyahalfaslongasanddistinctlynarrower(2nd/1st=
0.63)than1st,3rdgentlydilatedapica remarkablylongerthanbroad(length/width=
1.60),alittlelonger(3rd/2nd=1.14)andbroader(3rd/2nd=1.l4) than2n 4th to the
apicalmostequal inwidth tooneanother,4thnearly15timesaslongasbroadbut
slightlyshorterthan3rd(4th/3rd=0.95),5thlessthan t5timesaslongasbroadand
subequa1inlengthto4th,6thsomewhat longerthanbroad(length/width=1.36)but
slightlyshorterthan5th(6th/5th=0.94),7thalittlelongerthanbroad(length/width=
1.28)butslightlyshorter than6th(7th/6th=0.94),8thto10thequal inlengthtoone
another,eachalittlelonger thanbroad(length/width=1.20),11th fusiform, twiceas
longasbroadandmorethant.5timesaslongas10th,subacuminateattheapex.
Pronotumoblongthoughsomewhatnarrowedposteriadandmoderatelyconvex
medially, distinctly longer thanbroad (length/width=1.20) and apparently longer
(pronotum/head=1.25)andslightlybroader(pronotum/head=1.04) thanhead,lateral
sidesnearlystraightinanteriortwo-thirdsandgentlyarcuateinposteriorthir(i,anterior
marginbroadlyrounded,posteriormarginnearlytruncate anterioranglesobtuseand
notvisiblefromabove,posterioronesnarrowlyrounded;surfacemuchmoreclosely
coveredwithcoarsersetiferouspuncturesthanonheadexcept foranarrowmedian
smoothlinethroughthelengthofpronotum.Scutellumsubtriangular,providedwitha
fewminutesetiferouspuncturesonthesurface.Elytrasubtrapezoidal,somewhatdi_
latedposteria alittletransverse(width/length=1.18),distinctlyshorter(elytra/prone_
tum=0.73)andslightlybroader(elytra/pronotum=1.04)thanpronotum; lateralsides
feeblyarcuate,posteriormarginsomewhatemarginateatthemiddle;posteriorangles
broadlyrounded;surfacecloselyandroughlypuncture bearingavaguedepression
behindscutellum.Legsrelativelyshort;profemurmarkedlythickened,thoughabruptly

hollowedinbasalhaltontheinner faceandprovidedwithfivecomb-liketransverse
rowsoffineyellowishsetaewithinthehollow;meso-andmetatibiaenormal;1stto4th
protarsa1segmentsstronglywidened;lastmetatarsalsegmentshorterthanthefourpre-
cedingsegmentstogether.
Abdomenelongate,slightlydilatedto the7thsegment, and thenabruptlynar-
rowedtowardstheanalend,3rdto7thtergiteseachtransverselydepressedalongthe
base, moderately closely, finely and superficially punctured and covered with fine
brownishpubescence,8thtergitemuchmoresparinglyandmorefinelypuncturedthan
ontheprecedingtergites;8thsternitesemicircularlyexcisedatthemiddleofposterior
marginandshallowly,longitudinallydepressedinfrontoftheexcision,surfaceofthe
depressionmorecloselyprovidedwithfineblackishsetaethaninotherparts;7thster-
nitemoreshallowlyandmorebroadlyemarginateatthemiddleofposteriormargin
thanin81hsterniteanddepressedbeforetheemarginationintheformofahorseshoe,
thesurfaceofthedepressionmorecloselysetosethaninotherpartsexcept forasmall
glabrouspartatthemiddlejustbeforeposteriormargin.
Genitalorganelongate,basalpiecerelativelysmallandglobular;medianlobere-
markablyshorterthan fusedparamere,providedwithawellsclerotizedplateonthe
ventralside,theplatebeinglongrhomboidalinform,widestbehindthemiddleand
stronglynarrowedbothbasadandapicad.Fusedparameremoreor lessasymmetrical
inbasalhalf,graduallynarrowedtowardanabruptconstrictionneartheapex,whichis

prolongedlikeaspearheadasseenfromdorsalsideandcurveddorsadinapicalhalfin
profile;surfaceprovidedwithafinelongitudinal carinaoneachsideof themedian
line,thoughthecarinaebecomeobsoletenearthemiddle.
Female. Similarin faciesandbodysizetomale,buttheapical twoabdominal
stemitesaresimple.
Typeseries. Holotype: ,allotype: Mt.Sobatsubu-yama,Haibara,Shizuoka
,
Prof.,Honshu,Japan,25-VII-1991,H.IsHIKAwAleg.
Distribution. Japan(centralHonshu).
Remarks. In thebuild, thepresent new speciesresembles L. (s. str) pollens
SHARP(l889, p 254),but differs from it inthe followingpoints: body somewhat
smaller,headalmostaslongasbroali,surfacemoresparinglypuncturedandcovered
withmoredistinctcoriaceousgroundsculpture;pronotum lessnarrowedposteriad;
fusedparamereofmalegenitalorganmoreelongateandprovidedwithafinelongitu-
dinal carinaoneachsideofmedianline.
Bionomics. AccordingtoMr.H.IsHIKAwA,thetypeserieswasobtainedbysift-
ingdeadleavesinabroadleaved forest,consistingofFaguscrenata,Sic、,t,artlamona-
delphaandRhododend1o',1qulnquefo(lium,onMt.Sobatsubu-yamaatanaltitudeof
about1,620m.
Etymology. ThisnewspeciesisdedicatedtothememoryofthelateDr.Keiichi
KUsAMA,whowasthefirstpresidentofoursociety.
要 約
渡辺泰明:日本から採集されたコバネナガハネカクシ種群の1新種. - 静岡市在住の石
川均氏から, 氏自身によって静岡県内から採集されたコバネナガハネカクシ種群に含まれる数
種をご惠与いただいた. これを検討した結果, その中から1新種を見いだしたので, Lat/,,-o_
blum(s.str)kusamaiと命名・記載した. 本種は装麦粒山の標高l,620m付近の広葉樹林帯に堆積
した落葉下から採集されたもので, tSliの第7および第8腹板に表われる第二次性徴がコバネナ
. ,,, ガハネカクシに類似してい・ｳし かし よ り小型で 頭 がより強く前方に狭まり 頭 盾から頭
頂にかけての部分の点刻がより疎で, また雄の交尾器の形状が異なっていることによって容易
に区別される.
なお, 種小名のkusamaiは, 日本相'通目学会初代会長の故草間慶一博::L:に献名したものであ
る.
