Spinellr ABSTRACT: Atrichopogon carpintemi, n. sp. from the Argentinian province of Formosa is de- scribedand illustratedfrommaleandfemalespecimenscollectedwithalighttrap.Thespecies,eas- ilyrecognizedbythecontrastingcolorationbetweenthethoraxandabdomen, lackssecondarysexu- al dimorphism. It iscomparedwiththecongeners,A. utricularisMacfieandA. homofacies Spinelli. KEYWORDS: Atrichopogon, newspecies, Diptera,Ceratopogonidae,northernArgentina Atrichopogon Kieffer, a worldwide genus, is one ofthe most speciose in the family Ceratopogonidae, only surpassed in the Neotropics by Culicoides Latreille andForcipomyia Meigen. Borkent and Spinelli (2000), in their catalog ofthe New World ceratopogonids south ofthe United States ofAmerica, listed 75 species for the region, and there has been only one species subsequently described,Atrichopogon mexicanus Huerta (2001). Ofthese species, the follow- ing eleven are known to occur inArgentina:A. albinensis Ingram and Macfie,A. balseiroi Spinelli, A. casali Cavalieri and Chiossone,A. delpontei Cavalieri and Chiossone,A. domizii Spinelli,A. homofacies Spinelli,A. mendozae Ingram and Macfie, A. obfuscatus Ingram and Macfie, A. obnubilus Ingram and Macfie, A. A seudoobfuscatus Spinelli and talarum Spinelli (Spinelli, 1998). The feeding habits of the female adults are poorly known. Some suck haemolymph from blister beetles (Wirth, 1956a, b), while others are pollinivo- rous orappeartobeautogenous. Larvae are aquatic orsemiaquatic andare found on the surface ofmud, wet wood, or stones, feeding on diatoms and other algae (de Meillon and Wirth, 1991). Species ofAtrichopogon form a fairly uniform group as faras theiradultmor- phology is concerned (Debenham, 1973), and very similar species can be recog- nizedasadults onlybythemalegenitalic characters. However, pigmentationpat- terns appear to be very important in the recognition ofmany species in Costa Rica (Borkent, pers. comm.). Through the courtesy ofJorge Williams from the Museo de La Plata, Argen- tina, we obtained specimens ofa very distinctive species ofAtrichopogon col- lected with a light trap in the Argentinian province ofFormosa, which is here described as a new species. Types of the new species are deposited in the collection of the Division of Entomology, Museo de la Plata, Argentina (MLPA). Terms for structures follow those used in the Manual of Nearctic Diptera (McAlpine et al., 1981), and for special terms applying to Atrichopogon see Wirth (1994). Terms forwing veins follow the system ofthe Manual ofNearctic Diptera, with modifications proposed by Szadziewski (1996). NEW SPECIES Atrichopogon carpinteroi, (Figs. 1-9) Diagnosis. A medium-size species ofAtrichopogon with no secondary sexu- al dimorphism; eightproximal flagellomereswhitish, distal fivedarkbrown; tho- rax with scutum, scutellum, postscutellum, paratergite, propleuron and anepi- sternum dark brown, rest ofpleura and legs pale yellowish; abdomen pale yel- lowish, segment 8-10 of female slightly darker; spermatheca large, ovoid with short neck, lightly sclerotized; parameres apparently missing; aedeagus triangu- lar, tapering to cap-like apex, basal arch very low. Descriptionofmale.Head.Vertex,fronsdarkbrown;clypeusbrown;proboscispale.Ommatidia withinterfacetspicules,narrowlyabuttingmedially.Antenna(Fig. 1)withflagellomeres 1-8whitish, bottle-shaped, flagellomeres 9-13 elongated, dark brown, proportions as shown in Fig. 1, flagello- mere 13 withbasallyconstrictednipple; flagellomereswith sensillaechaeticaandtrichodea,without plumesetae(Fig.2);AR 1.20. Maxillarypalpus(Fig. 3)pale,darkishatapex;thirdsegmentslender, withshallowsensorypitnearmidlength;segments4,5closelyappressed;segment5conical-shaped; PR3.00. Proboscisshort, length0.240mm;P/Hratio 1.07. Thorax.Scutum,scutellum,postscutellum,paratergite,propleuron,anepistemumdarkbrown;rest ofpleurapaleyellowish; scutumwith all setae indarkpits; withlateral suture. Paratergitewith one stoutseta.Legsuniformlyyellowish;hindtibialspurshort,hindtibialcombwith7spines;prothoracic TR2.91,mesothoracicTR3.08,metathoracicTR2.28;claws(Fig.4)curved,moderatelystout,bifid at tip; empodia present. Wing (Fig. 5) plain, without pattern ofpigmented membrane; with few macrotrichiae in cell r3, one or two in cell ml; first radial cell reduced, second radial cell well formed, long, narrow; cubital fork proximal to level ofcostal apex; wing length 0.98 mm; breadth 0.36mm;CR0.69.Halterwhitish. Abdomen. Tergites uniformly pale yellowish. Sternites more or less similarly rectangularly shaped.Genitalia(Fig. 6): Segment9withtergitemoderatelyelongate,extendingtolevelofapexof gonocoxite;sternite9narrow,withsinglerowofsetae.Gonocoxitepaleyellowish,moderatelystout, 1.6timeslongerthangreatestbreadth;gonostylus0.75aslongasgonocoxite,slender,nearlystraight, tippointed. Parameresapparentlymissing.Aedeagustriangular,stout,lightlysclerotized,taperingto cap-liketip(Fig.7);basalarmsshort,recurved;basalarchverylow,extendingto 1/10oftotallength. Cercussmall, lobe-like, notprojectingbeyondapexoftergite9. Female.As formale, only with genital differences;AR 1.27 (1.26-1.28, n = 2); PR 2.95 (2.90- 31..0104,, nn == 22));mpmro;bobsrceiasdtlhen0g.t4h40(.03.043m-m0.;46,P/nH=ra2t)iom1m.;33C(R1.205.-710.4(10,.6n9-=0.27)1;,wnin=g2l);enpgrtohth1o.r1a4ci(c1.1T3R- 2.96(2.92-3.00, n = 2), mesothoracicTR 3.21 (3.17-3.25, n=2), metathoracicTR2.43 (2.35-2.50, n=2). Tergites 1-7 paleyellowish, 8-10 slightlydarker. Spennatheca large, ovoidwith short neck, mm lightlysclerotized,measuring0.240by0.152 (Fig. 8). Sternite8withoutelongate,curvedsetae. Segments 8-10asshown in Fig. 9. Cercuspale. Distribution.Atrichopogoncarpinteroin. sp. isknownonly from thetype locality. Material Examined. Holotype male, allotype female, Argentina, Formosa prov., Estancia La Marcela, 35 km E El Colorado, 27/28-VII-2003, J. Scalebars =0.05 mm. Taxonomic Discussion. Males and females were associated by their similar pigmentation pattern and were collected at the same locality and date. The A female ofthis new species resembles the female of utricularis Macfie from CostaRicabyvirtueofthe large,ovoid, lightlysclerotizedspermathecawith nar- row duct and by the few macrotrichia at the wing tip, but differs by having bifid Vol. 114. May&June2003 159 tarsal claws (simple in utricularis} and by several differences in pigmentation patterns, e.g., proximal eight flagellomeres pale (flagellum nearly entirely dark brown in utricularis), abdomen pale yellowish (very dark brown in utricularis} and legs pale yellowish (yellowish brown in utricularis}. Atrichopogon homofacies Spinelli from Argentina and A. carpinteroi both lack secondary sexual differences. However, the abdomen ofA. homofacies is pale brown, so that the pigmentation ofthorax and abdomen does not contrast, the flagellum is entirelydark brown andonlythe lastthree flagellomeresofmale flagellum are elongated. In addition,A. homofacies differs in the following gen- ital characters: Y-shaped female genital sclerotization; parameres present, fused, and with a blunt tip; aedeagus Y-shaped with higher basal arch and deeply pig- mented, stout, pilose gonostylus. Etymology. The species is named after Diego L. Carpintero from the Museo de La Plata, in recognition ofhis excellent work recognizing ceratopogonids in alcohol preserved light traps samples.
