Earlyinthesummerofthisyear,lhadanopportunitytomakeaninvestigationof thecoleopteranfaunaoftheDabaShanMountainsthatstretchfromwesttoeastonthe bordersofShaanxi andSichuanProvincesandextendeastwards intothe westernmost partofHubeionthenorthernsideoftheYangziJiangRiver.CollaboratedwithMasa- takaSAT0, Ivisitedvariousplacesincludingthirteenlimestonecavesoneithersideof themountainrange,andcollectedafairnumberoftrechinebeetles,amongwhichwere foundtwospecimensapparentlybelongingtotheAgonotrechusseries.Theylooklike Doハt ,eotrec/1usylnae fromwesternYunnaninparticular,butareevidently different fromitinsomecriticalpoints.0neofthemwasfoundnearthewesternmostpartofthe mountainrange,andtheotherattheeasternmostpartabout430kmapart fromthecol- lectingsiteoftheformer. Thoughsimilar toeachotherat firstsight, thetwospecimens aredifferent in manydetailsofexternalmorphology,andbesides,incrediblydifferinconformationof themalegenitalia. Thegenitalic differencealmostattainstothelevel thatcouldbe consideredasthatofgenericimportance.Atthepresentmoment,however, Iprefer to regardthemasbelongingtothesamegenusinviewoftheclosesimilarityindiagnos- tic featuresofexternalmorphology,andamgoingtoerect forthemanewgenustobe calIedDabatrec1/us.Similardiscrepancybetweenexternalandgenitalicpeculiaritiesis alsoknown inthegenusDeuveot1-echusS. UENo(1995, p 99,andalso1996)and the genusLuzonotrec/1usS.UENo(1979,p 26,andalso1987),andcanberegardedasa uniquediversificationexhibitedbythemembersoftheAgo,7ot1-coitusseriesanditsde- rivatives. 266 Shun-lobiUENo Theseinterestingnewtrechineswillbedescribedinthepresentpaperunderthe names Dabatrechus eccentrlcus and D hyg1ophilus, the former from Mt. Guangwu Shanlyingat theSichuansideofthewesternmostpartoftheDabaShanMountains andthelatterfromtheYidaoXiaValleyattheeasternmostpartofthesamemountains inwesternHubei. Theabbreviationsusedhereinarethesameasthoseexplainedin previouspapersofmine. Beforegoinginto furtherdetails, Iwishtoexpressmyheartfelt thankstoDr. MasatakaSAT0 forhiscollaborationinthefief andtoMr.FANTingoftheAcademia Sinicaforhisunfailinghelptoourinvestigations. GenusDabatrechusS.UENo nov Typespecies: Dabatrechuseccent1・iousS.UENo,spnov. BelongingtotheAgonotrechusseriesandrelatedtoDeuveotrechusS.UENofrom northwestern Yunnan, but different from it in thebidentate right mandible, fused labium,andtheabsenceofsupernumerarydorsalporesonthethirdelytra1stria. Medium-sizedtrechineswithrelativelyshortbroadbodyeitherconstrictedbe- tweenprothoraxandhindbody(D hyg1ophilus)ornot;dorsalsurfaceglabrousand polished,ventereitherglabrous(」Deccentrlcus)orprovidedwithseveralshorthairson themedianpartofeachsternite(D hygroph11us);microsculptureeithercompletelyab- sent(D hygrophilus)orpresentonlyinmarginalareasofpronotumasfinetransverse lines(Deccentrlcus);colourdarkbrownwithpalerpalpiandlegs;innerwingsatro- phied. Headtransverse,withdeepentirefrontal furrowsstronglyarcuateorevensuban- gulateatmiddleandwidelydivergent in frontandbehind; twopairofsupraorbital porespresentonlinessubpara11e1toeachotherorslightlydivergentposteriad,theante- riorpairfoveolateandlyingneartotheposteriorpair;eyesfairlylargeandconvexto- getherwithgenae,eitherclearlyfaceted(Deccentricus)ornot,genaeeitherglabrous (Dhygrophilus)orwithafewvestigialhairs(D eccentricus); labrumtransverseand dilatedanteria withtheapicalmargindeeplyandevenlyemarginate.Mandiblesstout thoughacuteattheincurvedapicalportions,rightmandiblebidentate,devoidofpre- molar tooth. Labium fusedthoughvestigeoflabialsutureisrecognizable;mentum longitudinallydepressedoneachside,mentaltoothbroad,eithertruncatedorrounded atthetip;submentumsexsetose;ligulaporrectatthemiddle,octosetoseasusual;para- glossaethinandarcuate,extendingmuchbeyondligula; labialpalpus fairlyslender, penultimate palpomere gradually dilated towards apex and quadrisetose, apical palpomereslightly longer than thepenultimate. Maxillaeshort,stout and arcuate, 1aciniawithseveralstoutspinesandhairsontheinnermargin;maxillarypalpuswith shortpenultimatepalpomerewhichiswidelydilatedtowardsapexandbearsvestiges ofafewminutehairs,apicalpalpomereelongatedsubconica1,about13timesaslong asthepenultimate.Antennaesubfiliform,notreachingthemiddleofelytra. Pronotumsubcordateandconvex,eithergraduallynarrowedposteriad(D eccen- NewTrechincBeetles、fromtheDabaShanMountains 267 tricus)orratherstronglycontractedatthebase(Dhyg1,〔)ph11us),whichiseitherbriefly or vestigially subpedunculate; sides completely bordered, more or less strongly roundedinfront,eitherstraight(Deccentricus)orbrieflysinuatejustbeforehindan- gles(Dhyg1-〔)phihls),withtwopairofmarginalsetae,ofwhichtheanteriorpair isin- sertedataboutoralittlebeforethewidestpartandtheposterioronealmostonhind angles; frontanglescompletelyroundedoff,hindangleseitherobtuse(Deccent1-1cus) orsubrectangular(Dhyg1,oph11us);nopostangularcarinae.Scutellumsmall. Elytraovate,evidentlywider thanforebody,withdistinctbutroundedshoulders; dorsumconvex;sidesbordered,prehumera1bordereithercompletetobasalpeduncle (Deccentrlcus)ordiminishingantero-internallythoughreachingthesiteofthebase ofstria5;striaevanishedwiththeexceptionofinnertwoorthreeandapicalhalfof8, theformerofwhich(atleastthesuturalone)arecoarselypunctateorcrenulateonthe disc;scutellarstrictodistinct,apicalstriolealsodistinct thoughshortand freeatthe anteriorend;oneor twosetiferousdorsalporespresentonor onthesiteofstria3, none on stria 5; preapica1 pore either present (D. eccent1・Ious) or absent (D hyg1,oph11us);twoapicalporespresentasusual;marginalumbilicateporesregular, four poresofthehumeralsetrangedalmostequidistantly. Ventral surfacesmooth,either glabrousorbearingseveral shorthairs oneach sternitebetweenapairofparamediansetae;analsternitebisetosein(S.Legsofmoder- atelength;protibiaepubescentthoughratherminutelyontheanterior face,eithersim- ple(D hygrophilus)or vestigiallygroovedontheexternal face(D eccentricus); tarsi thin; in , twoproximal tarsomeresofeachprotarsusmoreor lessdilated, inwardly producedordenticulateatapices,andfurnishedbeneathwithadhesiveappendages. Malegenitaliasurprisinglyvariableinconformationaccordingtospecies.Aede- agusgutter-like,widelymembraneousondorsum frombasetoapical lobe,withthe basalpartopenonbothdorsalandventral sides,sometimesformingakindofring, thoughthebasalextremityiscompletelyclosedandbearsasagittalaileron;apicallobe eitherveryshort(Decce11tricus)orlongandnarrow(Dhyg1-ophilus);innersacscaly at theapicalpartandbearingone(D. り/ ,gl,oph11us)or two(Deccent1・Ious)copulatory pieces,spoon-likeandhyalineinthe former,palp-likeandheavilysclerotizedinthe latter.Stylesnarrowat theapicalparts, leftstyleobviouslylongerthantherightand bearingreducedventralapophysis,eachprovidedwithfour,relativelyshortsetaeatthe apex. Range. Known so far only from the Daba Shan Mountains in West-central China. Notes. ThoughsimilarinmanyrespectstoDeuveotrechus,thisnew genusmay notbedirectlyrelatedtoitinviewoftheradicaldifferenceinsomefundamental fea- tures,and theoverallsimilaritybetween thetwogeneramayhavebeenbroughtabout throughparallelevolution. 0ntheotherhan similarunusualdivergenceofgenitalic conformation is also known in Deuveotrechus. Indescribing Deu、l,eotrechusylnae (UENo,1996,p.14,figs.1-3) fromtheDiancangShanMountainsinwesternYunnan, Inoticedthatthemalegenitaliaofthenewspecieswerestrikinglydifferent fromthose 268 Shun-lchiUltNo ofthetypespecies,Dyuae(DEuvE,1992,p.171,figs.1,12;UENo,1995,p.100,figs. 4-5),andthat thepeculiarmodificationofmalegenitaliashownby D yinaewasto someextentsimilar tothatshownbythebontocgroupofthegenusLuzonotrechus, whichmighthavearemoterelationshiptothegeneraoftheAgonotrechusseries.The discoveryofDabatrechusseemstogiveanotherexampleofunusualdiversification, suggestingthatthegenitalicdivergencemaynotbeexceptional intheAgonotrechus series. Aswillbedescribedundertheheadingsofthenewspecies,theknownmembers ofDabatrechusareunusuallyhygrophilousandarefoundincoexistencewithbembidi- ines. Thisisquiteexceptional for theapterousmembersoftheAgonotrechusseries, mostofwhichareeitherhumico1ous,muscico1ousorsaproxy1ophi1ous. DabatrechuseccentricusS.UENo,sp nov (Figs.1-3) Length: 4.10mm(fromapicalmarginofclypeustoapicesofelytra). Bodyshort andbroad, glabrousandpolishedonbothdorsumand venter;mi- crosculpturemostlyvanishedbutperceptibleasfinetransverselinesinmarginalareas ofpronotumand insmall fragmentary portions along frontal furrows. Colour dark brown,shiny,lighter inbasalhalvesofelytra1disc,whichisweakly iridescent;palpi andlegslightyellowishbrown. Headwide,depressedabove,withdeepfrontal furrowswhicharenotangulateat middleandmorewidelydivergentposteriadthananteriad;supraorbital areasgently convex, with twopair ofsupraorbitalpores onlinessubpara11e1toeachother and closely locatedoneafter theother,theanteriorpair beinglocatedslightlybehindthe mid-eyelevel;eyesmoderatelyconvexanddistinctly faceted;genaeobliqueandonly slightlyconvex,two-thirdsaslongaseyes,andpracticallyglabrousthoughbearinga fewvestigialhairs;neckverywide,withtheanteriorconstrictionsharplymarkedat thesides;palpishort thoughlabialpalpusis fairlyslender;mental toothbroad,trun- catedat thetip;antennaefairlystout, reachingbasalthree-eighthsofelytra,scapeas longasandabout15timesasthickassegment3,whichisslightlyshorter thanseg- ment4,pediceltheshortest,five-seventhsaslongassegment3,segments5-8gradu- allydecreasinginlengthtowardsapex,eachaboutthreetimesoralittlelessaslongas wide,segments8-10equal inlengthtooneanother, terminalsegment thelongest,a littlelongerthanscapethoughtwo-thirdsaswideasthelatter. Pronotumrelativelylarge,transversesubcordate,muchwiderthanhead,evidently wider thanlong,widestatabout two-thirdsfrombase,andmorerapidlyandstrongly narrowedtowardsapexthantowardsbase,withthebasalpartbrieflysubpedunculate; PW/HW134,PW/PL129,PW/PAca.157,PW/PB137;sidesratherwidelyre?exed beforemiddle,narrowlysoinbasalthird,stronglyroundedinfront,almoststraightly convergentbehind, andverybrie ysinuateataboutbasalsixthatthesidesofpostan- gular denticles; apex slightly arcuate forwards, front angle on each side widely NewTrechineBeetlesfromtheDabaShanMountains 269 Fig. 1. At thecollectingsiteofthetrechinebeetle, thebottomof theditchwasthinly coveredwithstagnantwaterandscatteredwithfallenleaves.Twospeciesofbembidi- ineswerefoundhereandtherefrombeneathwet fallenleaves,andthetrechinebeetle wasalsofoundfrombeneathafallenleafhalf-immersedinthewater.Itwasnotpartic- ularlyagilewhenexposedjustlikesaproxy1ophi1ousmembersofthegenus-group. Since furthersearchesdidnotyieldanymorespecimens,wewentbacktothat particularspotonthenextdayandspentmanyhoursforseekingadditionalmaterial, butalloureffortsendedinvain. Dabatrechus/lygrophilusS.UENo,sp nov (Figs4-6) Length: 4.15mm(fromapicalmarginofclypeustoapicesofelytra). Closelysimilar ingeneralappearancetoD ecce11trlcus, but different fromit in manydetails,aboveallintheshapeofpronotum.Incrediblydifferent fromDeccentr1_ cusinconformationofmalegenitalia,aswillbedescribedlater. Bodyconstrictedbetweenprothoraxandhindpart,glabrousandpolishedondor_ sum but partiallypubescentonventer;microsculpturecompletelyvanished.Colour verydarkbrown,shinyandnot iridescent,headandprothoraxalmostblack,elytra darkbrownwithreddishbasalareas;clypeusandscapereddish;palpiandlegsyellow_ ishbrown. HeadsimilartothatofDeccent1・Ious,buttheeyesarelargeranddevoidoffacets, thegenaearelessoblique,the frontal furrowsaresubangulateatmiddle,andthean_ tennaeareshorter; frontal furrowssubangulateatmiddle,andmorewidelydivergent infrontandbehind;supraorbitalareasrelativelyflat,bearingtwopairofsupraorbital poresonlinesslightlydivergentposteriad;eyeshemispherica1lyconvextogetherwith genae,butthe facetsaresodegeneratedexceptalongperipheries,thattheconvexsur_ facesofeyesaresmoothandshiny;genaeconvexattheanteriorportionsincontjnua_ tiOnoftheconvexityofeyes,rapidlyconvergentbehindtowardsneckconstrictjon,and Completely glabrous;neckconstrictiondeeper thaninD. eccentricus;mental tooth broad, roundedat thetip;antennaealittleshorter thaninD.eccentricus, reaching basalthree-tenthsofelytra.
