Abstract Anewpatrobinecarabidbeetleisdescribedfromthecentralmountains
ofKyushu,Japan,underthenameofApat1・obuso/1tsukai. It isrelated to A hikosa'1us
(HABU).butdiffersfromitmainlyinthestructureofmalegenitalia.
Tenyearsago, anapterouspatrobinecarabidbeetlewasobtainedbyMr. lsao
OHTsuKAonMt.Yamaingiri incentral Kyushu,Japan,andwassubmittedtomefor
identification. lwas,however, unableat that timetodeterminewithconfidenceits
truesystematicposition. Veryfortunately, Imadeacollectingtriptothemountain
wjth him, and was able to obtain many additional specimens of thesamespecies.
An examination of malegenital organ, especially aedeaga1structure, proved that
thoughcloselyrelatedto Apat1・obus/1ikosanus(HABU)(1953, p 47), it was no doubt
new toscience. Inthispaper,IamgoingtodescribeitunderthenameofA.ohtsukal.

nate; inner sacarmed with twocopulatorypiecesand apatch ofsclerotized teeth;
apical copulatory piece (ac) heavilysclerotized, elongateandgently curved, lying
atthedorsalposition,andwithpointedapex;proximalcopulatorypiece(pc)elongate
and twisted from leftdorso-proxima1torightapico-ventra1,andwiththeapicalpart
wide and lamellar; a teeth patch elongateand lying near apical copulatory piece;

Notes. It ispossiblethat thespeciesrecordedby HABU(1960)under thename
of Pat''obtls (Apatrobus) /1ikosantls fromShiibaactuallybelongsto thisnewspecies.
Judging from his accounts and illustrations, his observation concerning aedeaga1
structureseemsunsatisfactory,sothathisrecordmaybebasedonmisidentification.
This new species is very closely allied to A./1ikosanus. It is, however, distjn_
guished fromitbythesmaller bodyandthedifferentlyshapedpronotum. Theonly
definitedifferencesbetweenthetwoareintheshapeofaedeaga1apicalpartandinthe
shapeof theproximalcopulatorypiece: inA.o/1tsuka1,apexofaedeaguswithout a
denticleatthemidd、e;proximalcopulatorypieceelongateandtwisted;inAhlk;osanus,
apexofaedeaguswithadenticleatthemiddle;proximalcopulatorypiecespatulateand
twisted(cf.HABU,1960,p 9, fig 7,MORITA,1986,p.146).
ThisnewpatrobinecarabidisdedicatedtoMr.IsaoOHTsuKA,thediscovererof
thebeetle.

atHohuanchi -Sungchuangkang,about2,500minaltitude,NantouProf., Taiwan. Later,
SHIMOMURAandSAITo(1979) reported that thisspecies was collected at Pilu-shenmu,
HualienProf., Taiwan, without the collecting date. YuandNARA(1988)alsorecorded
a、femalespecimen (mostprobablyamalejudgedfromplate3,no 5of their paper)ofthjs
speciescollectedat thesame locality. Thealtitudeof thetwo localitiesisabout2,200_
2,500mandthesespecimenswerecollected「romMaytoJune. However, l co11ectedthjs
species inMarchnear SsuIing, ca 900m in altitude, TaoyuanPref., northern Tajwan.
