Mostpassalidspecies(Coleoptera,Passalidae)haveentirelypolishedelytraex- ceptinthepuncturesofelytra1grooves.However,somepassalidspecieshavethelat- eralgroovesoftheelytronmat(GRAVELY,1918).ThegenusLeptaulaxalsoincludes fivespecieshavingmatelytra1grooves: i.e., L anna ZANG, L beccarii KuWERT, L humerosusKUwERT,Lmasay1lki1IwAsEandL.schi11hammeri IWASE(GRAVEIY,1918; IwAsE,1997,1998). DurjngthecourseoftheentomologicalsurveyinSabah,Borneoin1981,thefirst authorcollectedonebeetleofthegenusLeptaula)cfromMamut,nearMt.Kinabalu. Thjsbeetlehadtheelytronwithmat lateralgroovesbutappearedtodiffer fromany knownLeptaula:c)speciessharingthischaracter.Laterwehadopportunitiestoexamine someadditionalspecimensofthisformfromSarawakaswellasfromSabah.Aftera carefulexaminationofthesespecimens,weconcludedthatthisformisnewtoscience. Bodyflat, ratioofprothoraxthicknesstopronotumwidth 0.47,polishedexceptsideofelytron;head,pronotum,prosternum,elytra, tibiaeand tarsiblack;mesosternum,metasternum, abdominalsternitesandcoxaedark reddish- brown Outermarginofmandiblewithastronganglenearbase,almoststraightinmiddle portionanteriortoouterangle,stronglycurvedinwardsindistalportion;anteriorlower toothtriangular,withapexrounde slightly largerthanlowest terminal tooth,theleft oneslightlylargerthantherightone.Labrumpuncturedandhairy,weaklyasymmetri- cal,withleftanteriorangleslightlymoreprominent forwardsthantherightone,ante- riormarginconcave, lateralmarginsweaklydivergedanteriad.Innermarginal tubercle slightlylargerthanouterone,withapexrounded;distancebetweeninnertubercles18 Fig. 1. Pronotum at, rectangular, densely punctured in lateral portion, with anterior angleweaklyprominent forwards,posteriorangleweaklyrounded,mediansulcusdis- tinct, latera1scarshallow.Prosternumsmoothandwitha fewhairsinmiddleportion; posteriorplateofprosternumrugoseand-finelypuncturedincentralportion,polished onposteriorborder.Mesothoracicepisternummat;mesosternumsmoothandimpunc- tateincentralportion,withbroadlateralscar,mat inscar.Centralareaofmetasternum polished, impunctate,withshallowdepressionbetweenmesocoxae;anteriorintermedi- ateareaentirelypuncturedandhairy;posterior intermediateareapuncturedininner andposteriorportions,impunctateinouterportionclosetolateralarea;lateralarearu- gose,welldefined,narrow,slightlywidenedposteriad. Elytron atondorsalsurface,slightlywidenedposteriad,hairyathumerus,mat in seventhtotenthgrooves,withtransversepuncturesinlateralgrooves. Abdominalsternitesentirelypolishedexcept forvisiblethirdand fourthsternites depressedandmatinanteriorportion.
