Abstract AnapterousaphodiinebeetlebelongingtothegcnusAphodiusisde-
scribed,Ap1/odiuskis/11,11ototsp nov., fromeasternmostSichuan,SouthwestChina,anda
newsubgenus,Guany1,lap;1odi1ls,iserectedforthisnewspecies.
ThroughthecourtesyofDr.Shun-lobiUENo,EmeritusCuratorof theNational
ScjenceMuseum(Nat.Hist),Tokyo,theauthorsweregivenanopportunityofstudy-
ingastrangeaphodiinespecies,obtainedbyDr.ToshioKIsHIMoTofromadolinein
EastSichuan.
Thisspeciesexhibitsverypeculiar facies,withsmallshortenedbodyconstricted
betweentheprothoraxandelytra.Theauthorshavecarefullyexaminedthisspecies
andconcludedthatitisnewtoscienceandfurthermore,belongstoanewsubgenus. It
willbedescribedinthepresentpaperunderthenameof /1o 1lls(Ct'a7'vlnap oef'l!s)
kishimotoi.

Bodysmall,ovate,stronglyconvexabove,constrictedbetweenforeandhindbod-

ies,almostglabrous.Headratherwide,gentlyconvexinmiddle,without tuberclesor
ridges;clypeussimpleinfrontwithstraightapex;genaefeeblyproducedlaterad; frons
andvertexnotmodified.Pronotummoderatelytransverse,stronglyconvexabove;base
bordered by sparsely puncturedgroove; basal and lateral marginsmicroscopically
crenulate;discwithoutemarginationor declivityanteriorly.Scutellummedium-sized
andtriangular.Elytrashortene strongly,deeplypunctate-striate; intervalsnoticeably
convex; humeri reduce without humeral teeth; apicesrounded.Protibiatridentate,
withterminalspurbentintero-ventradinmale;apicalbristlesofmeso-andmetatibiae
unequal inlength;tarsiratherslender;clawsratherfine.
Distribution. SouthwestChina.
Notes. ThisnewsubgenussomewhatresemblesthesubgenusApa1・ammoeciusin
generalfeatures,butcanbedistinguishedfromthelatterbythesmallerbodywithhead
rathersmooth notmodifiedbutsimplyconvex inmiddle,abruptly inclinedapica
apexstraight,genaegentlyproducedlaterad,pronotumsmooth,sparselyscatteredwith
largecoarsepunctures inthelateralparts,andelytradistinctlyshortenedandhemi-
spherical, thehumeriextremelyreducedbecauseofapterismwithouthumeral teeth,
andthediscdeeplypunctate-striate.
STEBNIcKA(1994,p 77)revivedAparammoeclusPETRovITz(1958,p.138),and
regardedParemadusNAKANE(1967,p4)asajuniorsynonymoftheformer. Inhisre-
visionof thesubgenusParemadus fromHimalaya,PITTINo (1997) mentioned new
recordsandnewspecies,andinadvertentlytreatedApa1・ammoeciusPETRovlTz,1958as
ajuniorsynonymofParemadusNAKANE,1967.Thisisevidentlyanerror andPETRo-
VITZ'snamehasapriorityOverNAKANE's.

Bodylength:2.6mm.
Ratherovate,distinctlyconstrictedbetweenforeandhindbodies,stronglyconvex
above.Apterous.Brownishblack,anteriormarginandventralsideofhead,gula,apical
andlateralmarginsofpronotumandlegsdarkreddishbrown;antennaeandmaxillary
palpipalebrown;headmoderatelyshiningandsomewhatsericeous,pronotum,scutel-
lumandelytramoderatelyandsomewhat vitreouslyshining, ventralsurfacemostly
alutaceous.
Headtransverse,gentlyandevenlyconvex,micro-shagreene without tubercles
orridges;clypeuswide, impunctate,apexalmoststraightinmiddle,roundedlaterally,
fronto-clypea1border very finelysulcate;genaegentlyproduced laterad,weaklyde-
pressedbeforeeyes,sparselyscatteredwithmicroscopicpunctures; fronswide,scat-
teredwithlargerandsmallerpunctures.Eyesmedium-sized.
Pronotumlargeandtransverse,about1.5timesaswideaslong;apexslightlypro-
ducedinmiddle,sinuous laterally,notbordered;basewidelyproduced,borderedby
sparselypuncturedgroove, very slightlysinuousnearhindangles,withbasalmargin

Scutellum medium-sized, elongatedtriangular, feeblyconvex inmiddle, almost im-
punctate.
Elytrasubovate,distinctlynarrower thanprothoraxatbases.widestatbasal t/3;
dorsumstrongly,somewhathemispherica11yconvex,highestatthemiddle,discpunc-
tate-striate, all the ten striaemarkedly deepene thepunctures rather small and
sparselyset;intervalsnoticeablyconvex,scatteredwithveryminutepunctures(visible
under 40X); base ridged, particularly in lateral portions; humeri reduced, without
humeralteeth;hindwingsabsent.
Protibiarather strongly widenedapicad, with threeouter teethanda terminal
spur,whichisbentintero-ventradinmale;apicalbristlesofmeso-andmetatibiaeun-
equal inlength; upper terminalspurofmetatibiaabouthalfthelengthof1stsegment
ofmetatarsus.

Holotype: Guan'yinDongDoline,1,600malt., Longqiao, LongqiaoXiang,

FengJieXian,E.Sichuan,18-X-2000, T.K1sHIMoToleg. (NSMT).Paralypes:8exs.,
samedataasfortheholotype.
Notes. This new speciessomewhat resemblestheapterousspecies.Aphodius
(Apa1a'mmoeclus) nishikawai MAsuMoTo, 1996, fromTaiwan, but can bediscrimi-
nated fromthelatterbythebodysmallerandshorter,withclypeusalmoststraightin
front,genaemorestronglyproducedlaterad,pronotumwiderandwithouttheanterior
bisinuousdeclivity,elytramoreovateanddeeplystriate,intervalsmorenoticeablycon-
vex,andupperterminalspurofmetatibiashorter(about2/3thelengthof1stsegment
ofmetatarsusinA nlshikawai).
Thespecimens of thetypeseriesweresiftedout frommoist humus deposited
underathicketofRubusandotherdeciduoustreesgrowingonthesteepslopenearthe
bottomofthedolineattheentrancetoGuan'yinDongCave.Thisdolineissurrounded
by cultivated field and pine stand, but maintains a moist shaded environment
favourableformesophilousbeetles.
STEBNIcKA(1994)describedanapterousspecies,Aphodiustaroke11sis, fromTai-
wan.Thoughthetypelocalitiesofthetwospecies,A tat,okensisandA.171shlkawa1,are
notremotefromeachother,thelatterisdistinguishablefromtheformerbytheprono-
tumbisinuouslydeclivousin frontandtheepipharynxandmalegenitaliadifferently
shaped. Followingher treatment,Aphodius(f)a/emadus)nlshikawa1shouldbetrans-
ferredtothesubgenusAparammoeclus.
要 約
益本仁雄・木内 信:四川省東部から発見された後 の退化したマグソコガネのl新亜属新
種. - 四川省の東端に位置する奉一'r]県 音洞で, 東京農業大学岸本年郎博士が採集された,
後翅の退化したマグソコガネ属(Ap/,odius)の甲虫を検討したところ, 新亜属・新種であること
が明らかになったので, Ap/1odius(G11anyinap/1odius)kishimotoisubgenetspnov.と命名した.
