Introduction
FourspeciesofNeseuthiaareknowntooccurinJapan(JALOSZYNSKI&HOSHINA,
2003).TheyinhabittheYaeyamaIsis.(OkinawaProf.),TokunoshimaIs.(Ka9oshima
prof.),andtheTsushimaIsis.(NagasakiPref).Thisdistributionsuggestedthatmem-
bersofNeseuthiamightalsooccurinotherislandsbetweentheSakishimaArchipel-
agoandKyushu.Indeed,severalindividualsofNeseuthiahaverecentlybeencollected
jnOkjnawaIsland. Theybelongto twoeasilydistinguishablespecies. 0neSpecies
clearlydjffersfromallothermembersofthegenusbytheuniqueshapeoftheaede-

ThegenusNeseuthiabelongstothetribeCephenniiniwithinthesubfamilyScyd-
maeninae. Detailed generic characteristics were given and discussed recently by
JALoszYNsKl andHosHINA(2003). MembersofNeseuthiacanberecognizedonthe
basisofverysmall,relativelyslender,elongateandusuallyveryconvexbodywithwell
marked divisionbetweenpronotumandelytra, which is an unusual shape in the
Cephenniini.0therkeycharactersare:apexofpygidiumusuallyvisibleindorsalview;
procoxaeseparatedbynarrowpresternalprocess;mandibleswithsubquadrate,broad
baseandsubtriangularapicalpart;maxillarypalpomereIVveryshortandbroad;an-
tennaeslender,withvariouslyseparatedclubcomposedoftwoorthreeantennomeres;
pronotumwithbasalpitsandsometimestransverseand/or1ongitudinalgroove;males
oftenhavepeculiargrooves,tuberclesorexpansionsonfronsorvertex.
TheidentificationkeytoJapanesespeciesofNeseuthiagivenbyJALoszYNsKland
HOSHINA(2003)mustbemodifiedtoincludethenewtaxa:

Male(Fig.1). Bodysmall,moderatelyslenderandconvex,0.91mminlength,
reddish-brown,legsandpalpiminimallylighter,setationyellowish.
Headdistinctlybroader thanlong,widestat large,convexandcoarsely faceted
eyes, length0.12mm,width0.25mm.Vertex trapezoidal,slightlynarrowinganteri-
orly,regularlyconvex,withapairoftuberclesassmallassingleommatidium,located
near internal marginof eacheye; frons trapezoidal,minimally concave, relatively
steeply loweringanteriorly; instrictlydorsal viewapicalmarginofclypeusslightly
emarginate;supraantenna1tuberclesindistinct.Punctationofheadveryfineandsparse;
setationsparseandveryshort,hardlynoticeable,nearlyrecumbent.Antenna0.42mm

thanVIII,antennalclubcomposedofantennomeresX-XI,whicharelargeandslightly
attened dorso-ventrally. Setation of antenna composed of several long, curved
suberectsetaeoninternalsurfaceofantennomereI,sparse,straightsuberectsetaeon
remainingantennomeres(slightlylongeronIX-XI), anddensetransversesetal rings
onlasttwosegments.
Pronotumbroaderthanwide,regularlyconvex,widestnearanteriorthir(1,length
0.29mm,maximumwidth0.36mm,widthatbase0.32mm.Anteriormarginbroadly,
shallowlyemarginate,anterioranglesslightlyprotruding,blunt(instrictlydorsalview
anterioremarginationandanglesnot visible); lateralmarginswithsharpedge,dis-
tinctlyserrate narrowingposteriorlytowardminimallyobtusehindangles;inposte-
riorhalfnarrowlateralmarginisdelimitedfromdiscbynarrowimpression.Basemin_
imally emarginate in lateral thir withadditional,shallowmedianemarginationas
wideasscutellum,andwithtwopairsoflatero-basa1foveaeseparatedinmiddleby
nearlythirdofwidthofbase.Pronota1punctationbarelyvisible,veryfineandsparse,
additionalsparse,largerpuncturesaredistributedalonglateralmargins;setationmod-
erately dense, relatively short, onlyslightly suberect, lateral margins bear slightly
longersetaeandadditionallytwopairsoflong,erectsetaeat thewidestplaceandat
hindangles,onemorepairofsimilarlylong,posteriorly-directedsetaeissituatedbe-
tweeninternalbasal foveae.
Elytraoval, very convex, widestnearmiddle, length0.5mm,combinedwidth
0.45mm,elytra1index(EI;length/combinedwidth)1.11.Humeraldenticleverysmall;
basalelytra1foveasmall,locatedinmiddlebetweenhumerusandscutellum,inbroa
subtrianguIar impression, connected with shallow groove running posteriorly and
slightlyexternallyinanterior fourthofeachelytron,lateralareaadjacenttogroovedis-
tinctly raised; apicesofelytraseparately rounded. Scutellum large, triangular with
slightlyconvexsidesandlarge,shallowcircular impressioninmiddle.Punctation of
elytramoderately dense,composedof punctures larger thanonpronotum;setation
similartothatonpronotum,additionallyeachelytronwiththreelong,curvedlateral
setaelocatednearhumerus, inmiddleandslightly anterior toposterior third. Hind
wingswelldeveloped,abouttwiceaslongaselytra.
Legsrelativelylongandslender,all femoraslightly,graduallyclavate,pro-and
metatibiaenearlystraight,mesotibiaeslightlyrecurved,tarsomereIlongerthaneachof
subequa1 II-I tarsomereV nearlyas longasIII-IV together, tarsusnotnarrowing
distally.
Aedeagus(Fig 2A-C)relativelysmall,0.21mminlength,elongate,withdistinct
basalemargination,welldelimite asymmetricalapicallobeandslightlyasymmetrical
parameresnotexceedingapexofaedeagus.Dorsalwallofmedianlobewithcircular
foramen;endophalIuswithsymmetrical,relativelylightlysclerotizedstructures.
Female. Externallydiffersfrommaleonlyinsmoothvertex,withouttubercles.

Etymology. Thetypeseriesofthissubspecieshasbeencollectedinalocality
verydistant fromtheterratypIcaofN nonu1l-a1no1mua1. Thisfact isunderlinedby
derivingthenewsubspecificname fromtheLatinword“disJunctus”,meaning“sepa-
rate,distant,remote”.
Remarks. Diagnosticcharactersofthissubspeciesaretheshapeoftubercleson
vertexand fronsandthedesignoftheendopha11us.Thesefeaturescanbeusedfordis-
tinguishingthenewlydescribedtaxon fromthenominotypicalsubspecies.Moreover,
knownpopulationsofthetwosubspeciesareconfinedtotheSakishimaArchipelago
(Nnnomula1),andOkinawaIs. (Nndisfuncta),whichissituatedover400kmtothe
north-east fromthe former.

要 約
P.JA-szYNsKI・新井志保・新井浩二:沖縄島から発見されたNeseuthia属 (コウチュウ目コ
ケムシ科) の1新種および1新亜種の記載. - 日本産Neseuthia属はJALoszYNsKl &HosHINA
(2003)によって4新種が記載されている. その産地は八重山諸島, 徳之島, 対馬であり, それ
らの島の間にある地域から発見されることが予想されていた. 昨年第2, 第3著者らが沖縄島
で行った調査により複数の個体が得られ, 以下の1種1亜種を記載した.
NokinawanaJAi,oszYNsK1,S.ARAletK.ARAlオキナワハラビロコケムシ
日本産の他の4種とはオス交尾器の形態から容易に区別できる.
N nomulaidisjunctaJALOSzYNsKl,S.ARAletK.ARAl
石垣島・西表島から記載されたNnomu,・alJALoszYNsKletHosHINAに非常によく似てぃるが,
前頭や頭頂の構造, 内袋の骨片にわずかながら違いが見られる.
さらにこれらの種を含めた日本産Neseuthia属の検索表を付した.
