In this spe ¢imen the wing markings as well as some other feature esxhibit exactly intermedia tceharact ebrestween the two species. Key vvords Papilienjdae, Tleinopaipus ,1lainopaipus imperiads, 7leinopaipus auretLs, northern Laos, natural hybrid. Introduction It is well known that hybridizatio onccurs arnong closely allied species. As to lepidopterous species, because there have been a number of specimens collected by many enthusiasts for hundreds of years ,many reports are known of natural or artificial hybridizatio enven for the 1arges btirdwing s(Straatm a19n7,6) and the palaearct iacpollos (Yag i& Omoto, 2oo1) ,for lnstance. Since the discover yof 7leiopaipu simperiads Hope, I843 and Z aureus (Mel l1,923) from Xam Neua, nombern Laos (Masui & Uehara, 1999, 2000), we have attempted close examina- tions of the 7leinopaip uspsecimens from the localj ttyo understand individua lvariations of the two species. To our surprise, quite incidental loyn,e of the 71?inopaip uspsecimens is an intermedi aitn eappearance between both species, which convinces us of the natural hybridiza- tion. Specimen examined, ] di i(Fig 3s-4) ,Xam Neua, northern Laos, July 4, 1999, The above-mentioned hybrid (6 i) along with the typical specimens (6n ya)l,1 from the same loca!it ayr,e shown in Figs 1-6 . The external characters ofthe hybrid compared with thetwo fo11ows. species are as ' Wing shape and size. Generall ysimilar to imperiaiZg e,specially in the acute fbrewing apex. Length of fbrewing 54 mm, which fall swithin the normal range of the two species; in the figure dspecimens, lengt hof forewing 55 mm in auretLs (Fig s1-2) and 52 mm in imperiaiZs (Fig5s-6). Wing markings. 1) Forewing upperside. Simila rto imperial is.2) Forewing underside. Ground color pale brown, with basal one-third tinged wjth black , Markings in the outer area similar to impen'al Zwyh, ile those in the basal area similar to aureus 3) Hindwing. Median yellow marking intermediat eboth in size and in shape, but somewhat similar to aureus in narrowing tewards costa. Marginal yellow lunule sdeveloped as in aureus 4) Paler area of tip of hindwing tai lpale orange and ca 3.5 mm in length ;both coloration and lengt hintermediat beetween aureus (yell oanwd ca 2.5 mm in length )and imperiaz a(sdeep orange and ca 5.0 mm in length). Discussion 1n Xam Neua northern Laos the locali wtheyre this hybrid was collected,τ 〃nperialtS and , , Zaureus are distribut esdympatrically and it was reported that they are only temporally segregated (Masui & Uehara 2000). Th,is suggests that the occurrence of natural hybridiz−a , tion is highly possibl. e The discover yof this hybrid specimen convinces us thatτ 加1μ〜吻 必 and T. aureus are very closely related species .
