Etymology.—Theepithetpcniactinareferstothefive,elongate,outwardly projectingantherguiderails,reminiscentotrays. Additionalspecimensexamined:Haiti:MassildolaSellc.gr.C;rete-a-Piquants.Port-au-Prmcc,be- tweenCarrelour-MartinandBoisd'Ormc,c.800m.limestone,17Decmib,HhmanH7402(S!). Matdeapentactina ismostclosely related to Matclcaovatifolia CGriseb.) Woodson(Fig.1,C-E)andbothitsholotypeandparatypehavepreviouslybeen referredtothebetter(seeLiogier1981).Vegetativelythetwospeciesareexceed- inglysimilarandmaynotbeconclusivelydistinguished.However,anumber offloralcharacterstatesdistinctlyseparatethem(seeTable1andkeybelow). MateleaovatifoliaappearsendemictoCubaandM.pentactinatoHispaniola, althoughthesinglespecimenseenfromtheDominicanRepublic(Fucrtcs991, GH)issterileandthuscannotbeconclusivelyreferredtoeitherbasedonmor- phologyAhandwrittennotewiththeholotypeofM.pcntaciina^presumably byEkman,indicatesitwas"seenoccassionalythroughoutsouthernHaiti(at least),althoughseldomwithfirs'"Asimilarnoteontheparatypereads:"i^are, althoughIthinkIhaveseenitsterilebeforeandtakenitlorsomeMctastclma [sic]."MatekapentactinaalsoappearscloselyrelatedtotheHispamolanMatelea constanzcinaJimenez(nom.novforPoicillopsistuerckheimiiSchltr.astheepi- thetisnotavailablemMatelea).Thislatterspecieswasapparentlyknownonly fromthetype(Sto.DomingopropeConstanza,Tuerckheim3466,Jul1910;see alsoLiogier1981)andappearstonolongerbeextant.Theprotologueindicated thatM.constanzanaalsobearsobtusestaminalcoronasegments,butexhibits glabrouswhiteflowers.Thestrikingreticulationsevidentinthepubescent, greenoryellow-floweredM.pentactinawerenotdescribedforM.constanzana. Accordingtothesubgenericclassificationerected byWoodson(1941), MateleapentactinaandM.ovatifolia,aswellasM.tamnifolia(Griseb.)Woodson (endemictoCuba;Fig.1,F),belongtotheentirelyAntilleansubgenusPoicilla. Woodson(1941)didnotincludetheentitynowknownasM.constanzanainhis treatment,butitsaffinitieswouldseemtoplaceitinhissubg.Poicillaaswell AlthoughmanyofWoodson's(1941)subgeneraarelikelyill-conceived(Stevens 1988),subgenusPoicillaismaintainedheremtheabsenceofarigoroustestof Woodson's(1941)concept.Akeytothesubgenusisprovidedbelow.On-going systematicstudyofWest IndianGonolobinaeaimstoimprovegenericand subgenericcircumscriptions. 1522 BRIT.ORG/SIDA21(3) Table1,FloralmorphologicalcharactersdistinguishingMateleapentactlnafromtherelatedM. ovatifolia(Apocynaceae:Asclepiadoideae).
