Abstract AnewceutorhynchinespeciesofthegenusCoeliodesScHoENHERRis
describedbasedonspecimenscollectedfromMt.Tamdao,NorthVietnam,underthename
ofC 、fe,no,-alis.Photographsofhabitusandillustrationsoftaxonomically important fea-
turesareprovided.Theadultsof thespeciesaretakenontheflowersofCastanop.slssp.,
andtheyseem tobeapollen-feeder,sincepollengrainsare foundin theiralimentary
canals.Thisnewspeciescanbedistinguishedfromothercongenersbytherelativelylarge
body,asmall toothoneachfemur,andthecomplexendophallicsclerites.
Introduction
SixteenspeciesofthegenusCoeliodesScHoENHERRhavebeenknowntooccur in
EastAsia(HUsTAcHE, 1916;KON0,1935;Voss &CHUJ0. 1960;KOROTYAEV,1997;
YosHITAKE, l999,2000).Although fourofthemhavebeenreportedfromContinental
ChinaandTaiwan,norecordofCoeliodesweevilhashithertobeenmade fromtheter-
ritoryofVietnam.
ThroughthecourtesyofMr.YuichiOKUsHIMA,Okayama,wehadanopportunity
toexaminespecimensofCoeliodes,whichhadbeenobtainedfromMt.Tamdao,one
ofthemost famouscollectingsitesinNorthVietnam.Afteracarefulexamination,it
hasbecomeclearthatthisspeciesisnewtoscienceforthereasonofpeculiarityofthe
femoraandmalegenitalorgan,whicharedifferent fromthoseoftheknownmembers
ofthegenus fromEastAsia.
Inthisarticle,wearegoingtodescribethenewCoeliodesspeciesunderthename
ofC feme,・allsasthefirstmemberofthegenusfromVietnam.

Materials and Methods
ThisstudyisbasedonthespecimenscollectedbyMr.YuichiOKusHIMAfromlate
ApriltoearlyMay,1996bynet-sweepingoftheflowersofCastanopsissp atthesum-
mitofMt.Tamdao,NorthVietnam.Methodsusedhere fordescribingspeciesarethe
same as those explained in YosHITAKE (2000). The holotype and a part of the
paratypeswillbepreservedintheEntomologicalLaboratory,FacultyofAgriculture,
KyushuUniversity(ELKU),andtheremainingparatypesareintheprivatecollection
ofH.KoJIMA(PCHK).
Description
CoeliodesfemoralisYosHITAKEetKoJIMA,sp nov.
(Figs.1-3)
Male. Reddishbrown;headandmedianpartofpronotumblackish;elytrawith
slightly darker transversebasalandpremedianbands inentirewidth,whichareob-
scure,longitudinallyconnectedbyadarkareabetweenthefirstandthirdintervals,the
premedianbandbeingarcuateposteriorlyoneachside,sutureandanteriormargin
blackish;meso-,metasternaandbasaltwoventritesandlegsblackish.
Headclothedwithrecumbentbrownishandyellowishgreyscales, foreheadwith
subrecumbentbrownishscalesalonginnermarginofeacheye.Rostrum127timesas
longaspronotum,evenlycurved.Antennaeinsertedbeforethemiddleofrostrum, fu-
niclewithfirstsegmentaslongassecon thirdalittleshorterthansecond, longerthan
fourth,fifthtoseventhsubequa1inlengthtooneanother,eachshorterthanfourth,sev-
enthalmostaslongaswide,cluboblong-ovate,finelypubescentinapical third.
Prothorax129timesaswideaslong,widestnear thebase,slightlynarrowedto-
wardapical third,thenrapidlynarrowedtowardsubapicalconstriction;dorsum reticu-
late-punctured,withashallowsubapicalmediandepression,clothedwithdenserecum-
bentorsubrecumbentyellowish-greysubrectangularscales, whichbecomebrownish
onmedianpart,andbearyellowishovategroundscaleswhichformprescute11arpatch.
Scute11umlanceolate,entirelycoveredwithwhiteovalscales.
Elytra1.08timesaslongaswide,subpara11e1-sidedinbasalhalves, thenalmost
straightlynarrowedtowardsubapicalcalli;dorsumwithwhitishoblonggroundscales,
which form threeindefinitebandsinsubbasal,medianandapical parts; each interval
withamedianrowofyellowishgreyscales,whicharesubrecumbent,subrectangular,
slightlydilateddistad,truncatedattheapexandmuchdarkerintheblackishareathan
thoseinreddisharea;subapicalcalliwithpointedtubercleseachbearingadarkslender
scale.
Pygidium coarsely and sparsely punctate, and thinly clothed with recumbent
whitishscalesandfinerecumbentsetae.
Femoraeachwithasmall tooth, which is concealedby white oval scales, and
clothed with brownish subrecumbent scales and yellowish recumbent scales,

whicharebroacしevidentlydilateddistali, truncatedat theapices; tibiaeclothedwith
scales,whicharesimilar tothoseonfemora,andwithfinehairsalonginteriormargin
andinapicalpart; fronttibiaedilatedoutwardsinapicalfourth,middleandhindtibiae
mucronateattheapices.
Undersideratherdensely clothedwithwhitishoblongscales.Pectoral canalex-
tendingbeyond themiddleofmetasternum.Basal twoventritesdepressed inthemid-
dle;secondventritedenselycoveredwithyellowishscalesatthedepression;fifthven-
tritetransverselydepressedinthemiddle,thinlycoveredwithfinescales,theposterior
marginofthedepressionfringedwithapairofcombsoflongerectsetae,whicharein-
ternallycurvecしandtheposteriorwallofthedepressionwithapairoftuftsof long
setae,whichstretchposteriorlyandcurvedownward.

Genitaliawithaedeagalbodybroa andendophallicscleritescomplexandbroad.
Female. Differs fromthemaleinthe followingpoints: rostrum longer, 1.42
timesaslongaspronotum;antennaeinsertedat themiddleofrostrum; tibiaenotmu-
cronateattheapex;pygidiumdepressed;pectoralcanal reachingtheposteriormargin
ofmetasternum;basaltwoventriteseachwithashallowlongitudinaldepressioninthe
middle;fifthventritewithoutdepression.
Length:2.52-2.77mm.

Distribution. North Vietnam
Etymology. Thespecificnamerefersto thecharacteristic femoraof thisnew
species.
Biologicalnote. AccordingtoYuichiOKUsHIMA(2000,pers.comm),theadults
weretakenontheflowersofCastanopsisspatthesummitofMt.Tamdao,NorthViet-
nam.Pollengrainswerefoundinthealimentarycanalsofseveralspecimens.
Remarks
Thisnewspeciesisdistinctiveenoughnottobeconfusedwithanyotherspecies
fromEastAsiainhavingarelativelylargebody,asmalltoothoneachfemur,andcom-
plexscleritesintheaedeaga1internalsac.Femoral toothisaparticularlyremarkable
featureofthespecies,andnotpresent inanyothermembers fromtheregionunder
consjderation.ThisspeciessomewhatresemblesCama川, anusinhavingsimilarbody
maculation,amedianscalyrowoneachelytralinterval,andahabitvisitingCastanop-
sjsflowers.However,C. femo1・allsconsiderablydiffersfromC amamianus inthe fol-
lowingcharacteristics:eachfemurarmedwithasmalltooth,fronttibiaelackingmucro
attheapexjnthemale,andthemalegenitaliawithabroadaedeagalbody,andb「cad
andcomplexendopha1licsclerites.WehavebeenunabletofindanyotherCoeliodes.
speciesthataremorecloselyrelatedtothepresentnewspeciesthanC amamianus,
butourcontinuingstudiesofmanyundescribedspeciesinEastAsiawillelucidatethe
systematicpositionofthisnewspecies.

要 約
吉武 啓・小島弘昭:北ベトナム・タムダオ山から採集されたアカサルゾウムシ属の1新
種. - 北ベトナムのタムダオ山で採集されたアカサルゾウムシ属Cool,odesの1新種をC
fe,,no・,al,sと命名して記載した. 本種は以下の3点で同属の他種から容易に識別される. l)より
大型である. 2)各腿節に1つの歯状突起を有する. 3)雄交尾器内袋の交尾片が複雑である. 本
種は体背面の斑紋の状態, 上翅各間室に1列の購片を装うこと, およびシイ属の花に来集する
習性で, 琉球列島から記載されたCana,n,a,,,,sに似てぃるが, 雄の前11?節末端に棘状突起を欠
くことや, 交尾器が幅広く, 内袋に複雑で幅広い交尾片を有することから, 両種は別の種群に
属すると考えられる.
