Monographic studies o( Mirabilis section Mimbilis have revealed a heretofore undescribed species^ Mirahilis placement in section Oxybaphoicks russellii. Its lies because of shrubby habit, involucres single-flowered and only slightly its when accrescent in age, perianth campanulate, and anthocarps mucilaginous wet. Within new section Oxybaphoides this species appears to be related to the Mirabilis M. tenmloba S. Wats. - oligantha (Standi.) Macb. group because of the lanceolate which However, involucral lobes are at least as long as or longer than the tube. the clavate, five ridges, and the pubescence of the anthocarp set Af russellii apart . from the other taxa of section Oxybaphoicks. These same anthocarp characters are M. similar to those exhibited by several taxa of the section Oxybaphus hirsuta (i.e., MacM., M.pumila M. M. (Pursh.) (Standi.) Standley, decumbens (Nutt.) Daniels, (A. Gray) Heimerl. Mirabilis not placed in section Oxyba- oblongifolia russellii is phus, however, because the involucral and perianth morphology of this new species firmly establishes close relationship with taxa of section Oxybaphoides. its my named who This species in honor of son Russell Jack has been so is my supportive of graduate studies.
