Elytra,Tokyo,36(2):267-273,November22,2008 A NewKunbir (Coleoptera,Cerambycidae) from the IslandofBail, Indonesia YaheitaYoKoI Beerenkothen33,40882Ratingen,Germany and TatsuyaNnsATo BioindicatorCo.,Ltd., Yarai-cho126,Shinjuku,Tokyo,162-0805Japan Abstract A new speciesof thecerambycidgenusKunbir LAMEEREisde- scribedasthefirstrepresentativeofthegenusfromBail IslandofIndonesia. Ithas some resemblance to K atriapicatis GREssITT et RoNDoN from Laos, butcan be distinguishedbythedifferentcolour,elytra1punctation,structureofantenna,relative lengthof hind femur, and themalegenitalorgan. Morethan20speciesofthegenusKunbirLAMEEREhavebeenrecordedsofar from theOrientalRegion. Untilrecently, thedistributionofKunbirspecieswasconsideredto be confined to its northwestern half, basically the continental part includingSouth China, Indochina, IndianSubcontinent, andsuch peripheral islands as Taiwan and Ceylon. From the extensive region further south, stretching eastwards from the Malayan Peninsula to theSunda Islands, the regioncalled“Malayana” by PASCOE, therewasnorecordofKunbirspecies. ItwasassumedthatthegenusKunbir isabsent inMalayanaandthereforeitsdistributionismuchmorerestrictedgeographicallythan thesistergenusMerionoeda, whichexistsnotonlyinthewholeOrientalRegionbutalso intheAustralianRegion. WiththedescriptionofK.1ombokianaNIIsAToet YoKoI (2008), wehaveshown that thegenusdoesoccurinMalayanaandrathersurprisingly in Lombok Island, east ofWallace'stinein theAustralianRegion. In the following lines, wewill describeKunbir ikuo1sp nov from Bail Island of IndonesiaasasecondrepresentativeofthegenusinMalayana, andatthesametimethe first one fromwest ofWallace'stine. OftheknownKunblrspecies, it ismostclosely similar to K atriclpicalisGREssITTetRoNDoNfromLaos. Wewouldliketothank Mr.TheodoreL.CHILDERs forhiscritical readingof the draft of thispaper. Theabbreviationsusedin theratiosof measurement arealready explained inourpreviouspapers(YoKoI &NIIsATo,2007,2008). 268 YaheitaYoKoIandTatsuyaNllsATo Kunbir ikuoiSD nov (Figs. l-5) Bodylength (fromapicalmarginofclypeustoelytra1apices)6.1mm. Kunbirfo(rtico11isHoLzscHUHfromThailandalsohascertainresemblancetothe newspecies, though it hasshorter antennae. It is interesting tonotethat Kunbir lkuo1sp nov. is found in Bail Island in the immediateneighborhoodof Lombok IslandwhereK.1ombokiana has recentlybeen recorded. ThusK. ikuoisp nov.istheeasternmost representativeof thegenusinthe OrientalRegion,whileK.1ombokianaistheonlyandwesternmost representativeinthe AustralianRegion, thoughthetwospeciesonlymoderatelyresembleeachother. Inany event, both thespeciesoccur far from thehithertoknowndistributional rangeofthe genusKunblr in theimmediateneighborhoodofeachotheracrosstheLombokStraits, bridgingWallace'stine. A questionarisesastowhetherK. ikuoisp and K. 1ombokiana are isolated nov insularspeciesorthegenusKunbirisactuallymorewidelyandcontinuouslydistributed intheOrientalandAustralianRegionsthanpreviouslyassumed, asinthecaseofthe sister genus Merionoeda. Toanswer the question, weneed toexploit andstudy the Kunbir faunaoftheregionmoreextensively. TheholotypemalewascollectedbyY.YoKoInearavirgin forest inwesternBail, 500-600m in altitude. Thecollection at a light wasprobablyaccidental, as Kunbir speciesaregenerallynotattracted tolight. 272 YaheitaYoKoIandTatsuyaNIIsATo Corrections Inrecentpapers,wemadetwoerrorsinwritingtheabbreviationandthedescrip- tion as follows. 1) IntheJapaneseJournalofSystematicEntomology,13,p.187,line3fromthe bottom:insert“FA-apicalwidthoffrons”before“FB- basalwidthof frons”. 2) IntheElytra,36,p 4,line2fromthebottom: for“wider thanthemaximum width”, read“shorter thanthemaximumwidth”. Kunbirikuoisp nov.
