Abstract AnewstaphyIinidbeetleofthegenusCop1-op/1ilushithertounrecorded
fromTaiwanisdescribedandillustratedunderthenameofC.fo,・n1osanus. Ilisclosely
relatedto(、:. impfe's1.1'1sSHARPfromJapan,butisreadilydistinguishedbyitslargersjze,
muchwiderpronotumstronglycon、,ergentbehindthewidestpartanddifferentlyshaped
malegenitalia.
The9enusCopt'oPhi/us LATREILLEisasmallgroupof thesubfamilyOxyteljnae
andisknowntocontainabouttwenty-twospeciesmainlydistributedinthetemperate
regionsof the Northern Hemisphere. However, noneof thespeciesof thisgenus
havebeenrecordedfrom Taiwan.
In thepresent paper I amgoing todescribea newspecies collected from the
temperateforestofthecentralandsouthernmountainousareasinTaiwan.

Bodyelongateandnearlyparallel-sided. Colourblack,shining,withmouthparts,
legs and antennaedark reddish brown, except for fivedistalsegmentsof antennae
somewhat paler. Length6.8-7.5mm.
Headsubquadrate, a littlenarrower thanpronotum (greatest widthof head, jn_
eludingeyes/greatest widthof pronotum=0.80); disc with a pair ofmoderately
deepelliptical impressionsbetween antennal tubercles, and alsowith asmall oneat
themiddlejustbetweentheposteriormarginsofeyes;baseofheadprovidedwitha
shallowtransversesulcusbutnot formingadistinct neck;surfacesparinglycovered
withrather finepunctureswhicharedenserandcoarser on thebaseofhead thanon
fronto-clypea1area; eyes stronglyconvex andprominent, the longitudinaldiameter
slightly longer than postocularareas (longitudinal diameterof eyes/length of post-
ocular areas=1.13); postocular areas straight, slightly converging posteriad. An-

widthtooneanother,eachabout l4timesaslongasbroad,7th to10thsubequal in
bothlengthandwidthtooneanother,about17timesasbroadasproximalsegment,
eachabout aslongaswideandslightlydilatedapicad, apicalmost about 15 timesas
long as broad and distinctlylonger than10th(apicalmost/10th=1.64),subacuminate
atthetip.
Pronotumgentlyconvexmediallyandalittlebroader thanlong(greatestwidth
of pronotum/length of pronotum=1.30),somewhat narrower thanelytra (greatest
widthofpronotum/greatest widthofelytra=0.72),andwidestat anterior third,with
thesidesbroadly rounded in front butslightlysinuateandstronglyconvergent pos-
teriad; lateral partsmoreor less deplanatejust insidelateral margin, each lateral
margin finelybordered,conspicuouslycrenulateat anterior two-thirdsandslightlyso
inposteriorthird,anteriormarginshallowlyemarginate,nearlystraightatthemiddle,
posterior margin gently rounded but subtruncateat themiddle, with a row of very
short, evenlyspacedsetae; anterior angles rectangular though blunt at thecorners,

posterior ones somewhat obtuse; disc with onemedian impression andsix lateral
impressions,anelongate,moderatelydeeponeonthemid-line,alarge,oval,moder-
atelydeeponeoneachsideofmid-linenearbase, averylarge, irregular,moderately
deeponeatmiddleneareachlateralmargin,andasmall,shallowoneoneachsideof
mid-linenearanteriormargin;surfacesparinglybut rathercoarselypunctate. Scutel-
lumsubtriangular,sparinglycoveredwithrathercoarsepunctures.
Elytrasubquadrate,slightly transverse(greatest widthof elytra/greatest length
of elytra=1.09), andconsiderably longer than pronotum (greatest length ofelytra/
greatest lengthofpronotum=1.65); lateralmarginsnearlystraight,graduallydiverging
frombasetobroadlyroundedposteriorangles;eachelytronwithsixrowsofpunc-
turesinimpressedstriae,noneofwhichreachtheposteriormargin;apicalportionof
elytrawithrelativelyshort, irregularlyimpressedstriae;surfaceslightlyrugose,prac-
tically impunctate, but elytral epipleuron bears finesparsepunctures somewhat ir-
regularlyrangedinalongitudinal row.
Abdomenelongate,almostasbroadaselytra,widestatthefourthvisiblesegment,
thengraduallynarrowedanteriadandmorestronglysoposteriad, basalfivetergites
eachshallowlyandtransverselydepressedalongthebase;surfacecoveredwithcoarse-
lyreticulatecoriaceousgroundsculpture,andsparselyscatteredwithsmallpunctures,
alsobearingatransverseseriesoffourdistinctsetiferouspuncturesinposteriormargin
ofeach transversedepressionandtwosetiferouspunctures in frontof theposterior
margin of each tergite; posterior marginofeighthsternite veryshallowlyconcave
medially inmale, whilestronglyangulatemedially in female. Legs relatively stout,
protarsisimpleinboth
sexes.
Male genital organ trilobed and almost symmetrical, moderately sclerotized.
Basal piece largeand oval. Median lobe,viewedventrally,broadandslightly nar_

rowed apicad and suddenly truncated at apex, though distinctly pointed ventrad
like a bird's beak in profile. Parameresmoderately longandbroad, remarkably
longerthanmedianlobe,spatulate,eachslightlytwistedandexpandedinwardsinthe
apicalpart.

Notes. The present newspecies resemblesC. ImpressusSHARPfrom Japan in
generalappearance,butcanbereadilydistinguishedfromthelatterbythefollowing
characteristics:bodylargerandbroader,muchwiderthanpronotum,withsidemargins
behind thewidest partstrongly convergent andslightlysinuateposteriad, shallower
impressedpunctatestriaeonelytraanddifferentconfigurationofmalegenitalorgan.
Thepair of thespecimensfromSungchuankangwerecollectedfromundercom-
parativelyfreshdeadbodyofasmallmammal, togetherwithmanyspecimensofthe
Catopidae. The two female specimens from Kuanshan Yakou were found from
heaps of fallen leaves accumulated at the edge of the water of a mountain
narrow
stream.
要 約
業田泰利: 台湾産 Coprophilusの1新種. - Coprophilus 属はセスジハネカクシ亜科 0xyte-
linac の小さい属で, 既知の22種は主として温' に分布している. そのうちll本からは3種, 中国
からは1種, ネパール, 力シミール, ヒマラヤ, インドなどからは4種, 残りの14種はシベリア,
ョーロツパなどから記録されている.
'i-回, 台湾の南投県松泉11,11 (標高2,400m) と台東県関山??,i- (標高2、500m)から採集された有1
が新種と判定されたので, Coprophilusformosanusと命名記載した. 本種は, l'l本産のC.impressus
SHARPキノカワハネカクシに体形, 色彩ともに似ているが, より大型で幅広, 前胸背板は幅広で,側
, 縁は最大幅部後方で末端に向かって強く狭まり, 上翅の点刻'ｿが;浅く 雄 交尾器の形状が異なってい
る, などの点で容易に識別できる.
