The genus 7>-iaxomer Zaaguiajev is new to the Japanese fauna . The udult morphological characters and brie fbiolegical netes are described. Key words Tineidae, 7}iaxomera puncticulata, new species, Japan. Introduction Zagulajev (195 9e)stablished the genus 7>iaxomera ,wjth type species 7-Vhe ajutvimineiZti Sodoffsky,1830,including dark background small moths of conspicuous wing pattern of and white spots. He separated this genus from heterogeneous IVbmapqgon Schrank on the basi sof the spotted or cross-striped pattern on the forewings t,he presence of 3 apical spinules on the tarsa lsegments and the absence ofa digita lprocess in the male genital valva. Accerding to Zagulajev (1964 )t,he genus T>iaxomera include sthe mest archaic members of the subfamily Nemapogoninae, which are distribut eidn the European USSR [Russia], Siberi aC,aucasus ,Transcaucasi aa,ll of Europe, Mediterranea nregion and Asia Minor, Up to the present t,he genus 7>iaxomera comprises 6 species: T jutvimit (rSeoidZodffs 1k8y30,), Z parasitell a(HUbne r1,796) ,T caueasiella Zagu!ajex i1,959 ,71 baidensi Psetersen ,1983 ,Z Petersen1,984 Z kurdensisZagulajev,1996. However, 7-briaxomera marsica and no species havehithertobeenknown fromJapan. In May 1999, we collected day-fiying tineid moths around decaying woods of hagus crenata Blume at Mt Izumikatsuragi, southern Osaka Prefbcture ,Japan. Examination of mor- phologica lcharacters of the species reveaLed that it is a new species belonging to the genus 7leiaxoniera ,This paper deal swith the descripti oannd brie fbiologica lnotes of the new 7>'iaxomera species, Terminology used in this paper mainly fbl]ow sthose ofZagulajev (196 4an)d Robinson and Nielsen (1993 )T,he holotype and all the paratype specimens of the new species are in EntomologicalLaboratory,Graduate School Agriculture Biological preserved of and SciencesO,saka Prefi)ctureUniversity. *Present address: Sun Life Co. This species was collected at 820 m alt in the deciduous fores etfthe northern slope of Mt lzumikatsuragi (857m )where ,Flagus crenata Blume dominates . The moths were observed flyin gin middle te lat eMay during I999 and 2oo1, Most tineid adults are active at dusk or during the night, but many individual osf this species were observed running or sitting on decaying tree bark of E crenata that wa$ infeste dby a pore fungus (liomas fomentan' anuds )so,metimes actively flyin garound it in daytime . A pupal exuvia projecting from the surface ef decayin bgark indicate tshat larva eof this species feed on the decaying fungus-infest ebdeech wood (Fig IsC-D) as it was reported in 7)iaxomera .fulvimitreiZa (Sodoff s(kZya)gulaj e19v6,4) ,This species is rarely caught by the ligh ttrap. Remarks. Judging from the forewing patter nand male genita lstructures, this species is NII-Electronic Library Service TThhee LLeepipdiopdteorpoltoegiroaollogical SSoooiceityety ooff JJaapapnan 「 214 Yasuyuki MIYAMoTo,roshiya HiRowATARI and Miyuki YAMAMoTo considered to be closely related to Z fulvimit(rSoedloflfasky). However, it is distinguishable from the latte bry the differen cofe shape of valva and absence of coarse spines ofinner dorsal margin of valva in the male genitalia, In the female, this species has a characteristic signum , which is similar to that of 7:cauc αsiella Zagulajev. “ Etymology.
