Collegeof LifeSciences, HebeiUniversity, Baoding(cid:2) 071002, China Abstract(cid:2) A new species, Isometrus (Reddyanus) tibetanus sp. nov. from Tibet, China is described. For comparative purposes, Isometrus (Reddyanus) assamensis Oates, 1888, originallydescribedfromIndia, andalsodistributedin Nepal, isredescribed based on the original typematerials(holotypes) anda series of specimens deposited inthe Mus(cid:1)umNationald(cid:1)Histoire Naturelle, Paris. Key words(cid:2) Scorpion, Buthidae, Isometrus, newspecies, Tibet. 1(cid:2) Introduction Our own examination of the original type material of I. ( R.) assamensis, deposited in the Natural History The genus Isometrus was erected by Ehrenberg ( in Museum, London, revealed that at least some of the Hemprich & Ehrenberg, 1828) with Buthus ( Isometrus) specimens in this series were poorly preserved and most filum Ehrenberg, 1828 [ = Isometrus maculatus ( DeGeer, certainly pre(cid:1)adults. Moreover, the study of several 1778)] as monotypic species. Vachon ( 1972) proposed specimens from Nepal, deposited in the Mus(cid:1)um the division of the genus Isometrus into two subgenera: National d(cid:1)Histoire Naturelle, Paris, clearly suggested Isometrus Ehrenberg and Reddyanus Vachon. The thatsexual dimorphism is poorlypronounced in juveniles diagnosis for the two subgenera were indicated only in a or pre(cid:1)adults of this species. Since I. ( R.) assamensis short key and based on the relative position of certain remains poorly characterized, we decided to redescribe trichobothria. In subgenus Isometrus, trichobothrium db this species in thepresentpaper. Anewspecies, Isometrus of the fixed finger in a distal position in relation to the (R.) tibetanus sp. nov., related to I. ( R. ) assamensis trichobothria et and est; the distance between external was also described from Tibet, China. With the new trichobothria of thefemur e and e beingmore than two 1 2 discovery, the number of Isometrus species present in tofivetimes of the distance between trichobothria e and 1 China is raised to three: Isometrus ( Isometrus) maculatus d . In contrast, in subgenus Reddyanus, trichobothrium 3 ( DeGeer, 1778), Isometrus ( Reddyanus ) hainanensis db in a basal position to et, situated between et and est; Louren(cid:1)o, Qi & Zhu, 2005 and Isometrus ( Reddyanus) the distance between external trichobothria of the femur, tibetanus sp. nov. e1 and e2 always less than two times of the distance 2(cid:2) Methods and Material between e1 andd3. Vachon (1972) placed three species in the subgenus Illustrations and measurements wereproduceusinga Isometrus andfivein the subgenusReddyanus, whereasfive Wild M5 stereo(cid:1)microscope with a drawing tube and an others remained unclear classification. In the catalog of ocular micrometer. Measurements followStahnke (1970) thescorpions ofthe world, Fet&Lowe(2000) placed six and are given in micrometer ( mm) . Trichobothrial species in the subgenus Isometrus and all the others ( 16) notations follow Vachon ( 1974) and morphological in the subgenus Reddyanus. In the revision of the genus, terminology mostly follows Vachon ( 1952) and Hjelle Kova r(cid:2)k ( 2003) placed four species in the subgenus (1990). Isometrus and all the others ( 21) in the subgenus Sub(cid:1)cuticular pigmentation maybevery stablewithin Reddyanus. buthid species populations (Louren(cid:1)o, 1983; Louren(cid:1)o & In the revision of the genus Isometrus, Kova r(cid:2)k Cloudsley(cid:1)Thompson, 1996), and therefore useful as a (2003) described four new species, whereas the already taxonomic character in the definition of species. The known species werelimited tocitations, followed by lists material used for the redescription of I. (R.) assamensis of the studied material. This was the case for Isometrus wasfound in the collections of the Mus(cid:1)um National d(cid:1) (Reddyanus) assamensis Oates, 1888. For this species, Historie Naturelle, Paris. It is quite well preserved. The Kova rik ( 2003) examined the original types and new species is based on one specimen entrusted to the designated one male lectotype and five paralectotypes. senior author some years ago.
