ThisspeciesisdedicatedtotheCostaRicanbotanist Oerst. inSleumer's (1984)FloraNeotropicaaccountofthefamily LuisJorgePoveda, inrecognitionofhis greatknowledgeofCosta includedatleasttwoelements. ThetypeofH. macrophyllacomes Ricanplants,andinhonourofhismanycontributionstotheknow- fromtheareaalongtheRioSanJuanneartheCostaRica/Nicaragua ledgeandconservationofplantsinMesoamerica. border,andmaterialfromthelowlandAtlanticslopeforestsmatches thetypequitewell(seebelow).Themajorityofspecimensidentified Distribution. Sleumer(1984)lumpedthesetwo acuminata generallydry adarkergreenishbrownthan thoseofH. taxa, stating however 'Specimens with leaves smaller than usual povedae, and the branchlets are not markedly winged. Heisteria occurinPanamaexclusivelyonitsPacificside'.Thepastdecadesof acuminataoccursinlowlandforestsfromtheOsapeninsulainCosta collecting, particularly in Costa Rica, have produced abundant RicatonorthernSouthAmerica,andhasbeenknowninMesoamerica specimensshowingthesetwoentitiesasdistinct.Heisteriapovedae as H. longipes Standi, or H. cyanocarpa Poepp. Material of H. is generally (as recognizedby Burger) aplantofhigherelevation, acuminata from Popaydn in southern Colombia may not match somewhatdrierforests, thanH. macrophylla s.s., whichappearsto materialfromMesoamerica(J0rgensen,pers.comm.),andthecor- beconfinedtothelowlandrainforestsontheAtlanticslopenearthe rect name for the material currently known as H. acuminata in CostaRica/Nicaraguaborder.TheleavesofH.povedaeareusually Mesoamericamaychangeinfuture. (butnotalways)smallerthanthoseofH. macrophylla s.s.,anddry apaleolivegreenwithprominentyellowishvenation.Thestemsof H. povedae are strongly flattened and winged atthe tips, with the Acknowledgements.
